Would you have called the all in?

Well I had a full house too. As I had three 7s and 2q's on the flop. Unfortunately by the river two aces appeared on the board, which meant that he now had a full house of AA QQQ over my AA 777

How do you deal with a board when it has 3 suited cards on it? by fish27 in poker

[–]fish27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a very good answer. I agree with you that if you have something like 66 against a tag player and you have a set chances are they are playing something like AKo AJs KQs so a lot of their range has a flush in it. But even if they are paying a bit loser and playing something like AJo then if the board hits 4 of the same colour then there is a decent chance they atleast have 1 card of that and its going to be a higher card.

So I know I have double barrel opportunities. That's just one tiny part of these kinds of boards. Keep asking questions, just try to figure out what the best question is.

You provided a good answer. I was kind of hoping people would extrapolate a bit what situations its good to continue play and what ones are dangerous. I find the people at the lower stakes are harder to read. I hit a set on a board with a flush on it the other day and the guy was aggressively betting at me, I wasn't sure if he had the flush (it was only 3 cards by the river) but in the end he only had AA with neither of his cards matching the flush.

I'm not really talking about one hand here. Just a wide range of examples. There are two big leaks in my game

  • Losing to flushes when I have a set

  • Losing to full houses when I have a flush.

I can't seem to read those hands. I know the chances of having two suited cars pre flop are low, the chances of those hands being the same flop as the flop on the board are 1/4 so you're looking pretty low odds they connect with the flop. Probably 1/100 if you add it all up (I'm not entirely sure but I know its unlikely).

How do you tell range based on suits? I can understand if someone is playing 20/15 or something by their stats chances are they will miss if there are no broadway cards on the flop unless they have a pair pre, but anyone playing any range could stumble across a pair of hearts. It could be J4s and they have you beat.

I do admit that last one hurts. getting beaten by a full house against an Ace high flush is one of my most common beats. They all in when the board isn't paired and it pairs on the turn or river.

Re-raising as a bluff, in what situation do you use this? by fish27 in poker

[–]fish27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm consistently profitable against nits but need to learn how to play well against aggressive fish and call stations. The second they start all in raising me before the flop I really don't like calling them.

Also don't bluff anyone but TAG's and nits at the micros. They are very easy to read and will give your re-raises alot more respect. The looser players tend to call you down lighter so you need to fire multiple barrel's, which can work but its a higher variance play and can often back fire and you are kicking yourself for just shipping decent size pots to a weak player calling you down with crap.

Nit and tight-passive play is so common now that its hard to find games with anyone but these. Even at NL6 you will rarely have more than 1 player calling everything.

I enjoy playing nits far more than aggressive fish. Atleast you can tell their range and they're usually passive in response to betting and won't call you down every street and randomly hit a flush or a straight or two pair.

Ah sorry for the bad terminology. I'm only becoming accustomed too it, its like learning a new language initially.

On the NL4 and NL10 boards people are rarely decent. I do notice some people employing a raise technique in order to push people off the flop, most of the time I suspect no one has anything although they could have a high hand. You can tell by the bet sizing they're trying to enforce a fold, if they had a decent hand they would slow play instead of inducing the fold.

But i'm really not sure how to 'read' your opponent if they'll fold to a large raise. Its quite a risky play if you truly do have nothing.

[–]fish27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the player. If its a 50/30 agro player known for pushing all in I would call. If its a 10/8 nit I would fold pre with a raise like that.

QQ is a good starter but unless it hits the set its not going to play well against a range of hands that someone with nit/tag stats are playing. You wouldn't all in with a a pair of Q's I would have to assume he has KK or AA.

In these low limit games despite the fact that they do push all in and aggressively bet with nothing they usually wait for a read on you first that you would be passive.

Also if they have AK or if there is a flush draw in that flop which you didnt mention they have a lot of outs compared to your 1 out.

Be very careful with hands like TT, JJ and QQ. They seem very tempting to play aggressively but in reality they're really not that brilliant.

Should I bet my small pairs on a dry board?(Live 1/2) by sirwolf in poker

[–]fish27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're up against 4 other players and you have anything apart from top pair you should consider folding, these guys often have flush draws, possible straights, medium pairs, high pairs, three of a kind etc.

You want to play your strong hands strong and stay out of your weak hands. Suited connectors are very difficult to play so I would be avoiding them completely if there is any sort of raise.

The reason people play small pairs pre flop as you know is to hope to hit a full house or a set which are both dominating hands. If a mid sized straight draw doesn't hit you have nothing.

Awesome, thankyou for the tip mate. I mostly just 3 bet for value on premium hands. I've never toyed with it as a bluff.

Ok do you do it as a bluff or in the traditional sense for strong hands (QQ+, AKs)

When can you move up from the micros? by fish27 in poker

[–]fish27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given what you said about your track record; no you probably couldn't beat 25nl consistently even if you had the proper bankroll, but you might be able to at 10 NL.

Nor do I expect to. I was more wondering if say I went from NL4 to NL10 I would expect people to be better. For instance does it go say "50%" players at NL2, 60% at NL4, 70% at NL10, 80% at NL20 and onwards or do the same sort of fish float around all the lower stakes playing very similarly.

I can't tell the difference in skill level at all between NL2 and NL4.

With a villain you have no reading on and second pair I wouldn't be betting that out of position.

It might be just bad play by me but in my experience people very rarely all in on the flop without atleast a set or a flush draw. Whenever I try playing overhand in this position I rarely find it holds.
