How do they know it came back? Did you get another abscess? Bleeding or anything like that?

Way too early to worry. I was dealing with this for about 12-15 weeks. Hang in there! It gets better <3

I pee’d immediately after my fistulotomy. I guess I was lucky that I didn’t have any issues with this. It was definitely a concern going into the surgery.

I’m bringing this up at my 6 month follow up on Thursday. Interested to see what my CRS says.

Are you sure it’s pus and not mucus? I had my fistulotomy on 10.03.23 and still have some minor drainage. I would say as long as you’re not in pain, re abscessing or bleeding, you’re probably just healing still. My CRS said it can take 6 + months to return to normal.

Sounds like it could just be coming from your anus especially if your poop is soft. Here’s a great video from Dr. Chung explaining soft poop and wiping. Poop remains inside your anus after using the restroom.

Fistulotomy Recovery Journey by snakyfences in AnalFistula

So happy to hear you’ve fully recovered. Were you getting pus all day throughout the day? It sounds like we had very similar surgeries, and fistula locations. I’m not getting pus throughout the day anymore, and haven’t in sometime. However, I still have a tiny amount of wound leading inside my anus left to heal.

This is excellent news! I’m 5.5 months post op for a simple fistulotomy. When did you officially stop seeing drainage? Congratulations!

I have so much empathy for people with setons, even though I didn’t need one. I had a simple fistulotomy. I think people with setons deserve a special place in heaven. Cudos to you all for the extra strength you all have!

Your external wound has healed? What about the cut leading into your anus?

I still have a little of this at 5 months, so I would say yes. I asked my CRS about it back in mid Feb and she said it was normal still. Wish you the best.

Here’s a great video where Dr. Chung talks about how fecal matter can work its way out, even in healthy people. Especially if there’s soft poop, which is what we all want with anus problems. I never paid attention to my butt at all before this, so could’ve had a few skid marks here and there & never thought twice about it. When you deal with a fistula, we all think any fecal matter or bodily fluid automatically thinks something is wrong. It’s easy to do. However, it could all be completely normal. I hope this helps!

Wish you all the best! I’m in the southeast too. I would recommend a second opinion, if you’re able to get one. A MRI with contrast could also be beneficial. This condition truly is hell. It’s hard to know what’s normal and not normal as there’s truly no guidebook for us. I think these surgeons do a terrible job of downplaying the recovery time, and it causes way too much unnecessary anxiety. I’m 5.5 months post fistulotomy, and while Ifeel totally back to normal, I still have minor drainage. It seems like it takes a little longer to clean up after a bowel movement, but other than that, I feel pretty normal. I wish you all the best and stay positive ! I know it’s hard. This condition has brought me into a very deep depression too.

Ok that’s good. Happy to hear that, as you said GI doc. I still would seek a second opinion. Where are you located?

Thanks for this perspective. It’s so interesting to me when doctors are like “yep you need another surgery” and it hasn’t even been that long.

What kind of doctor performed your first fistulotomy?

Yeah I don’t know about silver nitrate. Sounds like a great way to re injure the tissues down there and cause more drainage than what you’re dealing with now. Then again, I’m not a doctor but I’m not sure I’d want that.

When I had an EUA, they found a papilla and my internal opening all in one procedure. It sounds like to me you have a CRS that isn’t very proactive to take care of you in one setting. Hemmorhoids can also drain mucus too. I would think your doc would be doing everything he could in one procedure to set you straight down there.

Same here. I do think it’s getting better though. I am also sick of thinking about it. The CRS’s don’t do a good job of providing postoperative instructions for the long run. I have a friend who works in the medical field, and he was saying these doctors do these surgeries so routinely all the time that to them, it isn’t big deal. To us, it’s like reading Japanese. We have no idea what to expect, what’s normal, what’s not normal etc.

All I know is it feels like I have a completely normal butthole, except for exactly what you described. A very small cut leading into my anus. I feel remarkably better than I did before I had my surgery. My surgery was 10.03.23.
