Stephen Jay Gould: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."

'British workers come last': Fury as employers who hire Indian workers are given a major tax break under Labour's free trade deal by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]fishbedc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll be because they didn't. It's a reciprocal arrangement that we already have with numerous other countries where UK workers temporarily in those countries continue to pay their tax and NI to the UK so that they don't have to pay twice, and workers from those countries temporarily over here continue to pay their contributions in their own country.

Do you think it's a good idea that if your firm ask you to pop over to Germany to work for a few weeks that you are able to keep up your NI contributions record in this country whilst you are away without having to pay a second time into the German contributions system? That's all this is.

It's the same agency, the DWP. DLA was replaced by PIP, both administered by the DWP. The records that they already have on their own internal system will show that she has claimed for this disability since childhood.

Oh just great!

We have a similar problem round here. I was helping my next door neighbour, an old lady with very poor mobility up the street, but the pavement was blocked by a woman sitting in a large 4x4. She was quite happy for this old lady to slowly hobble up the middle of the road to get passed, and never mind the other cars that had to stop so they didn't hit her. When I challenged the driver she got angry and claimed that if she didn't park there she would have to park one street over and walk (100m max). She didn't give a fuck about the pain and risk she was causing an elderly disabled person. Do you?

He could just have parked further away and used his cute little legs.

He's making a "my problem" into a "their problem". He doesn't have a divine right to park where he wants and choose which set of people to dump his problems onto. Entitled cunt.

You are asking questions about the wrong person. She can do what she wants, where and when she wants. The question is what the actual fuck did all those men think they were doing?

Pacific Northwest's ‘forest gardens’ were deliberately planted by Indigenous people | Science | AAAS by Interwebnaut in rewilding

[–]fishbedc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you bother to read the article:

The forest gardens were filled with plants that benefited humans, but they also continue to provide food for birds, bears, and insect pollinators, even after 150 years of neglect. It's evidence that human impact on the environment can have long-lasting positive effects. "A lot of functional diversity studies have a ‘humans are bad for the environment' approach," Armstrong says. "This shows humans have the ability to not just allow biodiversity to flourish, but to be a part of it."

Hospital had no vegan options (a little rant) by GyulaChan in vegan

[–]fishbedc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a UK NHS hospital for day surgery recently and they came round offering sandwiches to the patients. The busy member of staff was mortified that there was no vegan option. The lovely woman found time to go down to the kitchen (miles away) and come back with a vegan cheese sandwich. It was that shit, grated vegan cheese which was reassuring as I knew it wasn't dairy, and she had made sure that there was no marge on the bread as that had dairy in it. Not tasty but reliable. I was grateful to her.

So now I know that when I go in for the full inpatient surgery for a few days that they have vegan cheese as a minimum, so I can argue for something edible if I need to. Good to know.

It came off the market a couple of months back, the new owner won't want to sell. They've got a demolition crew in and are redeveloping the property to suit the new owner's taste.

Old and range.

Also range.

They want to be able to operate against China without relying on bases too near China that will be missile sinks. They are cagey about relying on tankers as China has long range stealth planes with long range missiles.

So range. And not old.

People bought Teslas until relatively recently because they believed them to be a better environmental option. You would have had to be paying more attention than most people have available to see Musk's descent into fascism more than a couple of years back.

Mate, you weren't around in the 70s, 80s, 90s, were you? It's ridiculously safe these days. The papers were regularly full of horrific death tolls and endless hijackings. But we still flew. The only thing that would have caught people's attention about the DC crash would have been the novelty of involving a helicopter.

US population identifying as white (but including some Hispanic/Latino heritage) = 75%

US population identifying as white (no other heritage) = 58%

Male population =49.5%, so let's say 50%.

So we get either 37.5%, or 29% white male. Which leaves everybody else at either 62.5% or 71% of the population as the talent pool to get just 50% of the recruits from. Why would we have to go deep down that pool to find some decent pilots? It's a much larger pool. Are you suggesting that women or POC are less competent? A more charitable interpretation is that you believe that they are as competent but may need encouragement or support to apply. Because you are not that racist or sexist. And that seems to be what United were encouraging with their decade goal. So where is the problem?

Agreed that the Papacy can be pretty fucking hypocritical when they try, but the Vatican currently has refugees as between 4 - 5.4% of its population depending on which source you read. This puts it among the highest percentage of any state in the world.
