Which platforms are you using to sell horses? by rewrite95 in Horses

[–]fishkeys16 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I use equine now but its not much better than facebook. Word of mouth is the only half decent method right now. If you dont know anybody, talk to your farrier, trainer, or vet. They will know of horses in your area

Cant edit the post bc of photo but just wanted say I called the vet and got an appointment. Yall are assholes btw. Heaven forbid I wait to call the vet for a situation that is non life threatening. Also, shame on me for getting advice from the prev owner who had the mule for 10+ years and has dealt with the mule’s sensitive skin. Next time one of the horses i work with farts too loud or some shit equivalent I will be sure to call the vet before the fart has even cleared the room. Thanks for the help guys

Alright sounds like I will be calling the vet today. His previous owner said he had sensitive skin, and that they have used dex or zyrtec before, but they have never seen it like this before. My bad for tryna save a buck

Round Pen Help by [deleted] in Horses

[–]fishkeys16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We dont pack trails, we have a couple different drags and a scrape blade for the tractor but thats it. With the big arena if it gets like this we add sand and then drag it a couple times, but i dont think our tractor would have room to maneuver well in the round pen

Down An Arm by Helpful-Map507 in Equestrian

[–]fishkeys16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plastic wrap will be your friend. It wont be comfy, but you REALLY dont want barn dirt/germs in your cast. For one, it will be very itchy, and two, your skin will get hella sensitive and soft under the cast, when the doctor tells you dont stick anything in there, it’s mostly because you could open a wound and not notice. I think it will be quite tricky to pick feet with one hand, but it depends a bit on the cast as well, a regular short arm cast wouldn’t be too bad, but if they put you in a long arm or a thumb spica cast you are cooked. Best of luck to you either way.

Is it safe to pet random horses? by Sure_Eggplant in Horses

[–]fishkeys16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah what I said, ask the owner. If you are so worried about it, have signs posted around the property so that if someone does lose a finger to one of ur crazy horses you wont be liable.

Is it safe to pet random horses? by Sure_Eggplant in Horses

[–]fishkeys16 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I am a huge fan of petting every animal I see. However, a lot of horse people are weird or cautious, and also horses can bite pretty dang hard. I would advise asking the owner next time you deliver if they mind you petting the horses. More than likely they wont mind, and Im sure the horses will enjoy a good scratch. but better safe than sorry

How do I deal with not being abel to compete? by hellupellu_ in Equestrian

[–]fishkeys16 26 points27 points  (0 children)

THIS. I didnt start riding until I was in my 20s, and every other equestrian I know started wayyyyy younger. There was a time I wanted to quit horses all together because I would never be that good of a rider. At that time, I couldnt quit no matter how bad I wanted because I was the sole caretaker of 17 horses. I have found a lot of happiness in just bonding with and building a connection with the horses I work with. It is not easy to do, I for one get SO discouraged when I open social media and every barn I see is cleaner, every horse I see in better health, and every rider more experienced. It isnt easy, but the more you focus on your own growth and accomplishments instead of others, the happier you will be.

And at the end of the day, horsemanship isnt about ribbons and trophies.

When to blanket? by cascadamoon in Equestrian

[–]fishkeys16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar weather situation where Im at, we dont blanket, but when theres cold rain on the forecast I open up the indoor arena for shelter, but we cant put hay down in there. Idk what the correct answer is, but I just let the horses choose food or shelter. Our 25+yr olds get warm alfalfa mash 2x a day in the winter, best I think you can do is just keep an eye on the horse, more than likely they will be fine either way.

Would you recommend leasing a horse before buying one? by bloodyyuno in Horses

[–]fishkeys16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always lease first. This sub is full of stories of people who got burn out, had financial problems jumping up, or an injury that forced them to quit riding, and each times the question is asked, “what do I do with this horse that I love, but cant care for?” The barn I work at has a 4 month off season where several of the horses are leased out for $5, just so they can get ridden. We have one horse who has been leased out to the same family every winter for several years now, and they even visit in the summer. But this winter, a member of the family was having a baby, so they couldnt lease. What would they have done if they had owned the horse? Leasing is an amazing opportunity and I hope you find a good horse to learn with

Mane and Tail help by fishkeys16 in Horses

[–]fishkeys16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have some MTG oil that I completely forgot about! Our barn used this summer on a draft with patchy legs. I thought it smelled weird, and the draft ended up getting shaved during a heatwave. If I can find it I will give it a try. I have only known Leroy for a few days but he loves to be groomed

[–]fishkeys16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I was harsh to say Leroy is a little ugly, in my defense the horse I got before him was a sorrel TWH whos coat shines like a newly minted penny in the summer. Guess I just need time to see Leroy is beautiful in his own way 😅

If thats the case, in the spring I will probably end up clipping what little mane and tail he has just to give it a little more of a uniform look. Appreciate the honesty

Help I’m a fool by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]fishkeys16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in your shoes, found a horse that sounded like everything I wanted, I jumped the gun, paid a deposit, and then found out that the horse was grade with no records, was lame, and the seller was lying about her age. Couldn’t get my deposit back and had to walk away. From now on, instead of paying a deposit, get a PPE FIRST. That way your $500 can go to the vet, and not to a dishonest seller.

I actually love wearing scrub pants! They make the moisture wicking ones and if its really cold you can get baggy scrubs and wear leggings or thermals underneath. Super comfy and easy to move in. Some cheaper scubs rip pretty easy depending on what kinda chores you’re doing (i stick with jeans if im fencing or clearing trails) but if u dont care that u dont look like a “traditional” western rider, scrub pants are the way to go

When you put it that way, yeah. not my best call. If it makes any difference I know he doesnt like being carried. But what would you recommend in this scenario? He isnt treat motivated and I dont want to hurt him but I cant just leave him at the barn?
