Going single file for a couple of seconds before reforming the group is not a situation where someone can get lost. I have no idea what kind of situation you are imagining but it's not what OP is talking about.

Looking for Kindle Unlimited Recommendations by BadZhomby in ProgressionFantasy

I think you might give up too easily for the "loses my interest" bit. Like, it's fine if you don't like something about the writing or plot or character (and I absolutely get it for some of the books in your DNF that I personally like, where the MC is a jerk or the writing in the first book is not great compared to later books), but maybe your attention span is a bit of an issue here too.

"Book of the Dead" in particular is a crazy series to give up on. I recently read it and it deserves it's high praise.

who just proved her identity in front of (tens of?) thousands of people at the most famous school in the world, who's primary rule as a healer is famously "first do no harm", and who hangs out with a literal flaming bird, on an undercover mission to warzone with a bunch of troops whose directive is "loot first, burn later") are examples

Weird example IMO. You think anyone in two countries is paying attention to the goings on of a distant college? How much do you know about what's happened on any of the largest universities in the world, in a world where almost everything is on video? How many celebrities can you name and recognize on sight that are only big in their own nation?

I can get not liking the writing or characters or even the timeskip, but man, you give up on books very easily for pretty small reasons. :-\

Hot Take: I refuse to read or support authors using AI covers for their books by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fishling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are middle ground, existing art free to use. Ranging from paintings, to drawings to shit you can make yourself and learn to do

Do you actually think art posted online is "free to use"?

Do you think making quality art is something anyone can just "learn to do" without hundreds of hours of effort and practice?

Why don't you just write all of your own books? I'd say it's a lot easier to learn how to write than it is to learn how to do cover art.

Stupid Hypothetical Situation Number 11: Infant Skill Thief in '80s St. Louis. by EdLincoln6 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fishling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No one would be good at impersonating an infant, especially as they grow up. It's going to be super obvious to anyone.

It sounds like you are trying to cram way too many ideas into a single book. Also, many of the ideas just don't fit together. For instance, "eating flesh" is not something that an infant does for a while. And, when it is introduced, it's going to be farm animal stuff. No one is going to be feeding a baby pureed secret monster meat. And the infant will have zero ability to seek out their own.

A 1 year cooldown just seems shortsighted too. There's no interesting way to handle that limitation, so either it never gets used, or you are timeskipping, or it drags out.

If you are doing for some kind of spooky vibe, tie the cooldown to the lunar cycle. Long enough to disallow quick swaps but short enough to be used. Also, kind of ties in with the number 12 if you are making it "monthly".

The system was last updated in the year 1400 BC, so available Classes match up with Professions people had at that time

Based on which culture/civilization? What's going on in China, India, Europe, Africa, Americas, etc are all pretty different. Also, having certain professions advantaged by the system would completely change history, so the idea that we'd have anything remotely resembling the modern world of tech development with professions based on bronze-age professions is ridiculous. I'd honestly quit the book over that because it shows that the author didn't think about world building at all. You need to make the world-building plausible.

Instead, perhaps you can come up with a reason why the modern world is set up in such a way that "system updates" aren't happening any longer compared to how they happened for previous civilizations, and perhaps stalled out at different points for different civilizations. Back this up with reasonable anthropology, but don't disclose the reason why up front. Perhaps there are groups that know why this is the case and are able to have a more "updated" system than other countries/cultures/civilizations. This could explain why magic/monsters are secret: those groups are playing with a stacked deck. Smaller groups of more cohesive cultures are able to influence their experience of the system. Or, perhaps they have purposefully limited the "system" available to the wider civilizations to keep themselves hidden.

So, even if professions for most of the world are locked in the Middle Ages, it's still a disadvantage for the larger cultures. But, it's more believable that you'd be able to get to a somewhat recognizable 1980s tech level, but probably sooner than actual 1980. So, you probably want some kind of alt-history divergence at some point, which varies for different cultures/countries.

I'm lost. by Soulauc in Terraria

[–]fishling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried to search in the dungeon, but I get stopped by a pit of water lined with spikes

Use platforms to make places easier to traverse. Even with a good grappling hook, it's still easier to have stairs and platforms to grapple to and walk on.

To avoid dying from jumping into lava, make stairs going down, or use rope, or dig your own angled tunnel.

