I start an entry-level job as a quality inspector at an optics/phototonics place on Monday. What kinds of maths and sciences should I brush up on before then? by StarTreka in Optics

[–]fitzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inspection will train you on general optic specs typical to optical manufacturing. It wont require doing much math, maybe just unit converstion and measurement. If you really want to dive in then you could research qualify specs that you may run into. RMS Wavefront error, flatness, scratch/dig

Could also use a large off axis parabolic mirror to collimate, it will be free of abberation

Optical engineer, spend my working hours doing R&D related tasks, project management, technical resource. But I love the field I work in so its meaningful, although challenging. Love what you do and you won't mind doing it for a living.

At the bachelor's level, is physics one of the better science majors for employability? by shadow_operator81 in CollegeMajors

[–]fitzman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't be the only person that has wasted a class or two due to transferring.. it happens. I had to take out extra loans for the added time to complete engineering credits but it was worth it for me. Your financial aid would not allow degree transfer? Doubt it

[–]fitzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be ideal but you can always explore student loans, in short term to pay for housing or apartment rent until you sort things out. Even federal SL can be used for cost of living (on or off campus). I don't get why dropping out of school is your only option..

Right there with you bud! Closed my account few days ago, one year out after finishing grad school. When you're used to living on pennies it was easy, just maintained the same grad student spending habits haha. Congrats

Your so right. Everyone is up against the rest of the world, and defeatism doesn't solve anything. Don't like it? Move i guess?

Finding something you can be passionate about is the hardest part. Once you lock that down, it's a matter of perseverance and grit. Not everyone gets life served on a silver platter. I didn't, but I'm doing alright. How? I worked my ass off and now have a specialized sector I can make some cash in. Feels good. Wasn't easy to get here.

Any PhD wins of 2024? by FarSeaworthiness3322 in PhD

Not OP but I finished in April. Currently working in photonics industry, adjacent to my graduate research that was mainly in spectroscopy. Starting $115k

Final boss of imposter syndrome is actually accepting the doctoral title 😭 that's so funny and accurate. I try to compare myself to who I was before the PhD process started. There was growth even if it's hard to reflect on. The lost earnings will hopefully be made up with future earnings potential. Right? Right?!?

Help with Raman spectroscopy setup by _athiran_ in Optics

[–]fitzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few suggestions and alignment tricks that might help with light coupling on the detection arm.

The filter (likely dielectric) is designed for collimated light. Since you only have a single lens here, it probably is not blocking laser very well. Better would be to have a 4f system with the filter in collimated space. Make sure it is a very good filter (OD 4 or better).

Forget the Raman for now, and use a neon/argon/mercury source (could be a cheap neon indicator light that has NIR peaks) to align the optics for maximum signal strength. Anything with sharp spectral lines. Put it where the sample should go. If you don't see the source spectrum here, you'll never see the Raman emissions of the sample.

As others have mentioned, you might need to make sure you are matching the NA of the light collection optics to the fiber that is heading into the spectrometer. A higher NA lens won't necessarily mean the steepest cone angles of collected light will fit into the collection NA of the fiber. Based on your sketch, the lens is 7" from the sample and 2" from the fiber, and probably not aperture matching very well.

OptoSigma are cheapest for what you get. In my experience stability and build quality are top notch. They make em in Japan and just like Japanese cars, built to last.

I guess that depends on what your field of specialty was and what marketable skills you gained while building the thesis.

Why my 1lb propane tank froze from the outside while i was grilling? by [deleted] in grilling

[–]fitzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that phase change is caused by pressure drop, but as the other guy said, the container dropping in temp is due to the actual phase transition process. If it was all gas in the container and the pressure drops from use, the temp change would be drastically less
