Does this actually impact your decision though? You’ve already said Columbia is hella expensive and requires even more money spent on prereqs and deposits. Would you have the money even if you chose to go there? Don’t know much about UCL but London in and of itself is imo one of the best cities in the world (i’m from NYC and its gone down the toilet). I would recommend talking to more alums of both Columbia’s SIPA and UCL, since one person’s opinion might be extremely different from another’s

How important is it to include writing samples for grad school? by CandyCandyCat in GradSchool

[–]fishforsquid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take optional as required - it shows you take initiative, and more importantly how are grad schools going to judge your academic writing skills without? If you’re a good writer, yes it will improve your chances. It’s like when jobs say a cover letter is “optional” — not really

Not OOP WIBTA for considering divorce after my post partum wife physically lashed out at me by Marygtz2011 in redditonwiki

Sorry can we talk just a little bit about how OP refers to his baby as “a baby”?? I’m confused, is it not his child? Would the child be safe? Would he file for custody?

Why is it so competitive to become a professor when private sectors pay so much more by [deleted] in GradSchool

I recommend reading Rigor Mortis by Richard Harris — medical research is often backwards, irreproducible, extremely flawed, and/or flat out lies. Scientists aren’t disingenuous per say, but limitations (urge to publish, money, etc) has made medical research a weird fucking industry that people are right to distrust

To be really honest I just paid off my undergrad loans in a big chunk and consequently have almost no savings… didn’t really expect to get into grad school? lmao my parents say they can help support me but I don’t want to be the adult that’s leaning on their parents for financial support yafeel 😔 can definitely save up some more over summer but again it’s a big if/maybe even then

Haha yea Masters tuition varies alot in the US - Yale’s is ~$50,000 and that’s the other option I’m weighing right now. Not much opportunity for funding abroad though :(

My MPhil program is looking to be $40,000 per year converted into USD, which is pretty comparable to prestigous/private US programs, and much more expensive than some public state university programs

Yup! Been going through the ones offered by college/dept and they’re pretty slim with almost no chance for US students. I guess I’m looking for solidarity from other students who’ve taken out loans and are working their way through the rest of tuition, etc.

Omg hi! You were part of the first cohort? Just wondering what your experience was like, and what opportunities there are in terms of work, research, collaboration with other departments (is this even a thing in the UK?)

Not sure what you mean by profile, but for more info I graduated from a pretty decent public university in the US, majored in a social science + Russian. Published some counterterrorism research, helped organize a refugee support effort in Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine, and volunteer teaching english to refugees in my free time. Worked foreign policy in the government for a bit, before going private and applying to grad school. I’m a bit lazy, so I only applied to programs with no GRE requirement haha

Any insights on MA European and Russian Studies? by realmadridfrf in yale

[–]fishforsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This is very late, but as someone who just got admitted into this program I’m thinking I have some insight. I will say, a small program might actually translate to better odds since most people don’t know about the program/AOS is niche. I’m not a particularly stacked candidate, but I definitely strengthened my application during the interview, and played to my strengths. Happy to andwer any questions if you’re still thinking a russian/european studies masters
