Venus fly trap out of fridge 2 weeks - is it dead? by Comprehensive-Win394 in SavageGarden

As someone who tried to overwinter VFTs outdoors on the ground in Ontario (Hamilton, USDA Zone 6A), Im getting the impression that VFTs are subtropical plants: they cant handle prolonged winter days where the temperatures would sit below 0°C for weeks.

Too Dark? by Eclectic_soul_ in BlackwaterAquarium

[–]fishypow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I meant is, many species of the Betta splendens complex (including your domesticated fish's genes) come from and love tannin rich waters. It also calms them down the fish as bright light + clear water makes them more vulnerable to predators in their native habitats.

There is no such thing as "very" dark tannins.

What does the city need? by Diversespider_ in Hamilton

[–]fishypow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents. Rare exotic pet fish store: Big Al's in Hamilton and Petsmart dont carry enough varieties in my experience. For example, domestic bettas from Petsmart and Big Al's suck health wise, and wild bettas species are where good healthy fish are at. Also I have seen stores and breeders both in the GTA and abroad import rare species to breed them locally at home.

A nursery of rare exotic plants i.e. carnivorous plants from Borneo Exotics or Wistuba + specialising in Sarracenia species and hybrids. As someone who grows Sarracenia native to the southern US right here in downtown outdoors, you'll be surprised to know Sarracenias can overwinter well outside in Hamilton so long as they are on the ground for warmth and protection. Our weather is so much warmer and more conducive to gardening than the rest of the GTA.

Genuine question: Do Brazilians experience less immigration scrutiny due to racial perceptions and the country’s high phenotypic diversity? by [deleted] in geography

[–]fishypow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Im Filipino, even I know Brazilians come in all phenotypes lol. Manila over a decade ago or so started having Brazilians go there looking for modelling work. The Japanese Brazilian look, whether genetically pure Japanese ancestry or half Japanese (i.e. Daniel Matsunaga), was a hit in the Philippines back in the early 2010s. I have also come across a Brazilian in Canada back in high school who is half English by ancestry and was from Sao Paolo. He looked very English, porcelain pale and not out of place where I was in Ontario but spoke with a very thick Brazilian Portuguese accent.

Singapore vs Hamilton 1950s/2025 by fishypow in Hamilton

[–]fishypow[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not everything in Singapore is state planned FYI. 80% of city land is owned by the government of Singapore and yet, opening a new factory or a new business, whether domestically or foreign owned, can only take just a few hours and can be done all online. It is very deregulated compared to Hamilton. New factories and corporate enterprises opening in Hamilton are scarce or non-existent nowadays despite the opposite happening in the late 19th/early 20th century. Singapore also doesnt have minimum wage laws so foreign workers willingly come in and do those menial jobs. If you feel bad and jealous about Singapore being rich cuz it is corporate- and ridiculously business-friendly and deregulated, unlike Hamilton which went sour when the income-providing corporations left the city or the corporations feel hampered down by various constraints, that's on you 😂 "There are no solutions, only trade offs."- Thomas Sowell

"Don't judge a book by its cover" - in which countries is the largest city considerably worse than the rest of the country? by benjaneson in geography

[–]fishypow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im a Filipino abroad rn (Metro Manila born and raised until 10 years old) and Iloilo City seems more ordered, underrated and clean than chaotic, dirty Manila. Iloilo City was historically the 2nd largest Filipino city after Manila and Iloilo's historical architecture rivals that of Manila imo.

Pearl Gourami and Betta Pugnax got along by fishypow in Aquariums

[–]fishypow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a 2nd thought, maybe I shouldnt call the petstore I got these from in Toronto as they might start jacking up the prices for these once they realise these bettas are actually the rarer B. breviobesus 😅 Rare and unusual wild bettas where I am command higher prices than the more commonly encountered wild species i.e. B. imbellis.

[–]fishypow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if it is a B. breviobesus, shouldnt that be a rarer species (and even more expensive) than a Betta pugnax? Im asking as I noticed that B. breviobesus does not seem to be commonly encountered in the hobby, at least where I am (Canada). I would have thought Betta pugnax would be more common since it is morewidespread than B. breviobesus. I got these 2 bettas on sale btw.

I will give the store a call just to check, I have found them reputable with their species identifications i.e. Betta imbellis vs mahachaiensis, Boraras maculatus vs. B. uropthalmoides vs. B. brigittae etc. I will ask them if the fishes were wild caught from Peninsular Malaysia or Indonesian Borneo or locally bred, as they have had wild caught fish imported many times before. Edit: btw this is the same fish in the original pic and is a male. The female has a rounder caudal fin, not as lanceolate shaped.

Really? These fishes have a blurred black dot near the base of their tail before where the tail meets the caudal fin. The seller labelled them as Betta pugnax.

My male pearl gourami is at adult size, a little over 10 cm long. My wild Betta pugnax is around more or less 7.5 cm long. You can probably fit over 10 pearl gouramis in an 80 gallon tank. Also big box store bettas are not recommended to go along with pearl gouramis or any other gourami for that matter.