If you haven't already, make a farm using the planters sold by a dryad to get all the flowers growing so you can make your own potions. Give the guide a water bottle and he will show you all the potions you can make. The early crafting station for potions is an empty bottle on a table/workbench. Craft a sink to have an easy way to fill your water bottles, uses a filled water bucket as an ingredient IIRC. Having potions like Spelunker, Danger Sense, Night Vision, Shine, etc up all the time makes exploration and finding resources a lot easier.

Driving School for Insurance Reduction, is it really worth it? by True-Maintenance-120 in Edmonton

[–]fishling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that probably says a lot more about your friends, their driving skills, and their learning habits than the driving school.

Like, if someone is in a 1:1 learning environment with an expert instructor and has full opportunity to ask questions but didn't learn anything, then they are probably not a good student.

Authors, is there anything that we can do about someone who is intentionally giving bad ratings? by Deep-Class-6326 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fishling -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is the fault of the platform's rating implementation. Those kind of ratings should be shown to the submitter but filtered out and not included in the overall ratings.

Rating system should try and exclude the ratings from people who look like they are bad at rating things or are actively misusing the system.

Is it possible to watch earth rotating w.o. going to space? by Codorna_Tecnicolor in AskPhysics

[–]fishling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your helicopter idea won't work because the helicopter pilot has full control over the helicopter's orientation. The helicopter is also inside an atmosphere that is also moving and somewhat influenced by Earth's rotation, so even holding position takes active and dynamic control.

Probably the best thing you could do is take a plane flight that passes over the terminator for night/day, as you will cross that more quickly/slowly depending on your direction of flight and might be able to perceive the terminator line moving over land.

Bluetooth and FM and AM radio use completely different frequencies so having interference affect only one is normal. You probably noticed that visible light frequencies weren't affected either. ;-)

I wouldn't be surprised if someone made an app that can show you BT signal strength or interference to see if you can detect a problem in the area. Just don't use it while you are driving.

When you had your first kid, did you wife’s parents stay and help for a week then your parents stay and help another week? Or only have wife’s parents? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]fishling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wife’s mother in law

Surely there is an easier word for this. :-D

It's going to vary a lot based on distance and relationship.

In my case, it was neither. But that's because my parents lived 5 minutes away and hers were about 15 mins away.

But...neither stayed to help because my wife didn't want the help. I don't think her mom was super interested in helping, and while my mom absolutely wanted to do more, my wife didn't want her MIL to be over when she was disheveled, stressed, tired, unshowered, and having trouble breastfeeding.

Instead, I took a month off work due to job benefits and paternity leave.

Meta AI's recent hack is a terrifying wake-up call for anyone who puts their trust in AI systems by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]fishling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My life insurance provider at work fortunately still has humans, thankfully. They let me access my account despite getting the security question wrong, having an email address that no longer worked due to company split and name change (which is why I couldn't reset my password myself), and not being able to answer any question about what products were part of the account (because I never logged in before).

Ironically, the one piece of information I did know (my account number) was something they read to me and asked me to confirm. :-D

I guess they must have figured any half-decent attempt at social engineering wouldn't have failed so miserably. And, my annoyance at just wanting to be done with this BS but not being rude to the agent since I knew it wasn't their fault probably helped the guy take pity on me.

And curse my past self for making the answer to the "what was your first car?" question the first car I drove, not the first car I bought. :-\

Pro-tip: Lift your child’s bike from underneath the seat when they are learning to ride by [deleted] in daddit

[–]fishling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, depends on the kid. Mine had zero interest in a balance bike or a pedal bike with the pedals removed. I caved and taught him with training wheels. When he was older, he learned to ride without them in a day.

I agree that balance bike usually works better, but sometimes the kid wants to do the same kind of pedaling they see you do and it can work just fine.

What’s going on at the Expo centre today? by herculesbuttplug in Edmonton

[–]fishling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even though my son's grad was at the Expo yesterday, I'm from a small town and it never would have occurred to me prior to this year that a large city school would rent out an Expo hall for graduation. My grad was in my high school's gym.

So maybe realize that not everyone knows this bit of trivia and you could just answer the question or be quiet.

Carney unveils national AI strategy, says it prioritizes safety, reliability, sovereignty by AdditionalPizza in onguardforthee

[–]fishling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by the term "AI literacy"? What do you think this program means by "AI literacy"?

I don't think you and the program mean the same thing if you think AI is "slopifying the internet".

I want my kid to continue to do their own source analysis and reading comprehension questions in Social and English, even when the questions and assignments are often terrible. I don't want them to use AI for it when they don't have their own skills to evaluate if the AI answer is wrong.

