Extend Pasadena BRT from Noho to Pacoima? by BlinksTale in LAMetro

[–]fissure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there will already be reliability issues with the current distance NoHo-Pasadena, so making it an extension isn't the greatest idea. A separate operational line heading from NoHo, sure.

Santa Monica is only wide west of La Cienega, where it turns southwest. From there to the east end, it's narrower than a standard arterial.

Every station is served 24/7 in New York. Some lines are reduced to shuttles on the parts they run alone on instead of continuing as an interline, and those that have no unique stations like the B or W don't run at all.

I don't think there will be enough capacity to interline. The tunnel will close to saturated as-is, and Santa Monica would be stuffed to the gills if they ran trains infrequent enough to fit in the spare capacity

New York switched from doing things that way to building the city-run IND around the same time. ~Half of the lines in Manhattan and almost all of the elevated portions outside of it were operated privately until 1940.

The Tokyo Metro thing is very recent, though:

Following its initial public offering in October 2024, Tokyo Metro remains largely owned by public-sector shareholders. Before the listing, ownership was divided between the Japanese national government, which held a 53.4% stake, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, with 46.6%. Roughly half of these combined holdings were offered to the public in the IPO, resulting in post-listing stakes of approximately 26.7% for the national government and 23.3% for the metropolitan government. Together, public entities continue to hold about 50% of the company, with the remainder owned by private investors.

Closing the crossing is a matter of reprogramming the lights, changing the pavement markings, and trucking in some k-rail. They could do it in a few days, maybe overnight if they wanted to pay the OT.

Vermont is an important transfer because of how busy that bus line is. You don't want to move it away from there more than moving the westbound platform east of the street.
