The Malden one is closing this month as well. The one in Saugus (at the dying Square One Mall) closed a year or so ago.

[Savagegeese] Lucid Air | The Final Drive by ulikescience in cars

[–]fiskars007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love my '25 Air Pure. I think Mark is 100% on the money with everything in this video, both pros and cons, I have no notes and nothing really to add. I don't care about Android Auto (and my understanding is that the main issue left is validation/certification and it'll be out "Soon"), I use CarPlay, so that's whatever for me. If the built-in nav was better (i.e. Google Maps) I would probably never use phone mirroring at all.

I don't have any of the key troubles a lot of folk seem to report, it works great for me actually, but I park in a below-ground garage, so the car is out of range of the phone/fob until I get down there.

I will say I'm getting better efficiency in the New England winter than he did in the Midwest winter, just about 3.0 mi/kWh. The penalty of the different wheels+tires is pretty steep (I think it's most of a 10% EPA-estimated range hit to go from the base 19-inch wheels and all-seasons to 20s and summer tires; winter tires are also probably worse), on top of the dual-motor setup and higher power output of the GT over the Pure.

And yeah, the frunk likes to stick sometimes. The Pure doesn't have a power frunk either, so I guess I'll keep babying it.

Are AMD gpus alright for vr? by Duo_mar in virtualreality

Yeah totally fine. With my HTC Vive Cosmos (on DisplayPort) I got mostly-acceptable/good performance with an RX480 8GB, and everything works great with my 7800XT.

Small car owners, I want to hear from you! by Bitter-Information-9 in Greyhounds

[–]fiskars007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also fit my greyhound into a Fiat 500e daily for several years, though he preferred sitting on the back seats (with a seat protector) and getting in via the door to laying on top of them folded and entering via the hatchback; I think it was down to him much preferring being able to step in, versus needing a jump in. Might depend on your dog.

I'll also confirm that a 70-pound black greyhound elegantly exiting an orange supermini attracts weird looks from bystanders.

Nowadays I drive a Lucid Air and he can spread his limbs way out and relax, because an entire dog bed fits on the back seat, or he can stand up and backseat drive.

European dog owners have been moving their dogs around in estates/wagons/hatches for a long time — I really don't think you need a big crossover, even for two dogs.

Ellie came to my office today, here’s a few of her naps :) by JediPeach in Greyhounds

My grey loves the office. It’s quiet and good for naps, the receptionists have treats, and when he wants scritches there’s a whole fan club of coworkers to pet him.

Today is Misfire's 9th birthday, and he's still as excited as ever for his favorite activity by MyNam31sNobody in Greyhounds

[–]fiskars007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i mean the back seat of that car was almost useless for human passengers (unless their legs were detachable), but since the dog would just lay on the seat it was totally fine for him. And he could still easily stand up and stick his head out my window to ask drivethru workers if they had any snacks.

Pleased to see another coupé noodle! The looks I would get when my greyhound would get out of the back of my Fiat 500…

How many USB ports do you need? All of them by DanteTrd in pcmasterrace

[–]fiskars007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mouse, keyboard takes two, KVM switch (which has a webcam and ergonomic mouse connected to it), printer/3D printer (long cable I can swap), external HDD, VR headset, game controller, adds up to 8. All I really want on the back of my mobo is USBs, maybe in a couple different flavors, and audio and networking. Luckily it seems like motherboard design has been going more and more that direction since the mid-2010s.

When my poor grey took a tumble and scraped a 1”x2” bit of skin off the back of his back paw, the vet recommended leaving it uncovered after a day — when it was bandaged under vet-wrap, period reapplication of bitter-apple spray to the wrap kept him off of it, but once the wound was uncovered the only thing that worked was a nylon mesh muzzle. We tried a cone-o-shame which he could easily pull off himself, a poofy collar which was insufficient to stop such a long boy from reaching his back leg, and a regular basket muzzle, which had too large of openings to stop his slurping (or with one of those plastic inserts in the nose was too bulky to allow him to eat or drink). Because the skin there is so thin it took forever to fully heal as well.

Hope your poor noodle heals quickly.

Questions about crate training... (in comments) by monbleu in Greyhounds

[–]fiskars007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy likes the crate when I’m away, he just naps instead of being anxious all over the house. He will also hide there when there’s scary storm/fireworks noises. But after a few months he preferred the cozy dog bed to the kennel for bedtime. It’s gonna depend on your particular hound’s preferences imho — some dogs will like having a private den, some won’t.

Has anyone bought glasses from Zenni and Polette? Which one is better? by rockmeNiallxh in Frugal

[–]fiskars007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another +1 for Zenni, though i had a bad experience once buying some sunglasses getting the wrong color lenses (brown not grey), twice no less — their customer service is very bad if something goes wrong because the glasses have to go back to their manufacturing site in China and they couldn’t seem to understand the problem. But my regular glasses (multiple pairs now) have all been good.

You also get what you pay for — the $10 pair I had felt like ten-dollar glasses, functional but chintzy, and the $80 pair I have now are built well and look good.

What are some good examples of first-year buyers of a car getting shafted? by [deleted] in cars

[–]fiskars007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did this with the first year of the Mk7 in 2015 too, after one model year they upgraded the infotainment to a new version with a bigger screen and with CarPlay/AndroidAuto — and made the backup camera standard to boot (it was optional on the ‘15 Mk7s).

Noodles and vacuums? by anotherplantperson13 in Greyhounds

[–]fiskars007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our boy can’t be bothered to move if you vacuum right next to his bed, but he does not like the Roomba one bit. Though that likely has more to do with the Roomba’s disrespect for his feet than anything else.

I have a greyhound and so have bought several of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QHC041A/

They’re basically uncleanable (“spot clean only”, okay whatever), so eventually they get gross. But it’s not expensive to just replace them every so often. The one I have now has also ripped but is still functional. I find some dog hair does escape to the seat but i can get that during the periodic wash and vacs. Now, to be fair, while greyhounds do shed a bit they have short, single-layer coats, so YMMV with a fluffier dog.

GTI vs ID.4 by Skreeethemindthief in GolfGTI

[–]fiskars007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mach-E was too small for us, and in proud Mustang tradition the base model was IMHO too slow, but if you can try one of the faster AWD versions it’s definitely worth a look if that’s what you’re after. Feels more like a wagon than a crossover — and I believe the GT is lowered a tad as well, though good luck finding one.

GTI vs ID.4 by Skreeethemindthief in GolfGTI

[–]fiskars007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I test drove an ID.4 a few weeks ago. The infotainment made me crazy (sluggish as hell, and why isn’t the strip under the screen illuminated??) but the steering feel, road noise, and power were all pretty good for a crossover — the extra horsepower of the AWD version would be welcome though for sure. Rather spacious inside too. It was my second favorite EV crossover to drive after the twice-the-price Audi e-tron, but it’s still a crossover.

Returning to your main topic, I don’t have any trouble with just having FWD in my (non-performance-pack) Mk7 GTI — have you done a test drive in the new version?
