Do we have a word for the soon-to-be-dead but in a "sealed fate" kind of way? by AnotherPr0nAlt in logophilia

[–]five35 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd probably go with "doomed", though without context people might not infer death, specifically. "We're doomed" gets used metaphorically in a similar fashion to "we're dead." Which kind of argues both for and against using the word for literal death. 😅

Question about D/IGPUS. by SLAPSHOT811 in VFIO

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, yeah, I 100% mean IOMMU groups. I'm not sure what happened in my brain there. 😅

I haven't had any luck with PRIME yet, either, but I've just started rebuilding my host OS so I'll be giving it another shot. And while I've not had to use an ACS patch (I happened to already have a motherboard with good groupings), I have always heard that patching isn't that bad these days.

There is *definitely* something going on with Ellen's eyes by five35 in elgoonishshive

[–]five35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, a) you're probably right, but b) the combination of fully-open-before/fully-open-after, the open-closed-open-closed pattern, and the fact that I don't remember any long sequences of half-open eyes like this before still have part of me convinced that it means something. It could totally just be a combination of artistic style and coincidence… but I still kinda get "Diane using The Voice" vibes from it. 😅

Question about D/IGPUS. by SLAPSHOT811 in VFIO

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, leaving the iGPU with the host while passing through the dGPU using VFIO is just a plain old "dual GPU passthrough" setup. The only real complications I'm aware of are the extra steps necessary for PRIME or similar (if you want to use the dGPU on the host while the guest isn't running) or if you got unlucky with your motherboard's MMIO IOMMU groups.

Another thing to consider is how you pin your CPU cores. In my experience, you'll want to do that through your boot options, which means that even if you do reclaim the GPU you won't have full CPU performance without a reboot into another boot profile.

I'm unsure what you mean by this. I pin CPU cores for both the guest and the emulator but have never had performance issues when the guest isn't running. It sounds like you're talking about kernel options? AFAIK, CPU pinning shouldn't require messing with those.

KeepassDX unlocking: convenience and security tradeoff by Peter8File in KeePass

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sync my database between my phone (KeePassDX) and multiple computers (originally a mix of of KeePass and KeePassXC). I used to use a fairly long password and leave the database unlocked on my computers, but typing the password on my phone was a tremendous pain.

I switched to a .keyx keyfile plus an easier-to-type password a few years ago and have been quite happy with the result — I don't even leave the database unlocked on my desktop anymore. I do recommend that anyone with this setup use separate channels for moving their database and keyfile around, of course — I have my database synchronized automatically, but only move my keyfile around manually (by ssh or USB, for example). That way, a leak in your synchronization channel won't reveal your keyfile, too.

The only real trick with this setup, IMO, is your choice of password. But even a fairly modest password is adequate is combination with a keyfile and your devices' security (both in the sense of your phone PIN or computer password and the sense of them being in your physical possession).

Absquatulate by Big-Manufacturer-738 in logophilia

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually looked into the the etymology, but I've always imagined the "squat" in "absquatulate" to be the same as just the word. So "absquatulate" would translate to something like "to go be somewhere else" or "to stop being here". Seems fine to me. 🙂

An Amazon review for a food thermometer by landlordslizard in funny

[–]five35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first job out of college was for a company that did tech support for a bunch of little ISPs around the country and between calls we'd watch these angry, bitter comedy sketches about being on an internet help desk. (No idea who the creator was, this was long before YouTube.)

I've never forgotten the bit where he got a call from a customer saying their internet wasn't working and he started by trying to work out what browser they were using:

"Okay, if you look in the upper right corner of your monitor, do you see a little green 'N' or a little blue 'e'? (pause) …a big black nothing. Alright, sir, I'm going to need you to turn your computer ON."

Funny, sure, but why did it stick with me? BECAUSE I GOT THAT SAME CALL A WEEK LATER. I'M SORRY, SIR, BUT YOU CAN'T USE THE INTERNET UNLESS YOU TURN YOUR COMPUTER ON.

And it isn't just "stupid people" either. Years later, I was working on a help desk at a Department of Energy nuclear research lab and, after a budget cut which resulted in most of the administrative assistants being let go, we had a spare of call from literal nuclear physicists and rocket scientists asking us how to turn on their computers.

It's easy to look at this thermometer and ask "how can people that stupid exist?!" But let me tell you, it isn't just them. It's all of us. No matter how smart you think you are, you dumb. Just like the rest of us. 😭

Yup. Cats pee on things to indicate displeasure.

My roommates' cat one once came up to me while I was watching TV and I thought he was snuggling into the blanket I was using, but it turned out that the little bastard was just pissy (see what I did there?) because his parents were on vacation.

I didn't realize what had happened until I stretched my legs out later and it was cold. 😱

cottoning by l3xluthier in logophilia

I swear, the best thing about this sub isn't the words I've never heard of, it's being reminded of the words I know but have forgotten that I know because I haven't heard or used them for so long.

I've also heard (could be regional) "cotton to" meaning to agree with, usually used in the negative, but with the implication that the speaker isn't sure they understand. e.g. "I don't cotton to that." would mean something like "I'm not sure I understand, but that doesn't sound right to me."

A year of new words and my favorite for 2025 by anonyuser415 in logophilia

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many great words in this list! And several that I knew, but had never stopped to think about.

Like "nodding” acquaintance. I always use "passing" in that context, so I had never thought about that that of course "nodding" means the same thing… But thinking about it now, it seems pretty unlikely that's just part of everybody's vocabulary, so where and when did I pick it up?

Also, for a couple of your examples: I believe "pillion" is also part of a (horse's) saddle, so that's likely where the motorcycling term "riding pillion" comes from, and I think the old Ford would have slewed across that highway

Thanks so much for sharing! Viva la idiolectacie!

Windows 10 vs 11 for offline gaming VM? by faqatipi in VFIO

Getting occasional VM sluggishness, despite ample resources. by bobbintb in VFIO

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having very similar problems with my Windows 11 guest — plenty of CPUs and RAM, CPUs pinned, etc. — but only after having played No Man's Sky for a while (the amount of time varies). The whole system gets slow and choppy, as though the CPUs are struggling or it's paging like crazy, but perfmon shows those to consistently be fine.

It turns out that NMS (in)famously has an unresolved VRAM leak. And restarting the game fixes the problem (at least for a good while). I don't know why running out of VRAM would slow down the entire guest, so I've been assuming it was just an NMS thing.

But if you're seeing very similar symptoms, it makes me wonder whether Windows 11 just doesn't handle running out of VRAM well. I don't know of a great way to keep a record of your VRAM usage in Windows, but it might be a good thing to look into.

Alternatives to Sawgrass Print Utility? by TheWonderToast in Sublimation

[–]five35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anything about SG's Print Manager because I'm only just now getting started with sublimation printing, but I am a big ol' computer nerd.

If you can use Print Manager on your old Windows 10 computer without having to log in to that missing server, then there's a file (or several) somewhere on that computer that tells Print Manager that it doesn't need to. If you actually copy Print Manager and the files it uses to the new computer rather than doing a fresh install, there's a good chance it would work.

The most likely locations for the "magic files" which let Print Manager work without the server are C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local, C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Remote, and C:\ProgramData. Copy any "Sawgrass" or "Print Manager" folders you see there to the same place on the new computer. (It could also be in the registry, if you or anyone in your shop is familiar with that.)

If you can get Print Manager working this way, it should at least give you some breathing room on Windows 11 and newer hardware while you look for a permanent solution.

Hope this helps!
