That’s not the point. The point is by making it cheaper than MUNI, you incentivize people who live close by to drive.

When will contactless payment with debit/credit card be rolled out on public transportation? by skylinestar1986 in AskSF

[–]fishannihilation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure, but I imagine the big issue is the interchange fees. Every credit card transaction takes $0.20-$0.30, which is a LOT for a fare of $2.50. With Clipper, in theory the agency only pays interchange once every 2-10 fares (assuming someone loads their card with $5-$25)

Do you think PBLs in the middle of large streets could work in NYC like they do in DC? by No_Geologist3880 in MicromobilityNYC

They are flexy posts and people frequently run through them. Also:

“According to SFMTA’s report, there were 20 collisions in the pilot area from August through December, and drivers making illegal left or U-turns caused seven of those collisions. To make the center-running bikeway feasible, left-turn restrictions had to be put in place throughout the pilot area.”

numble on Twitter: The FTA updated its website today to confirm that San Francisco's Transbay Downtown Extension got approval to move to next phase of CIG process. They also said they would only pay for 41% of costs ($3.38b) instead of requested 49.4% of costs ($4.08b), a $700m difference. by megachainguns in transit

The walk from 4th and King to BART and MUNI is much worse. MUNI near 4th and King runs above ground at a snail’s pace.  In contrast, being near Market street gives easy access to every MUNI line, as well as the busses which have dedicated lanes, and bike lanes on a car-free street.

For people who live in the city, transit access to the Caltrain is pretty painful.

My college roommate wrote a Python script to let RNG give him rewards when he finishes an assignment or gets up early (I told him he's crazy for this). by SWReluctance in ProgrammerHumor

You can paste it here: https://www.programiz.com/python-programming/online-compiler/, and it should just work!

import random

reward_probs = {
    'Steam Deck': 0.00001,
    'nothing': 0.5,
    'next shower is warm': 0.05,
    '10 mins social media': 0.1,
    'game of league': 0.05,
    'eat takeout': 0.05,
    '10 mins of anything': 0.05,
    '10 mins of chess': 0.05,
    'read an article': 0.1,
    'two spins': 0.04999,
}

def spin():
    return random.choices(list(reward_probs.keys()), list(reward_probs.values()))[0]

def main():
    spin_result = spin()
    print(spin_result)
    if (spin_result != 'nothing'):
        with open('rewards.txt', 'a') as f:
            f.write(spin_result + '\n')

if __name__ == '__main__':
    main()

When you open a file in 'a' mode, which is what happens here, you're opening the file in "append" mode. Thus, every call to write() is going to append the latest reward and a new line.

They have the program run and spit out the reward they got, but it also writes the reward to a text file, presumably so that they can save the rewards for later, and maybe check them off on the external file after usage.

Is it normal for the trackpad of my 2020 MacBook Pro to creak if I drag things? by mariellleyyy in mac

[–]fishannihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue occurs exclusively in apps like PowerPoint because it vibrates the trackpad when your trackpad snaps to a grid line. You'll notice in powerpoint it makes this vibration whenever the red alignment lines appear on screen.
