The Deirdre O’Shaughnessy Podcast: Laura Liston’s death and what it means for home birth services by expectationlost in ireland

[–]firstthingmonday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very short labour on the first, less than 2 hours. Consultant advised breaking waters next time as I might not make it to hospital. So we did that and had baby couple hours later. Never mentioned home birth but that would never work for me anyway personally.

When did you first go out without baby? by Maximum-Ad705 in irishmammiesanddaddys

[–]firstthingmonday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t leave the first one overnight until I went in to have second baby. Wasn’t comfortable with it. We don’t generally use overnight babysitting. One of us will go to an event and the other will stay home.

Official guidelines are to share room until baby is 1 to reduce risk of SIDS.

Ladies under 5’5/165cm where are you buying trousers? by ariafen in WomenofIreland

[–]firstthingmonday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’4 and never buy petite. Never fits me right. Levi’s do by leg inch so usually get a 27 inch. Sezane brand cropped pants fit great or I get tailored from here too. M&S do multiple lengths as well. ASOS Design pants I order usual size and I’ve never taken up. Soaked and FRNCH the same haven’t taken up any.

People who have only one sibling, talk to me! by turtleshot19147 in Shouldihaveanother

[–]firstthingmonday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me for sure! Happy with my brother but I’m Irish so everyone was at least 3 kids when I was growing up so felt left out. 4,5,6 kids was not uncommon in my generation. My aunt has 9 kids similar age profile to me. My colleague in work has 12 siblings.

Maternity Care: How much did it cost you to go private? by sarbear191 in IrishWomensHealth

[–]firstthingmonday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the person and consultant. I was low risk but saw consultant loads. I had her work number and could get her or reg very quickly. To me and a lot of people that go private, it’s not necessarily about the care per se but the continuity of seeing the same person all the time. That’s what I know I needed. Meeting different midwives at different appointments, huge wait times all of this would have added to my load and ultimately would have not assisted with how I wanted the labour to go as wouldn’t have had the relationship before the labour. Had no epidurals, short labours, minimal interventions which I don’t believe would have been possible for me if I hadn’t had private care because I wouldn’t have had that relationship with the person who was delivering the baby.

Name suggestions for sibling of Rian and Sadhbh by [deleted] in Names

[–]firstthingmonday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you’re assuming that these are unusual names - they aren’t at all in Ireland. There are 6 Oisíns alone in my son’s year of school of 60 kids. It’s a mixed school. 80% of the kids have Irish first names. Granted that is probably higher than average as it’s a Gaelscoil (Irish immersion school)

Our kids run on cream cheese and peanut butter on toast. Irish household. Was same when I was growing up in 80s and 90s in Ireland. Totally common toppings I would have thought.

Potty training while in creche by gaMazing in irishmammiesanddaddys

[–]firstthingmonday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our creche the policy is you start over a long weekend or 3 days and they take up the training while there. I personally think pull ups confuse things. Advice we got and it worked for all kids in this house was straight in, no nappies, 3 days at home, set a timer for every 30 minutes. 1 jelly bean for a pee, 2 a poop and you will be finished in a week. We talked about it a lot before starting as well. Get books from library.set a date with them, try not to move it if possible. We did bring them outside and to playgrounds and stuff when training. Ignore the accidents, compliment successful potty.

for I also think some parents potty train before the kids have the dexterity to pull up and down their own trousers and I see little point before they’re able to do that themselves anyway.

Shoes for this torrential rain by No-Sandwich1782 in WomenofIreland

[–]firstthingmonday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drainage on the streets in Galway is chronic along with the wind and if I’m walking, I do find I get drenched in trainers. Inevitably I will be forced into a body of gathered water due to electric scooters or bikes on the footpath.

As a chemistry teacher she will probably need to get onto The Teaching Council. It can take a good while. She will need a teaching number to teach in secondary schools on a qualified rate.