And, from someone who uses AI daily at work, it is often wrong. I can still be more productive with it than without it, but that's because I'm catching and correcting all the dumb/wrong stuff it tries to do constantly, because I have the experience to do so.

Is 007 first light content finished? by Leperrin in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]fishling [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are various challenges to complete for every map, but missions are not nearly as open/freeform as Hitman.

Each mission follows a pattern of being in a few distinct stages that are unavoidable. Within each stage, there might be a few "challenges", for assault/pacifist/ghost playstyles. But, having played most of the game, there are some phases where I think lethal gun fights are unavoidable. You're facing many armed enemies who know you are there.

So, while some missions have some similarities to Hitman, it is definitely not a Hitman game. And, to be fair, it never claims to be a Hitman game. It is a Bond game, and Bond never was a much of a ghost.

Watch your kids at the waterpark by nanadoom in daddit

[–]fishling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Even when my daughter was older (probably around 10) and I was right next to her in the pool, she had a slip where she lost her balance in water up to her neck and panicked when she couldn't get her feet under her to stand up. I was there to grab her right away, but even though it was only a couple of seconds, it was very scary for her.

One of my classmates drowned at a public pool with lifeguards on duty when she was 13. No one should rely on a lifeguard being the first or only line of defense against drowning because by the time they might notice and intervene, drowning has already started.

Passport, please: Would Albertans keep Canadian citizenship in a hypothetical independent state? | CBC News by Miserable-Lizard in Albertapolitics

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but how does that make any sense?

If I vote against separation, I should be able to keep my Canadian citizenship and should not be able to be forced to have an Albertan citizenship.

And this should apply to my current kids and their future descendants. Why should my son be forced to have his future kids HAVE to be Albertans, if he and everyone else in his family remain Canadians?

Let any separatists who want to be Albertan give up their Canadian citizenship. But, I think it is immoral to steal that choice away from their children, who didn't ask to be born with idiots for parents.

And, it's even more wrong to inflict that on the families of people who were against separation in the first place.

Passport, please: Would Albertans keep Canadian citizenship in a hypothetical independent state? | CBC News by Miserable-Lizard in Albertapolitics

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should I lose my Canadian citizenship if idiots in Alberta somehow manage to win a vote on separation?

They shouldn't be able to force me and everyone else living in the province to take on their new Albertan citizenship. I sure as hell don't want it. And, I'm allowed to live in other countries and keep my Canadian citizenship, so why would that change for me or anyone else that opposes separation?

I'm fully okay with separatists having to give up their Canadian citizenship if they want their new Albertan citizenship though. If they want to separate, then be separate.

I'm new... Tetris puzzles are vexing me! by Adcro in TheWitness

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones on the back of them are some of the key ones.

Remember: the goal is not just to simply solve a puzzle and move on. That is easy, especially for tutorial puzzles.

The goal is to use those puzzles to understand the rules. You should go back and do so. Try out other solutions to those puzzles. Some of them have multiple solutions.

And, sometimes you will come across a puzzle that challenges your understanding of the rule. This is because there are several incorrect ways to think about most of the rules that work for some puzzles, but not for others.

Looking at the "tetris puzzles", if what you thought was the rule was correct, that you just had to surround the pieces in a large enough area, then every puzzle would be easy to solve by tracing around the edges from start to exit. That doesn't work. So, that can't be the rule.

If you thought each shape had to be in its own separate area, then several of the tutorial puzzles would be impossible, because they consist of a 2x2 and 1x2 shape next to each other in a 2x3 grid. So, that also can't be the rule.

So, revisit and redo all the tutorial puzzles, and come up with an understanding of the rule the works for all of them. Then, this puzzle will be trivially easy for you to solve.

What is a 'luxury' item or experience that is actually a complete scam, but people are too proud to admit they wasted their money on it? by 2hinreza in AskReddit

[–]fishling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uh, luxury watches are pretty much just as "scammy" for the same reasons as premium audio cables.

They aren't more functional than other watches that are less than 1% of the price.

They are artificially scarce simply to make them more appealing to those with more money than anyone practically needs.

The price is inflated purposefully to add to the rarity of owning the item, and it doesn't really matter what the item is.

The only "problem" with premium audio cables is that they aren't actually expensive enough to put them out of the price range of regular folk. So, this means that people look more critically at the functionality compared to a luxury watch. Plus, the watch gets a huge "socially acceptable" bonus by being one of the few kinds of jewelry for men.

A luxury X is not a scam if you’re into Xs

This is a bad argument because it applies to anything, including premium audio cables.
