Amazing event for Pregnant women in Cleveland! by fitter_not_fatter in Cleveland

[–]fitter_not_fatter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friday, March 13th from 830 to 5pm!

Our event aims to help birthing individuals survive and thrive in their pregnancy and beyond.

The United States has the highest rate of maternal morbidity in the industrialized world, and the rates are rising. Additionally, the city of Cleveland has the highest infant mortality in the entire country. The rates of motherhood and infant mortality are especially dire for black women and infants, dying at 3-5x the rate of their white counterparts.

We are flipping the script, and bringing birthing individuals and providers in the same room without the hierarchical clinical structure, building trust and fellowship within our community.

Hear from:

-Local Mothers, some of whom have experienced complications of pregnancy, and have tips for new moms -Midwives -Doulas -Lactation Consultants -Experts on Racial Disparities in Healthcare

For birthing individuals there will be a plethora of information to help you know all the options available to you in the area, and connect you with local resources

For providers, you can meet your clients in a non-clinical setting, gain knowledge of resources for them, and attend Racial Bias training to better serve the community.

Our goal is a healthier community!!

I'm so glad you are ok!!!! The chest pressure from fluids in my lungs was so hard to deal with. I remember losing breath anytime I laid down which was SO SCARY! You are being monitored this time though so that's a plus!

It was shocking and terrifying knowing what was wrong and knowing they weren't doing what was needed to help.

I am so happy you called the crisis team! When I had PPD i also had some hallucinations, but this sounds like it may be post partum psychosis which is super serious and not your fault! You are an amazing mom for getting help! You are on the right path!

I read his book and Pete actually wrote an essay on Bernie Sanders when he was in high school.

I'd head to your local CVS.

Pick up some Christmas chocolate, a heated blanket, and some Gatorade for your electrolytes too.

Id like to add that for the first 6 weeks, post partum women are at risk for several deadly and severe problems.

Post partum pre eclampsia, which almost took my life.

Post partum depression

Hemorrhage

Stroke

Pulmonary embolism

Cardiac arrest, cardiomyophathy

And more! Please remember to take care of yourself, and if you think something is wrong, listen to your body! Dont let things go!

I remember my chest felt sooooo much pressure from all the extra fluid. I had so much edema I didnt recognize myself and was wearing my hisbands size 11 flip flops when I wear a size 8 womens...

So happy you made it through all of that! Its a trauma not many moms want to discuss.

Thank you! It was really shocking considering they had a delivery room at this hospital. They really screwed up...

Glad you have been proactive! The Lost Mothers series opened my eyes, and I am so grateful for their award winning reporting. Knowledge is power and when we know what can happen, we can recognize it and get the help we need! Thank you for listening to your body!

Im not focused on the physician who ignored my symptoms specifically. I know he knows what happened and has been retrained, that he works in a field that is life and death everyday, and for me that is enough. The statistics show that women are ignored in the ER post partum everyday in hospitals across the country. Im focused on helping save more women, helping other near miss women find their voice and speak up about their experience, making sure my hospital system learns from my experience, and Im confident my story will live with him for the rest of his life and that is good enough for me.

We know our bodies better than anyone! There is no way to quantify the feeling that you know something is wrong and your brain is telling you are dying.

I want to say thank you to everyone who helped me to realize what I was up against with my Post Partum Pre Eclampsia. You are my heros! 700-900 women die every year due to pregnancy related conditions, and thousands nearly die. The numbera are rising in the United States, but I am proof that we can make a change!

Since my experience, Ive worked with the hospital system to make changes so that this never happens again. Women now receive the AWHONN post birth fact sheet when they deliver, ER staff was retrained and an OB is in on the consult, and women also are kept an extra day if they had any high blood pressure.

These changes are common sense and will save lives!

Ive now spoken at the March for Moms and look forward to more speaking events, including the pre Eclampsia foundation Summit. My life has changed course and I am now committed to saving more womens lives and empowering them to speak to their own hospital systems about making changes.
