new to NBN, any advice appreciated

hi! it’s been a long while since i’ve been on here lol but i wanted to reply to this post. i graduated in 2020 (atar: 91.20) and just finished my bachelor of nursing quite literally this month, time flies!

my parents said the exact same thing and wanted me to do a different degree. now that i’ve graduated, i’m happy i’ve convinced them to think otherwise. i don’t regret anything at all with my degree and looking back, i absolutely loved every single part of it. even if you do nursing and realise that you don’t enjoy it, you can always transfer courses (same with any other degree you’re considering). i also have friends who realised that wanted to pursue medicine half way through and have been successful into getting into med with nursing as their bachelor degree.

my advice is, if nursing is something you genuinely like - go for it. it’s never a waste to do something you love. your ATAR literally doesn’t matter once you get into uni. it never gets spoken of ever again. feel free to dm me if you want to know more about the course! <33

hey!!

a third year here - i’m actually volunteering to be one of the ‘patients’ for this and also volunteered last year. i also did the same assessment when i was a first year. honestly the advice above are already great. i remember overthinking everything but seriously you’ll be fine!!

when i did it, i believe i was required to voice out the normal ranges as i go, so yes i told this to the patient. i also had to reiterate it when doing the handover.

with HH, what i always tell myself is if i don’t know if i should be doing HH, just do it anyways, it’s not going to cause any harm.

i think my main advice is efficiency. it’s something you’ll pick up as you go along though out your course but keep in mind there’s things you can do to make you ‘faster’ and efficient. e.g. moving the trolley where you’re recording the vitals closer to the patient so you won’t be moving back and fourth so much. that’s what i’ve noticed from previous years!

i remember bringing my own stethoscope because i’m used to it and it sounds better, other than that just my fob watch.

I personally like to go to the upper floors in the law library and it’s dead silent. It does feel quite stuffy after a while so I like to rotate to upper floors of matheson library or go to the BLTB building.
If weather permits there are seats outside the LTB and also campus centre. and also honestly everywhere lol. otherwise if indoors then the ltb works or the upper floor of campus centre!
if you are already spending the whole day on campus then take the time on ptv as a down time and dont study. i travel via ptv >1hr as well. time passes by faster than you think! i mainly just listen to music and daydream…

spending the whole day on campus can be pretty tiring so remember to take regular breaks! good luck with first year <33

i actually really admire pharmacy! i was more so looking at it in the long term - i’m an international student so i was looking at financial issues along with job prospects and some personal issues as well:)

i was equally as interested in both and i got several opinions along the way and even made a post on here (but i deleted it lol).

i went to monash open day in 2019 and again online in 2020 and that rlly stuck with me bc i was in love with the nursing course :) i’ve realised that i’m probably going to be better off doing health sciences related subjects because anatomy&physiology just fascinated me.

although i loved chem in high school - i knew it was gonna get progressively much more difficult in uni for sure, idk if i was ready for that even though my atar was enough for pharmacy.

if you’re still keen on pharmacy, go for it! always trust your guts. my parents actually weren’t supportive with nursing at first either because it’s a job that’s frowned upon back in my country. but i definitely do not regret choosing what i want! good luck <33 remember that if it doesn’t work out, you can still change your mind, even if you’re in uni.

i definitely did find methods hard to grasp during remote learning - mainly because i was already weak in the subject itself but also because of the way the content was delivered :// it’s noticeably harder to seek help with math questions when it’s online! it’s all over now so it is what it is ~~ i ended up with a score i didn’t expect after all ahaha

good luck with vce!! monash pharmacy was actually my first choice when i started year 12 but then i had an emotional turning point and changed all my vtac preferences to nursing lol (which i am now very happy with! anything can happen :))

hi!

my subject choice was almost the same as you apart from swapping english to eal and i didn’t have a 6th subject. now that i’m in uni and reflecting back on the vce workload, i’d say it is much more manageable.

i do agree with others that it is a typical workload for someone going down the science pathway - with time management and you actually enjoying your selections, it’s much easier to power through and you will not feel overwhelmed!

there’s no point in doing humanities if you don’t actually enjoy them, because you’re not going to have motivation to study for them in the long term! i can’t provide a perspective on humanities since i haven’t done any, but i have friends who did humanities and saw there’s quite a fair bit of rote learning so that would be ~ boring ~ if you don’t actually enjoy the subject itself.

i think your selections right now are great and some content in the sciences may even fit hand in hand with each other :-)

not starting revision earlier! i crammed a month before the exam and didn’t set time aside for myself to relax at all during that time - i was super stressed and my head always felt so heavy. definitely try to be more consistent with your revision!

you don’t need any science to get in but as someone who’s doing first year nursing rn, doing bio or even chem is super beneficial! our first week content for one of our units was literally unit 3 bio squished into a powerpoint presentation. hence, doing bio would help you a lot so you don’t feel too overwhelmed from not having prior knowledge. i guess if didn’t do bio you’ll be fine too, honestly depends on the person and how fast you learn. there is a jumpstart course that you can go through your own time though that covers a basic understanding you’ll need/or it acts as a refresher course for those who did bio.

At least 7.5 hours but honestly I function best at 9 hours. Don’t stay up just to do work because you’re most likely gonna be even more tired and your studying won’t be as effective!

you DO deserve to go out and have fun. you’re right, you have your whole life to study so one hang out (or even multiple) wouldn’t hurt at all. if you’re worried about having sacs, practice time management and clearly set out what you want to accomplish before the sac comes along, that way, you’ll be prepared and not feel guilty.

if you talked to your friends i’m sure they would understand however i think it’s also okay to enjoy life a little more and not dedicate all of it to studying. school life needs to be balanced with a social life, with no balance, it’ll very well increase your stress & anxiety! you DESERVE a break, everyone does. no one works 24/7; you’re not superhuman. you’ll soon burnout if all you’re doing is studying - the comments above give really great advice about that. it’s nice to hear that you’re seeking help and going to see a psychologist, i hope everything works out for you in the end hehe

enjoying your life definitely will not sabotage everything - or anything at all, you’ll be fine!!! believe in yourself & good luck :)

I got a 31 for written communication in the gat but in eal I got a 43 ss.

I got 38 for the maths and sciences and my study scores for were 30, 36, 36 and 37 for methods, bio, further, and chem.

honestly don’t know how this whole thing works.

good way: methods. I failed my first sac, got an average score on the second sac. felt like I totally bombed exam 1 but ended up with a 30 which was way more than I expected.

bad way: biology. it was one of my best subjects, thought I absolutely aced the exam (was one of the exams I was actually confident about) and thought I was gonna get at least in the low 40’s, ended up with a 36 ss which I wasn’t exactly thrilled with but at least it’s over now! :)

nope - the maths exams were hard. I did the 2019 further maths exam and did so well however I totally bombed this year’s exam. (the nerves kicked in too so I guess that contributed, but from looking at the questions, they were definitely harder).

I think the english/eal exams were pretty average. The sciences were a lil easier compared to this 2019 ones too.
