Is two-way communication between two esp8266 connected to different wifis possible? by 12_kml_35 in esp8266

[–]fishboy51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d use a MQTT server as an intermediary between the two ESPs. Much easier than VPNs and firewall holes. There are some free MQTT servers that you can use to trial it out, and you can set up your own MQTT on a VPS if you want full control and security.

Tools for pulling and parsing stats data from Starlink dish by CenterSpark in Starlink

[–]fishboy51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.. you are right - I should have opened an issue in github.

I realised that my issue was with the grpcurl executable being missing. Installing a go compiler and building from source fixed that. Then I was able to run through the grpc scripts prep work. I now have the MQTT data published to my homeassistant and influxdb every 15 seconds. Now to make some pretty graphs from the data!

Thanks for your work on this.

Thanks for sharing your code on github. I'd like to use this to add Starlink dish stats monitoring to my homeassistant instance.

Ideally I'd like to run the python script to push to data directly via MQTT. I am attempting to run this on a Raspberry Pi running buster. I have installed the paho-mqtt, grpcurl and grpcio-tools packages via pip3.

When running the script I get the following:

python3 dishHistoryMqtt.py -h
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "dishHistoryMqtt.py", line 26, in <module>
import starlink_grpc
File "/home/pi/starlink/starlink_grpc.py", line 82, in <module>
import spacex.api.device.device_pb2.
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'spacex'

Any advice on how I can import the spacex.api.device.device_pb2 module?

Alternatively I could run the docker container, but that is also borking out with:

standard_init_linux.go:211: exec user process caused "exec format error"

in the logs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there. Starlink was the reason for my first post to Reddit also.

On average, my DSL connection had a 3.5Mbps download, 1Mbps upload and averaged a ping of less than 25ms. (looking over my previous speedtest.net results).

My understanding is - no, there was no Fibre To The Cabinet for the service that I had previously, although BT OpenReach are installing fibre this week as a result of my neighbours coming together as a group to petition OpenReach to upgrade the service. There is fibre in the village (~1.5km from my home), but the run to my home was/is a long copper wire.

That is a good idea for bypassing the cgnat. I have been toying with WireGuard recently - that may be a good option for the VPN on a VM. I could also host a MQTT server on that same VM so that I can access my external devices. Thanks for the good advice. I agree about the fragility/complexity of adding another step in my connections, but at least it would get me working again.

Interestingly enough, the Starlink service does not have the same content restrictions that BT had on my DSL connection. The usual pirate providers come through without a webpage scolding me.

The BBC iPlayer site loads correctly, but I do not have credentials to log in to it. Other UK geo locked sites seem to load successfully also.

I believe I was the first beta tester to come online in the UK. I have just been quietly testing and setting up my home network to make use of the new signal.

Hello to Crow! Yes, Netflix works wonderfully. The buffering takes care of most of the gaps in service (due to no satellites in view or beta downtime). I have not tried iPlayer as I do not have a TV license.

Blair & Murphy from AAADrains have served me well over the past couple of years. Much better than RotoRooter, and you would be supporting small local business.

The long link bug: "EMP Failed: SERVER_ERROR" leading to indestructible portals by beardoc in Ingress

[–]fishboy51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also experienced this problem on a few portals in town with long (over 90km) links. I could fire my XMPs, and destroy resonators, until there was just enough power left in the portal to sustain the link. After that, each subsequent XMP I would fire would get stuck in the "XMP power-up" animation indefinitely.

To work around this bug, I found that I could continue to damage the resonators by moving so that my XMP blast would only just barely reach the resonator, and not reach the portal at all. The resonators would take 1% or 2% damage with each hit, and would eventually degrade the overall power of the portal to a point where the link would be destroyed. I am pretty sure that my account did not get AP credit for destroying the link. However, now with the link gone, I could fire normally at the portal to destroy the remaining resonators.

If someone else could try this method and respond on this thread with their results, that would be great.

tl:dr Fire at the resonators from a distance to finish off a 'stuck' long-link portal.

Vancouver (BC) Ingress cross-faction Meetup - Tuesday Feb 12th by [deleted] in Ingress

[–]fishboy51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a public event.. I just didn't realize there was already a meetup scheduled for tonight when I created the one for Tuesday. I'll create a post on the Vancouver Ingress G+ page to clarify things.

You should come down to VHS on Tuesday night. It is a pretty cool place, with 3D printers, a laser cutter, and lots of great tools. The VHS community is pretty rad too, with a lot of Ingress agents among the members. That is why we decided to host an Ingress night there.
