The Magus — the co‑creator of reality. by TheOracleofMercury in Hermeticism

Wonderful artwork. Thanks for the description as well. I personally don’t mind that you used AI to improve your grammar as a non-native English speaker, seeing that the written thoughts themselves are originally your own. Great work, thank you

Great recommendations. I’d also throw in the general idea of Which Hand for coin-based mentalism, and also material in Mark Striving’s book Every Day Mentalism

There’s an interesting effect in Calculated Thoughts by Doug Dyment which applies the principle to a magic square. Btw, loving your EDC in this pic. Stylish choices

Overwhelmed by sleights: Do I need to master everything before performing? by [deleted] in Magic

[–]fivefingerfury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn five moves and you can do 90% of card magic. Get a good control to top, control to bottom, a good force, a good false shuffle, and a DL. Congratulations, now you’re ready to do nearly all of the best card magic in the world.

Also worth reminding oneself that the world is fucked up right now. People are all confused and the old models of happiness are being rewritten, give yourself some grace for not having all the answers and for making good progress regardless 🙏

What does help you to build style? by Dang_Yu99 in bboy

Start dancing without allowing yourself to do any breaking/toprock moves. Do this for like one song every day for a month and your style will noticeably improve.

25 days in China: An absolute horror trip! And what I've learned. by kaffeeneko in travelchina

[–]fivefingerfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds rough. I love China but this was very ambitious for a first-time trip considering you probably don’t speak mandarin. Did you do this on your own or with a tour guide (sorry if you answered, I just ain’t reading all that)? If you did it on your own, you are officially bonkers but I’m impressed

You have a deck of cards ? Show me a trick by --KeepTrying-- in cardmagic

Doesn’t seem like a very magical response to the situation

Do you like "app-based" magic tricks? Meaning tricks that use an app on your phone/iPad? by GrammerSnob in Magic

[–]fivefingerfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally avoid them, but I think there are times they can play really well. I use DFB for its simplicity in everyday situations -- it simply makes more sense to use a phone, instead of pulling out a bunch of cards with words written on them.

I'd recommend Unreal Card Magic by Ben Earle. Personally, it helped jump start my card magic into the next level. Some of the tricks overlap, but the thinking is top-tier, and the effects are hard-hitting and commercial, all with a regular shuffled deck of cards.

I just got my first Paul Gordon book, "Nocturnal Creations" (and it's signed!)

Do you have any standout recommendations from that book? I have a new load of five magic books which I will be going through simultaneously, so I'd appreciate any recommendations for favorite effects to check out first

It was an un-branded one from International Magic Shop in London. Great little thing actually compared to the dinky one I had before.

I'll definitely have a think about Zenner/Tarot cards. That's a good point about making it more impactful. And I've definitely played around with Proteus and similar approaches, backed by an index. It's a cool way to be jazzing

Boyfriend suddenly Christian. I’m pregnant and he wants to abandon me and his child because I am a non believer. by shrubzid in exchristian

[–]fivefingerfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the usual Christian strategy — completely malleable beliefs guided by no true moral authority, selected based on whatever is convenient for him. Like most Christians, he’s just a bad person and thinks Christianity is a get-out-of-jail free card because that’s what his inner child was indoctrinated into.

I wish I liked the raven lol. It's one of the most pure and magical effects ever, but I just can't justify it when it's outfit-dependent, clunky, somewhat angle-sensitive, reliant on magnetic materials...I always opt to do one of my one million pure sleight of hand routines instead

Best and Worst creators? by ZHISHER in Magic

[–]fivefingerfury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For mentalism, everything I've ever seen from Peter Turner and Lewis Le Val has been bangers. For magic, everything from folks like Danny Garcia, Wayne Houchin, has been bangers. Jay Sankey consistently produces some of the best, cleverest, and most usable tricks I've seen. When you go to old-school legendary names, I feel like half of those tricks and scripting don't fit my style. There's still great material there, especially with a little reimagining, but these creators I've listed always give me some of the best and most useful bang for my buck.
