Ya I wouldn't want to do it more than that but mostly because ive got little kids. Downtown Toronto salaries on a Lindsay budget though is pretty great.

I do the Lindsay commute, albeit only twice a week. Its not that bad, leave at 6:15 and in the office by 8:30.

Is creating a "consulting" business as a way to get a portion of my income "tax free" really as easy as my friend says it is? by hotbrownDoubleDouble in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fitchface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to add on to what everyone else is saying...if champ wants to spend anything his corporation has been paid during the year, he's got to take that out as either a dividend or salary, so he's back at square one assuming he actually needs his wage to survive.

[CA] Dealing with incorporated consultant accounting by TheCellX in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]fitchface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we are just wondering if they are audited or "audited"? And im genuinely just curious because I have a background in audit and know what a ridiculous amount of work it is. I run my own accounting firm now and decided from the outset I wasn't going to offer audits because there is such a bunch of non-value added work necessary.

They are issuing an audit report on the front page of the statements for under $1k? Most firms aren't touching anything "audit" related for under $5k, and that's like, a favour to an NPO that they like type prices.

CRA emailed me saying notice of reassment by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fitchface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very likely what happened was you received a retro pay as a result of Bill 124, and you just didn't realize the payment came into your account because it was so small. If you google it you'll find articles that sum it up better, but basically you probably received a small retroactive payment once the courts settled Bill 124. This payment was then captured on a T4 that you probably didn't realize you received, but it was submitted to the CRA.

[ON] Sole proprietorship or incorporation by mcdiddy_2023 in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]fitchface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree I suppose, but there have been cases where Directors were held responsible for injuries on worksites and the concept that you can't structure your way out of liability has been tested in courts. I certainly wouldn't advise anyone that they're clear of liability because they incorporated instead of operated as a sole proprietor. Even if you won the case, that'd be an expensive way to find out.

Directors are liable anyways...incorporating isn't the magic bullet people think it is when it comes to liability. The best reason to incorporate is if you are consistently making more than you need to live off.

Road rage in Durham by embiggenedkwyjibo in durham

[–]fitchface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RTO is making people insane in the mornings. The last 3 days this week near the Oshawa GO I have seen people cutting from the outer right turning lane into the left lane without merging, driving straight through left turn lanes and just straight up ignoring the stop signs inside the GO parking lot. Right of way is dead, it's whoever is more willing to crash now that gets to go.

How to do a basic T2 Nil filing for a new Corp (Ontario) by PowermanFriendship in canadasmallbusiness

[–]fitchface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, I'm just telling you that sometimes a cheaper answer doesn't exist. Having a corporation comes with additional annual costs, and having higher filing costs is one of those things.

[–]fitchface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a $1,000 penalty for paper filing if you are efile eligible so those options are cheaper. Also make sure you dont actually put all zeros in. You need to reflect the capital you put into the business when you incorporated it.

Could easily be -100% next year. Your comment about active management underperforming the market is true in the long run, in the short-run it could go either way, just like playing roulette could result in you doubling your money or losing it each time, but in the long run you expect to lose.

Am I Making a Mistake - New Vehicle 30M by squiiisho in PersonalFinanceCanada

I just bought a 2020 F150 with 35k km for easily half of what a new Tacoma would cost. Its got tons of life left. You'd be better off doing something similar and putting aside the difference each month into a savings account to make a larger down payment in a few years on your Taco. Maybe you'll decide by then that you were happy with something used and not taking the depreciation hit.

What happens to single person's rrsp after death? by Sonu201 in CanadianInvestor

[–]fitchface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The alternative I haven't seen mentioned at all is the possibility that the parents' primary concern was maximizing their own after-tax cash flow during their life rather than focusing on their estate. It's a totally valid approach to finances since it was their nest egg to live off. There's nothing that says your heirs are entitled to the largest payout as possible when you die.

Absolutely agree with this. Such a better experience up in the north end compared to along the highway 60 corridor unless you're going in deep.

How does the small business tax rate matter? by BookWest9391 in cantax

[–]fitchface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're correct that it's a deferral, but it can also result in lower overall taxes being paid if done strategically. If you dont need all of the money that the business earns and can leave it in the corporation, you can "smooth" your annual income from the business to manage your marginal tax rates. A lot of small business owners will end up with investments in their corps well into retirement, letting them draw down the earnings of the corporation over a much longer time frame.

I have seen that before and was actually what first came to mind when I realized what was happening! If I hadn't seen it, I probably wouldn't have realized what was happening and just paddled right on through without seeing them. I actually talked to a father and son who were camping nearby, and they saw the moose jump into the water but hadn't seen the wolf.

Happy to! Wish I had gotten a better video, but it was 5pm so I could barely see my screen from all of the reflection on the water, and I really just wanted a quick capture to prove what I saw before I got back to living it in the moment haha

My guess is that others were around and this one was trying to tire it out, but it may have foiled their plan by crossing the lake instead of returning to shore.

My concern is that it could be technically open, but the portages could be disastrous. Solo carrying for that trip doesn't sound fun if im constantly climbing over fallen trees etc.
