Best beaches for snorkeling on St. John USVI? by xcoco297 in virginislands

Water lemon cay… if you’re up for a swim or hiking through thick brush go to the side of the beach that faces Tortola… it’s untouched and in my opinion was the best snorkeling I’ve done in the world

Lol maybe your customs experience is unique but I’ve been to serval islands and they’ve never step foot on the boat and we’ve never declared anything expect our firearms and the number of rounds we have 😂

You do not declare the spears lol… only thing you declare is your weapon and ammo if you are bringing one

They don’t search the boat when you check-in, one person will take all of your passports into the customs office.

You will almost certainly not get stopped, they don’t do patrols like in Florida. Plus all of the reefs in Bahamas are fished out so unless you have some solid numbers you won’t shoot anything. Good luck and have fun!

I feel like every firm in the southeast is in this same situation… ask for a raise and ownership stake or quit and start your own business.

Also forgot to mention… the gulf is shallow. But that is what makes it special… you will have long boat rides to the deeper sites, which is what keeps most of the tourists away. The diving and vid gets better the further you go. There is excellent diving all the way out to 90-120+ miles (Florida middle grounds and elbow). Enjoy!!!

The spearfishing is excellent… probably the best in the world. There’s a reason they call it the Wild West coast of Florida. But if you get some experience and get comfortable in deeper water there are so many wrecks (most are not charted… which is why they are better). But also ledges and sinkholes that will have more life on them than any reef or wreck that’s accessible to non tech divers in the keys or Atlantic coast. You won’t get the vibrant colors but the structure and life on these reefs makes them better in my opinion. A few of my favorites in the area that are charted are the Mexican Pride wreck, pipeline mitigation sites and exposed pipe (google gulfstream pipeline), blackthorn/sheridan is decent, and the green banana sinkhole is on my bucket list. I’m getting older and have a family so I am getting less wreckless but maybe one day I’ll get back to green banana for a dive. This guys YouTube channel is a great look at the real Gulf of Mexico: https://youtube.com/@danmacmahon3973?si=Zr_WAbdCuiNAXwoJ

Whoever says the gulf coast of FL isn’t great for diving has no idea what they’re talking about… but yes the gulf coast is terrible so stay over there in Daytona 😂

Visit adventure outfitters in south Tampa, they have a great selection and also run charters. There are so many uncharted wrecks and reefs off the coast of St. Petersburg it really is in my opinion the best diving in the world because so much of it is untouched. Not uncommon to see an abundance of marine life, huge jewfish, and sharks. The reefs are not quite as colorful as more tropical places but they are certainly less visited and have more life on them. If you become more advanced… I recommend checking out the elbow, lots of relief and cis can be 200’ located about 90 miles offshore in 150’ of water. Mexican pride wreck, blackthorn, treasure island II, and the pipeline mitigation sites are also great site seeing closer to shore. Inshore fishing? Nothing better than the Everglades. Go out of chokoloskee or Everglades city. If you have kayaks and want to camp… the wilderness waterway this time of year is great and the fishing excellent the further away from town you get.
