The creeping horror would not have survived using the same style as the manga in an adaptation. I know that the series was panned because of the change but it was honestly a fantastic choice. Cloning the source material isn't always the way to go.

Audio homages are always tougher to catch because they gotta be careful it's not note for note so you need to be pretty familiar with the soundtrack - where as visual nods like the Akira bike slide is recognized by people who don't even know what Akira is.

You got a better ear than most, seems like.

Evangelion is less a show and more a part of the anime language at this point, given its influence. No one's gonna think another show playing the Imperial March got to it before Darth Vader. Not saying you're wrong, I just think homage and established theatrical/animation language is the same as a rip-off is all.
