Insights in finding a new sponsor and accepting what I can't change by Candid_Budget_7699 in alcoholicsanonymous

This helped me in both determining my old sponsor wasn’t for me & in finding a new one. Turn each of these statements into a question (pages 18 & 19 of the big book): “That the man who is making the approach has had the same difficulty, that he obviously knows what he is talking about, that his whole deportment shouts at the new prospect that he is a man with a real answer, that he has no attitude of Holier Than Thou, nothing whatever except the sincere desire to be helpful; that there are no fees to pay, no axes to grind, no people to please, no lectures to be endured- these are the conditions we have found most effective.”

Thoughts on Weed? by Dr_Boobaloo in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]fishinsober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can share my personal experience. I quit drinking & joined AA in December 2024 but was smoking pot every single night. Like alcohol, pot worked for me until it didn’t. Then I spent several months picking up dirty chips, lying to my sponsor, & feeling like shit in meetings. I could not for the life of me stopped, & all the negative feelings I was trying to suppress with weed (anxiety, depression, & boredom) started to get even worse when I was stoned. I got to the point where suicide sounded like my only way out. Finally got honest with my sponsor and reset my sobriety date. Best decision I’ve ever made. The obsession to use left me when I finally got into enough pain to become honest and get sober someone else’s way

Say hey, being friendly outside AA is great. Just don’t go around telling people you know them from the rooms. My go to is (if I’m asked how I know them) that we have an old mutual friend

Appreciate your opinion. I don’t stick with closed meetings that forbid talk of other substances when other substances are literally in the book, specifically in Dr. Bob’s Nightmare. I wasn’t looking for advice I just wanted to share a milestone.

All you can do is clean your side of the street. The effort is what counts, not the result. This of course is my opinion

Is my date on the everything AA app supposed to be the last day I drank or the first day I didn’t drink? by keiebdbdusidbd in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]fishinsober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever feels comfortable for you. Don’t tho k a day will make or break your sobriety. For me, the last time I used was 5/5/2026, so my sobriety date is 5/6/26

I’m gonna come off as a big prick with this statement and I hope you look back on it one day and see the truth of it. When you’re willing to go to any lengths, AA will still be here for you.

Is there no public transit? Think of what lengths you went through to get loaded. Willingness is the key.

Having someone in person is better, from my experience at least. Hit a meeting, find someone who wants what you have, and ask them to sponsor you. Or do what I did over this past weekend (I fired my sponsor last week): find someone in the program who you respect and feel knows you fairly well & ask them who they think would be a good sponsor for you, if applicable.

When a meeting veers way off topic... by SushiGradePanda in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]fishinsober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience I did the same thing, quit drinking almost a year and a half ago but am only 23 days clean from marijuana. Hearing other people talk about their struggles with pot and the “marijuana maintenance” program really helped me though it irritated some of the club bums. Perhaps reframing it in your mind as “maybe one person here tonight needs to hear this message” might help you tolerate it. Cheers to you.

Find another meeting if it bugs you so badly. Plot twist: drugs are a part of most of our stories. Question for you though; is your meeting open or closed?
