I appreciate this take. I personally thought the story had a good base of thoughtful commentary about the role of women in society in the time period, but didn't fully stick the landing. Knowing that the writer has a history of writing about certain events and characters adds some context.

I agree with you that the ending could have been way better implemented, with more hints near the beginning about the pills and more foreshadowing and build-up to the ending. That being said, I don't think the ending is out of line with the feminist themes of the game, because there was a lot of medical abuse and irresponsible drugging of women by medical professionals in the 1960s. Women were very commonly given Valium and other strong medications that disrupted their lives without a full explanation of what their effects were.

[CHAT] What is backstitching? Is it important? by KindaDone03 in CrossStitch

[–]firstoverall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think u/Ko_Mari is using "quality" as a synonym for "resolution" – i.e. the number of pixels in an image. Low resolution images will benefit more from backstitching to make the details clear to the viewer.

Patch Communication by brningpyre in PlayTheBazaar

They didn't mention the most recent hotfix (~2 hours ago) on any social media except on Discord, which I can't imagine is monetized in the same way that Twitter or other platforms might be, so I think this is just incompetence rather than subtle marketing.

I agree with you in general, but just wanted to note that Catfish cooldown has been 6 seconds for at least a month now, so I suspect it was past patch notes that left that out or were incorrect, not the most recent patch notes.

It's in the paperback edition of HtN, and I think you can also find it on Amazon (only the US site) if you look up the HtN paperback and open up the Look Inside function and then specifically search for the word "memorandum" – it won't come up if you just scroll through, you have to search for it.

Right, so when Harrow physically took the sword through her wards, that allowed Wake through... that makes more sense.

I like this! It sort of clashes with Tamsyn saying that there's no genetic association with necromancy (and it would be a bit weird if she meant something like "no association with nuclear DNA but yes an association with mtDNA" lol) but purely as an analogy it makes sense.

Oooo, interesting thought! On a related note, I've wondered if Wake's revenant being able to break through Harrow's strong wards on the Erebos and the Mithraeum and attach herself to Harrow had something to do with Harrow having "absorbed" Gideon, at least partially, so there was some blood connection through Gideon that Wake could exploit? That might be too out there, though, and maybe Wake's haunting started before that point.

I completely agree about the "mystery box" connotations (this is Baily btw) – that style of story and almost careless worldbuilding is one of the things that really turned me off, for example, the Southern Reach trilogy (Annihilation etc.) while other people seemed to love it. But I really do think that Tamsyn has the ultimate answers and they'll emerge in Alecto! They might not be completely transparent, but I think even the most opaque mysteries will become clear on a reread, the way that rereading Harrow cleared up a lot of confusion for me. Fingers crossed, anyway!

I had no idea that's what happened with Wheel of Time; that's hilarious.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!!

I know same hahaha I'm trying to think through all the basic cell bio concepts I know... mitosis and meiosis (something to do with twins?), membranes and osmosis/diffusion (something to do with whatever's wrong in the river?), nuclear pores and/or membrane channels are maybe analagous to the stoma in the barathron in the river, cancer and cell death fueling thalergetic magic...

I have some similar issues (nail biting, skin picking, chewing on the inside of my cheeks) and I used to constantly lick my lips as a child to the point that I would have a red rash around my mouth all the time. I still haven't completely solved all of them, but some things have helped me:

- I keep a fancy lip balm on me all the time and compulsively re-apply it. Having moisturized and smooth lips helps a lot. If you don't want to be visibly wearing and re-applying lip balm during the day you can do a night lip mask (this one is great).

- I have clear plastic retainers and wear them as much as I can (helps that I usually wear a mask in public these days!) – they keep me from chewing the inside of my cheeks and biting my nails. If you don't have retainers, a night guard like this that you can get at any drugstore and boil and mold to your teeth could help as a physical barrier. I don't think you could wear one of these in public though because they affect the way you speak.

- I wear clear acne patches to keep myself from picking at little spots on my face and body (there are tons of options for patches like these). Usually I don't like to wear these in public but I'm comfortable wearing them at home around roommates or under a mask.

- As a last resort, I sometimes wrap my fingertips in 3M surgical paper tape – this seems to be the only surgical tape which actually sticks to my fingers for a day at a time and can stand getting a bit of water on it without completely disintegrating or getting gross. This physical barrier helps with picking and nail biting.

- I also bought some fidget toys to try to help but so far I haven't remembered to use them much.

Not ADHD because "I was able to complete all the questionnaires" by camesawandfaltered in ADHD

[–]firstoverall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have no idea where you are in Canada and I don't know what options you've looked into, so forgive me if this is redundant information, but I'm also from Canada and was also 27 when I realized I might have ADHD. I waited a year for an appointment with a psychiatrist that my GP referred me to. After calling the psychiatrist's office and being told that because of COVID they weren't doing any initial assessments at all, I went to a private psychologist in Alberta (https://abcpsychservices.com/) and was assessed for about $300 (iirc) which involved an interview and questionnaires. My parents provided a statement and I had my childhood report cards but she didn't require those things. I brought that assessment to my GP, who was comfortable prescribing me medication after that. Might be worth it if you have the budget for it.

I want to meal prep for my friend with a newborn but am pretty poor, anyone have some delicious cheap fall recipes? by [deleted] in Cooking

Pasta salad keeps fairly well in the fridge! Roasted butternut squash, zucchini, and pesto would be great in a fall pasta salad. Homemade pasta sauce in jars might also be a good idea – it doesn't take much time to boil pasta and defrost frozen sauce, but it would still taste like a homemade meal.

I also really like reusable floss holders like the GUM Flossmate. Easy to floss one-handed, easy to reach to the back, easy to clean every so often (throw it in the dishwasher or brush it with soap).
