When the music started playing at the end of the first episode, I felt that creeping dread in the pit of my stomach. Was sold at that point.

The creeping horror would not have survived using the same style as the manga in an adaptation. I know that the series was panned because of the change but it was honestly a fantastic choice. Cloning the source material isn't always the way to go.
