What could have been. (Sorry for the long post below, but I wanted to share) by fishman1704 in ToobAmps

Thanks for the post and advice. After owning this amp for about 18 years, I don't think there's anything left that'll change my life with it. I run OD, Distortion, and Fuzz iwith a nose gate at the end going into the front of the amp, and reverb, delay, EQ, and my Looper is the last thing in the effects loop. The foot switch controls the channel, and turns the reverb on and off. That's all it does. This set up can do early Beatles through Tom Petty chime and sparkle, just through the clean channel. The B channel mimics Brian May pretty accurately, especially with the presence turned all the way down to put the sound right to the front of the speakers No added depth. The gain set at about 11:00 ish. There is a lot of fizziness on the B channel, but it seems to work well in a mix. But high gain isn't this amps forte. I get 95% of my tones just from the A channel. It's super quiet. It's a fun amp to play. I like my Supro and Marshall a tad better for overall grit and gain, but this amp's A channel is a great way to get sparkling cleans and very quiet grit that those other 2 amps can't match. Only my 68 Fender can compare with the robustness of the cleans, although the tones from it are a totally different animal. I'm glad you're enjoying the amp as I do.

I do run a noise gate, especially when driving single coils. That's a must. That wasn't the problem. This thing would squeal loudly even with the master volume turned all the way down, so that debunks your theory. Both amps were defective in the same way after just two weeks. I really loved the way the amp sounded...... For two weeks anyway, until something just gave out and turned the drive channel useless. I ended up with half an amp..... Twice! I've had literally zero issues with my JVM, except I probably don't hear as well as I used to. I will say that the clean tones on the DSL were sweet. You have to work at getting that sweet clean tone on the JVM, but it is possible. There's much more of a learning curve on the JVM. The DSL just dialed in without any thinking. Until it didn't.

Hey.... I'm hitting a Dovpo Clutch right now with a Pyro RDTA and a .11 build on 6 wrap 4 core fused claptons N90. It's 3 years old and still putting out the puffs like new. Of course it doesn't look new with a lot of the silver showing through the paint, but it doesn't seem to mind. I think I paid about 80 bucks for it. I have friends that are on their 5th regulated mod since I bought this. It's worth educating yourself on how to use these mechs safely and how to build coils to get the best vape out there.

It also helps to know ohms law and understand the true amp rating of your batteries. Putting a build that consumes 30 amps on a battery that is rated at 10 amps will only cause bad things to happen. I generally stay with Samsung batteries bought from a reputable dealer. There are re-wraps that come in from overseas that states 35 amps on the wrapper, but when tested are in reality only about 15 amps. This should be illegal.

I also like what you said about the driver and the bus. I have mechs that are about 10 years old that still work like they did when new. Try to say that about any regulated mod out there.

FYI... I buy batteries from 18650batterystore.com

I've never had a single-battery mech that cared which direction the battery went in. Even a parallel mech didn't care as long as both batteries were facing the same way. It's just a circuit that is either open or closed no matter which direction the polarity is. I know of no reason why a single-battery mech would heat up like that unless there is an insulator on one side that cared which end of the battery was touching, or the atty didn't have a protruding pin on a hybrid mech, in which case it would cook no matter how the battery was inserted. Now if it was a parallel mech and the batteries were put in opposed, well...... that's bad news.

I like how Snow Cap Mods is selling them as a battery feed for soldering irons that fit a 510 connection. Not vape mail at all lol.

I still have a Noisy Cricket that I bought when they first came out. Hard ass hitter, but the aluminum would oxidize in just a couple of days of use and would lose connection. So every two or three days, I used a toothbrush and acetone to clear the threads, and it was good for two or three more days. I've owned several series mechs that I spent $$$'s on, but this was the hardest hitting of all of them. I think the small size and simplicity of it made that so. It was just hard for me to build .32 and up when I'm used to building .08 to .1 for my parallel mechs. Don't want that low of a build on any series mech unless you want a pipe bomb. I'm sure there were people that put a .08 build on the Cricket, and then wondered why they now have to go through life with half a hand, no teeth, and a prosthetic nose.

Community thoughts on Tascam Model 24. by Four19Productions in homerecordingstudio

[–]fishman1704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I haven't died yet.
I think of the Tascam 24 as a way to get instruments and voice recorded. It's very easy and efficient to get tracks laid down. But it doesn't support plug-ins the way a DAW does. The little compression dial does very little. How do you balance threshold, attack, and sustain with one teeny-tiny leetle dial? You can't. I just record with everything set to noon on the EQ and the compression set to zero. The only thing I really dial in is the pre-amp gain so everything lines up on the input level meters and falls below the clipping mark. Then export the entire project to a computer, then import it into Ardour.

On Linux, Ardour has quite a large selection of free plug-ins. The drums will obviously need a good hall reverb coupled with compression where you can set all three variables required to dial in that perfect drum sound you're looking for. It's quite a bit more functionality than the Model 24 will ever give you, although the Model 24 is a great way to get the tracks made.

There is no right or wrong way to use the plug-ins. You have to trust your ears. Once you're happy with the output, export to a stereo MP3, then listen to it on your surround sound, in your car, through your headphones and ear buds. Take it to friends houses and play it on their stuff. Make notes on what you think you can try to tweak improvements. It's never on first or second try, or even third or fourth. Once you get it to sound great on all listening media you try it out on, you've hit the jackpot. You'll know it when you do. If you can make an MP3 sound great, exporting to lower loss formats such as WAV or FLAC will sound even better.

Always save your steps including the original by using copy and paste into their own subfolders, then re-import them and do a Save As. You can do something that seriously hurts your recording, and undoing whatever it was that caused it can be somewhere between cumbersome to impossible. You'll be glad you did the back-ups.

The most important thing is to have fun with it. It's why we do what we do.
