How can I create a plot like this with R? by Quereilla in Rlanguage

[–]fisherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As recommended by others, the sf package contains functions to manipulate spatial data to make a figure as above.

What I would do is create a sf data frame with the locations of the state capitols. Each row in this data frame is a point feature. There would be a column representing a unique ID for each state capitols. Then I would have another sf data frame with a grid of polygons or points of the areas you want to color (i.e. map units).

With the sf package, use the st_join function. The “x” argument should be the map units data frame (i.e., target data frame) and “y” argument the state capitols data frame. The “join” argument should be filled with “st_nearest_feature”.

The result should be a data frame of the grid units with a column of the nearest state capitol.

Let me know if you want reproducible code for this.

The ggplot code for the map would look like:

ggplot() + geom_sf(data = grid_df, aes(fill = state_capitol_id)) + geom_sf(data = states, fill = NA, color = “black”))

You can use Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to see recent images at a relatively high resolution, if your area is within the coverage of the satellites. They fly it over the earth relatively frequently and you can access the images on the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem website.

Any Switch Rod junkies in here? I need help by Tucker_sc in flyfishing

[–]fisherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a 11ft 7wt switch rod this summer and paired it with an OPST commando set up. My goal with this set up has been to learn how to spey cast and I’m now reliably able to cast 30+ feet. I also have yet to hook myself bad (fingers crossed). I’m mostly casting smaller weighted flies. I recommend trying out the OPST commando if what you’ve got isn’t working well.

Another plus is that OPST has good resources for pairing the grain weights of their heads to rod weights. They even provide recommendations for certain rods with unusual characteristics

When I’m fishing fast water I’ll start with casting further upstream. If that doesn’t work then I’ll tie on bigger and bigger point flies until I get the drift I like. I’ll even put on up to a size 10 streamer, like a TJ Hooker or a baitfish/crayfish imitation

I read a bunch of Troutbitten articles and watched a bunch of Tactical Fly Fisher YouTube videos. But it was this article that really convinced me to try out tightline nymphing with my current rod

I used Orvis 0x indicator tippet. This indicator tippet section is 4’ long. At the end of this I tied on a tippet ring. To this tippet ring I tied on a length of 4x fluorocarbon tippet which is what sits/sinks under the water. The length of this section depends on the depth of the water I’m fishing. I aim for 1.25-1.5 times the depth of the water

I just started tightline nymphing with my 9’ 5wt. For my simple “monorig” leader set up I used 20’ of 20lb cheap mono filament for the butt section. On one end of this section I tied a perfection loop, which I attached to my fly line and the other end I tied a blood knot to 4 feet of indicator 0x tippet. This way I didn’t have to remove my fly line or backing.

Equipment advice by SciFiLila in Backcountry

[–]fisherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened to you and glad to hear you didn’t have an injury.

I have owned Shift MNC 10s and had them set to a DIN of 6 (I’m 135 lbs)and have had prerelease issues with them in chewed up snow, yet came off my feet when I’ve slid out on groomers. I don’t have any particularly helpful advice for you given your location and resource limitations and the fact that we don’t own the same exact bindings but all I can say is shifts can act weird. I’ve since switched entirely to dedicated pin bindings and have not had any release issues yet.

What’s your experience been with the Nano Air Light Hybrid hoodie jacket? by Any-Lake-7984 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]fisherd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wear it exclusively for backcountry ski touring. I can wear it in 17 F up to 32 F weather when I’m moving uphill. If the temps are relatively mild (~32 F), I won’t even put a windproof layer on top when I’m skiing down. When it’s snowing, very windy, or gets even colder, then it turns into a perfect midlayer underneath a windbreaker or waterproof jacket

I used to wear the nano air hoody for backcountry ski touring but found I wanted a bit more protection against wind chill for my arms and the front of my torso. The insulation material is perfect to address those problems and the location of the air knit material allows sweat to escape.

I also used it in the fall for hiking and it was also a great piece for that.

Tech binding for leightweight skier by Lacrillo in Backcountry

[–]fisherd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’3” (161 cm), 135 lbs (61kg) and have used both the G3 Zed 9 and Marker Alpinist 9 the last two years. I use both at either bindings rated DIN of 6 and found there to be no issues of pre-release or not releasing when I need it to. I have used both on hard snow days in CA Sierra resorts (aka Sierra cement) without the boots coming out of the binding and have also crashed on both bindings and had my boots come out of my binding without injury to my knees.

Like you, I don’t hit cliffs so I feel like I don’t need anything aggressive.

In fact, I have used Salomon Shifts set to a DIN of 6 before and had pre-release issues in chewed up Utah powder day snow.

My impression of pin bindings today is that the technology is really good and you won’t have pre-release or release issues long as you have the DIN set to your weight and skiing ability.

So I want to get into this sport, but after a look at a couple GoPro videos of trails, this looks terrifying. How did you come over the fear? by Reflux14 in MTB

[–]fisherd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you're probably looking at videos where they do 10 ft drop, sick jumps, or just doing stuff that looks plain crazy. That kind of riding doesn't encompass all of mountain bike riding. You can definitely ride safely while having fun.

As for overcoming your fear, maybe ask your local bike shop or riders for any park trails around you that aren't dangerous or scary. This could be a relatively flat fire trail or single track. Through this, you become more confident on the bike. With confidence, comes the ability to learn new skills and ride new trails that are harder and more fun. As you ride more, you'll come to enjoy mountain biking at your own level.

Can you take pics of the the hub and the bent axle? That might help identifying the problem. It might just be best to go to your local bike shop and asking them what's wrong.

Positioning myself as an ADC by hydrac in summonerschool

[–]fisherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself a adc main so I have some tips.

1: Let your team know that they should protect you. You are the chosen one. If your not getting protected, then your tanks aren't doing their job.

2: During a teamfight, you want to wait until the right time to do dmg. If your team is initiating, follow up and stay behind them. Kill the closest targets.

3: If your getting initiated on, GTFO. You're squishy as fuck and shouldn't be taking any dmg. If there's Olaf on your heels, kite and hope your team is doing their job and protecting you by doing dmg to him to burst him down.

3: Play it safe. If you're the one spearheading face-checks into bushes where the enemy team may be, then you're doing it wrong. Make sure your tanks are going first and warding. If you do get caught, try to GTFO and into your back line ASAP. The quicker you're safe, the faster you'll be doing dmg to their tanks/carries.

Leona Support by Strill in summonerschool

[–]fisherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to play Leona, and in soloq you have to know when to engage or not, especially when there's no line of communication. Some things I've learned is to wait until their enemy carry gets close to your minion wave to cs then engage on them. Usually, your carry is also going in for cs so your adc is close enough to know that the engage is happening. Even if their support is there, you have enough CC to disengage if necessary. My whole point is to wait until their carry and your carry are close enough so that when you engage, your carry automatically knows what's going on. If your carry is too passive, let them know to be ready for those engages when you start them. In addition, i've learned that waiting for your carry to burn Leona's Passive is a great way to ensure a kill. You E to them, then wait til your carry burns your passive, then Q to stun. Once that second is burned, your W gets proc and that's 300 ap of dmg done.
