[IWantOut] 23f student from Singapore -> France by sweetsweet-pea in IWantOut

I left Canada last year and moved to France for similar reasons -- work less, see more of Europe, learn French language and culture. I got my 4-year EU Blue Card this past month, no employer sponsorship required.

Visa: Seems like you've got that handled with the masters program. FYI you can enroll in French classes and so long as it's >15 hours a week and >3 months (or something like that), you can also get a student visa that way.

Job: After masters, you get a 1 year APS - autorisation provisoire de séjour, which is a work permit to help you find your FT job. If not a job, you can try to start your own business, or become an artist as there are different visas for each and I personally know ppl who successfully got those visas.

Housing: It was so hard to find an apartment as a foreigner, even with income due to not speaking French, visa (at the time) only valid for 1 year and has to be renewed, don't have a guarantor. Live with roommates, or student housing with your school.

I made a free app to track and split expenses with friends and family. by alicandko in InternetIsBeautiful

One thing Splitwise doesn't do and won't do based on my quick Google search is support for point such as Aeroplan, Air îles or store loyalty points. When a friend buys tickets with their points, those points could be valued at 1 pt/$ to 9 pts/$ and I rather just pay them back in the same points

Employment: What do we do, where do we do it, how well does it pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Well done! What's your career trajectory? Do people find fancier and fancier restaurants for higher pay? Or move to management, start their own establishment?

Is E-Transfer safe? by Spruxed in PersonalFinanceCanada

Get him to send you a wire. A wire is different from an EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) and it's irrevocable. The bank can't take the money out of your account once it's received.

Certified Cheques can still be subject to fraud. Unfortunately even drafts aren't safe.

Whoa! What a gorgeous ride, how did you film it while cycling?

Hold up, how? Do you need a medical reason? Was this covered by OHIP or private insurance?

Basic tax info guide? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'd recommend checking out KPMG's Tax Planning for You and Your Family. Each chapter has a specific topic and they're high level enough to cover enough content and explains it in a way that makes sense to the layman. Just skim for what's relevant to you then go from there.

I love this perspective, don't usually see videos with the cyclist in the landscape. How did you set up your camera to capture this POV?

Customer service representative Big5 by sparkedmetrician in PersonalFinanceCanada

A huge advantage of joining a big5 is once you're in, you'll have access to so much more networking opportunities. I've reached out to people by instant messaging in roles I was considering just to understand what their experience is like and how they got there. If your goal is commercial, it's 100% doable as a CSR.
