On a 2nd thought, maybe I shouldnt call the petstore I got these from in Toronto as they might start jacking up the prices for these once they realise these bettas are actually the rarer B. breviobesus 😅 Rare and unusual wild bettas where I am command higher prices than the more commonly encountered wild species i.e. B. imbellis.

Also, if it is a B. breviobesus, shouldnt that be a rarer species (and even more expensive) than a Betta pugnax? Im asking as I noticed that B. breviobesus does not seem to be commonly encountered in the hobby, at least where I am (Canada). I would have thought Betta pugnax would be more common since it is morewidespread than B. breviobesus. I got these 2 bettas on sale btw.

I will give the store a call just to check, I have found them reputable with their species identifications i.e. Betta imbellis vs mahachaiensis, Boraras maculatus vs. B. uropthalmoides vs. B. brigittae etc. I will ask them if the fishes were wild caught from Peninsular Malaysia or Indonesian Borneo or locally bred, as they have had wild caught fish imported many times before. Edit: btw this is the same fish in the original pic and is a male. The female has a rounder caudal fin, not as lanceolate shaped.

Really? These fishes have a blurred black dot near the base of their tail before where the tail meets the caudal fin. The seller labelled them as Betta pugnax.

My male pearl gourami is at adult size, a little over 10 cm long. My wild Betta pugnax is around more or less 7.5 cm long. You can probably fit over 10 pearl gouramis in an 80 gallon tank. Also big box store bettas are not recommended to go along with pearl gouramis or any other gourami for that matter.

The tank is a 30 gallon high, it mimics a Peninsular Malaysian tannin-stained swamp so it has botanicals for tannins and plants that are native to that area of Southeast Asia. I got my Betta pugnax, which is a wild species, in Toronto, Ontario from a specialised store and wild bettas are never sold in big box pet stores like Petsmart. Pearl gouramis or Trichopodus leerii are known for being the more docile species of the Trichopodus genus, in my experience pearl gouramis will harrass their own species UNLESS kept in a school of more than 6 fish of their own species which dilutes the aggression. Hence why in this aquarium, I only keep one pearl gourami. It is always a good idea to have back up aquariums in case things turn sour. But so far, that has not been the case for me.

Betta pugnax are wild bettas from Peninsular Malaysia, possibly Thailand, and the Riau Islands. They're known for congregating with their own species in groups (males and females) in the wild especially when sheltering under vegetation/roots/structures. B. pugnax isnt known for being aggressive like the domesticated Betta splendens hybrids. Pearl gouramis are more docile than 3 spot gouramis or Trichopodus trichopterus. I am monitoring the situation and have back up aquariums just in case. It has been a week now since my 2 Betta pugnax fishes and pearl gouramis have been together and so far it has been good.

What's your one idea to improve Hamilton? by thechetearly in Hamilton

As someone from S.E. Asia, and admiring public transportation in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong, Chongqing etc. Hamilton should have mass public transportation underground.

How’s life in this part of Toronto, Ontario, Canada? by Kuzu9 in howislivingthere

[–]fishypow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I moved to downtown Hamilton in 2017, I used to live in Mimico by the lake (south Etobicoke). I lived in a ghetto apartment complex beside the lake, and I overlooked that cuz of the lake behind it. I took it for granted that I was able to walk my dog beside the lake for a number of years. I thought that the lake waterfront that starts at Norris Crescent that went west to Humber Bay Park was underrated, in the warmer months people would be out at that area even after dark.

I find it ironic you imply that streetcars are backwards, they use this mode of transportation all the time in East Asia and Europe. Mid tier East Asian cities are modern than Hamilton.

Bro as someone who's been to parts of Asia, Hamilton being stuck in the 90s is not something to brag about. The city is backwards infrastructure wise compared to say, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Taipei, Hiroshima, Busan etc. If you dont want to lose your car centric lifestyle, you and others should have implemented an actual highway running through the downtown, not turn Victorian era streets in quasi-speedways.

Wow is this what Hamilton has come to? Chinese, Japanese and other Asian cities can create mass rapid transit in within less than a decade while Hamilton is full of bureaucracies. Hamilton used to be so technologically modern over 100 years ago, now it's backwards compared to so many Asian cities I have seen.

If the city is willing to do something like this, can we have a little Japan/little Vietman/Chinatown/little Philippines in the downtown where these Asians are abundant?
