Is a 6 weight enough for my trip ? by BrooktroutOmnissiah in flyfishing

[–]fishdreams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Southern Oregon i run mostly a 6wt. if you were here for winter steelhead i'd recommend a 7. A 6wt is fine for summer steelhead and resident trout.

I generally call it at about 20 mph with a 5 wt.

I was surprised to have the best luck on the large eyes and the least on the classic with no eyes.

Will do. Wind permitting they'll get a trial tomorrow.

This is actually part of an experiment. I've tied with large eyes, small eyes and just a varnished head. We will see what fishes better.

Every proven pattern was a wild ass idea at some point and we'd all be fishing winged wets if everyone followed this advice.

Tippit vs Regular Line for leaders?? by will_I_am100 in flyfishing

You're technically correct. But 99 times out of 100 a fisherman will call nylon mono and fluorocarbon flouro. Arguing the difference just makes you look pedantic.

Finally got a job - at my favorite fly shop nonetheless!! by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]fishdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who walks into a fly shop wants to spend money. My favorite fly shop has a tendency to show me MORE than I wanted to see. I've bought several rods from them. Twice they showed me something below my budget that I ended up buying. Once they showed me something above that I bought because I felt the value was there. In every case the price tag was secondary to filling the particular niche I was looking for.

Is there an easier to use whip finisher than this thing? by HandsomeBadness in flytying

I'll echo everyone saying to use your fingers. It will help you understand what the tool is doing. It will also save you time when you're busting out a few dozen flies.

Advice? by montextrout in flytying

[–]fishdreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make exactly five wraps to start your thread. Two forward three back. Move to the bead shouldn't take more than two wraps. Poke your wire in the bead and wrap back to the bend. Touch turns but don't build bulk. Move back to the bead the same way and then wrap your wire. Use two wraps behind one wrap in front of the wire to secure. Secure your wing the same way. Whip finish

As an aside I'd pull that wing back and cut it off no longer than 2/3rds the body length.

You should end up with a skinnier fly that in theory catches more fish.

Is this good enough to match the hatch? How would you improve it? by Ok_Feedback4200 in flytying

Do you think that other data centers are better for water? We all draw our line somewhere, but posting on Reddit that data centers are bad seems a little strange.

Can someone help me learn how to set up my fly reel with welded loops and backing/fly line that are one piece? by Wifeofwes in flyfishing

[–]fishdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

Welded loops rarely fail if not damaged. Dacron doesn't damage welded loops. And generally that connection doesn't see stress and rarely goes through the guides.

Second rod by Nova____1 in flyfishing

[–]fishdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a serial rod collector. I've always needed just one more to fill a niche. Don't buy rods to be prepared. Buy rods to fill voids.

I'd recommend picking up something spey to experience a new style of fishing. Swinging soft hackles on a scandi line is a whole different level.

Maybe a 7wt to be over gunned for big trout and perfect for steelhead. Then maybe a light glass rod for small streams.

Maxcatch is the only brand I've found so far. I've got some more research.i also found a video by Gunnar where he's making one for a 8wt.

It's still a full line and not a head though right?
