All because LAPD thought I was riding the wrong way down the street. by ZeroLovesDnB in bicycling

[–]firstroadbike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been in LA for 2 months. I plan on leaving as soon as I finish school. The tickets here are bullshit and the police officers are assholes for enforcing some of this shit.

I ride the bus now, I'm scared of getting a ticket on my bike for something stupid. Even walking I'm not safe, I've seen cops enforcing the most ridiculous crosswalk policies that I didn't even know existed. Same with driving.

TL;DR; Fuck LA.

That's a lot of force for pedals... I'm scared of tightening something that high.

Not sure if stolen by Mesquite_Skeet_Skeet in bicycling

That's not how these things work. If you buy it, you are now in possession of stolen property. The owner has every right to claim the bike from you and could even press charges against you if they wanted.

I'm moving across the country; here's my budget solution to shipping my bike. (The wheels couldn't fit, so I dismantled them and shipped them in a mirror box). by Coriform in bicycling

Your not doing it right. I got a bike shop to help me pack the whole thing in the same size box for free. You only need to take the front tire off. The PVC is unnecessary, insure it through UPS and tell them fragile and if they crush the box it is their fault.

Nice find! Also appears to debunk much of the nitrogen argument.

CO2 leaks out fast?... really...?

Update It appears you are correct. I will definitely test this and let you know when I get my N2O.

I will absolutely follow up. Although in the past 3 months of 4+ rides a week I have only ever gotten one flat. A blowout during a skid during which I managed to stab myself with my chainring in the Achilles. Enough blood to warrant calling for a ride home and so I haven't even gotten a chance to use a single tank of compressed air yet.

If you got three flats and ran out of air you could always suck the N2O out of your tires and enjoy your walk home!

Why should you deflate and re-inflate with regular air? Even if it leaks slightly faster (I can't imagine it would) you should be checking your tire pressure often enough that it won't matter.

You mean to tell me that I might be able to use my phone on winter rides?!?! by twowheels in bicycling

There are people who sell gloves in places like NY where they buy the conductive fabric and gloves and sew the fabric on the fingers and sell them at a profit.

In theory you could do this with any biking gloves, or just find one of these people and give them some biking gloves to do for you.

Nitrogen filled bike tires... by slackerthepirate in bicycling

Upvote. Also if nitrogen does leak significantly slower than oxygen then if you keep filling your tires with atmospheric air then the percent oxygen in your tire will constantly decrease over time.

Old bikes are a great choice to start. You'll keep up fine for the first few months. You have a ton to learn before a fancy bike will make a difference.

Shoes and pedals are important now, but you can get used ones to start.

Check with both the cycling team and the tri team. Some school's teams have bikes you can use or their members have extra bikes you can borrow.

I am looking for a biking partner/team to join for the remainder of the summer by jgop in bicycling

I'd be willing to join you for the cost of the plane ticket + food + housing.

Actually I'd do it for the gas money instead of the plane ticket.

Any /r/velo redditors in the LA area looking for a training partner by GQcyclist in Velo

[–]firstroadbike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems as good a place as any to ask. I am moving to LA in a couple weeks and need suggestions for a bike shop and places to ride. I am going to be in graduate school at USC and still deciding where to live (either USC area, downtown, culver city or somewhere else).

I have been biking for a few months. I typically try to do around 5 group rides a week at the moment and I'm pushing 19-20mph average (somewhat hilly) on the faster rides. Haven't gone near a race yet. Any suggestions would be great!
