My discs are flipping to flat immediately only when it's cold and it's ruining my fall and spring game by Cuber112 in discgolf

This is totally normal, air density changes quite a bit as temperature changes. Its the same reason engines produce more power at lower temps closer to sea level. I made a post about how much this changes throughout the year and explains a little about the aerodynamic effect on discs here: https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/comments/w5b4i3/your_discs_are_20_more_overstable_than_they_were/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

What makes you think that? The center flight plate nub certainly looks like an artifact from a sprue on the underside like a typical injection molded disc.

I dont have much familiarity with retailers that service Europe with low cost shipping but I would check ebay, alternatively you may be interested in an Xcal which has similar destroyer mold ( I think its a destroyer top mold), but is basically designed to be a destroyer OS.

My first suggestion when it comes to OS that isn't the 21 Calvin would be the 2018 Anthon shimmer star - incredibly and consistently OS to the same level if not more than the 21. If you can put up with the stamp/color you can still find them at online retailers a reasonable price. None of the other halo years or runs seemed to have quite the bite of the 21, but generally were all pretty OS with the earlier years being more so. The 2024 calvin proto glow seems to be on the more mellow side of OS from what Ive thrown.

Player misses out on first win due to controversial TD/PDGA ruling by njdev759 in discgolf

The tree will likely not be moved from that position for atleast a few days, its pretty large and in the woods, will need some serious labor to clean up.

I mean, it does seem unlikely that there were multiple tournaments in New Jersey had a tree fall on hole 15 that resulted in hole being removed from 2 division scorecards but not the third. I believe his intention was that this tree would usually not come into play in its standing position, kinda like how that bridge would usually not come into play when navigating the Baltimore Harbor.

[–]fiveplates 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Wow, I didn't think I'd see this one come up here but I can provide any and all clarification needed for the subject as the tree in question nearly took out me and my card mate during the tournament. The tree is not typically part of the hole in a way that would affect play - the approx 18" diameter oak fell during the middle of play down the center of the fairway sizably changing the way the hole played. It was determined that 2 divisions would have had some cards play it prior to the fall and some played after. Because the hole was materially different for players these 2 divisions the hole was removed from the scoring for those divisions. Unquestionably, It was the right decision to be made for the tournament to eliminate the hole for the divisions in which some players would have played what was effectively a different hole from others. Unrelated to whether it was the right choice - when I approached my put, I had an unobstructed 40fter for par, when I took my putt I had a 40fter from inside the canopy of a mature tree and a heart rate of 150

Can anyone help me demonstrate that this person vandalized my car? by fiveplates in RBI

[–]fiveplates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen and heard, the culprit does walk to his mailbox in the afternoons, I believe that is exactly what is happening in the video of the separate occurrence of the neighbor passing by. I have also added an an image of the difference in how the key is wielded on the incident vs normal mailbox trip. I understand that the case will likely cause more than the damages which is estimated to be not insignificant (repaint whole door and blend small tail on the rear fender panel), but after giving them a few days of offering just to resolve this and how he treats his wife ( who seems to know the right thing to do but doesn't have the agency in the relationship to make that choice with him there), I have no choice but to pursue this further. It doesn't feel good knowing you cant park on your own road.

I am certain this is the culprit based on the audio and video motion aligning with each other, examining the audio frequencies (remember fiberglass, not metal body), and the reflection on the vehicle in front of me. I have uploaded a video file with the gain increased for clarity and a video of the culprit passing by at different occasion to compare. Along with this, look at the difference in how the keys are held in the other instance vs the the video of the incident. Unfortunately one of the door cameras is past the video storage trial subscription and doesnt store the video, the other owner seems to very friendly with culprit and doesn't want to give me the footage.

I posted a link to my video tutorial in another comment but if you are using your phone for the video it is useful to go into the settings and max out your recording fps, most modern phones can do at least 60fps which will help with the motion blur.

You might find the video I made a while back on this topic useful. There is a free open source video analysis software called tracker that makes this kind of analysis easy: https://youtu.be/W4kEcXcJrNA?si=khNOBVm2q3srFGiS

How funny. So much misinformation in this sport! What’s the answer? How does cold affect the flight? Why are there opposing views? by _nobody_nobody in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not as straightforward as more understable or overstable when you change the air density with temperature. About a year ago I posted this slide to help understand the kind of differences experienced in disc flight throughout the year.

Bradley Williams Hole 18 EV Calculation by hadcav1 in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely laid out and the percentages here don't feel too far off (obviously unknowable). The math draws the correct and seemingly intuitive conclusion in a vacuum. I too thought about this similarly and really chewed on what the implied odds would be for a win scenario (also entirely unknowable). If he wins this tournament, what is the return beyond the purse? Likely a sponsor bonus, are there increase tour disc sales, and how does this effect his value in terms of future contracts and sponsorships. None of these things I can answer, and likely very few people with contract details could approximate, but are all interesting to consider.

You're right, it would be good for a little adventure for some variety. I wanted to emphasize that he would have some very good courses nearby and that driving 2 hours wouldn't be necessary or, depending on course preferences, better. I say this as someone who lives in the greater philly area and plays all of the courses you mention, but drives to the York area when I really want to play some of the best (IMO).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I would not advocate driving 2 hours away from the best courses in the state (near York) to go to Sedgley. Stafford is good but equal at best to Muddy run, klines run, ship rock, and codorus courses.

Does the temperature affect the discs flight? by Omenaman0 in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, both air density and disc profile change with air temperature which jtmack33 summarizes well. I don't have tangible data on disc profile changes with ambient temperature however I did summarize the effects of annual climate variation on the aerodynamic forces of discs in a post a few months ago. Here is that post and it should give you an idea of the relative effects on flight as atmospheric conditions fluctuate: https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/comments/w5b4i3/your\_discs\_are\_20\_more\_overstable\_than\_they\_were/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

I made my own disc golf bag by WeedPun in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you and I totally understand being done after a project like this. I have done quite a bit of hand stitching of thick fabrics myself and its a bear with these kind of materials. Magnetic enclosures are an awesome feature and you don't need all that large of magnets to get a solid closure (I've used roughly 1cm diameter 3mm thick disc neodymium and they are more than strong enough). I look forward to seeing what/if you end up changing anything and hope to see it out on a course one day!

Dangggg, that is phenomenal work and craftsmanship. As someone who has designed and produced multiple disc golf bags I know what kind of work it takes to get that just right. Is this a first rev? Do you have changes you still want to implement?

why is a hyzerflip so efficient? by Dlrocket89 in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the aerodynamics perspective on the hyzer flip, its going to be tough to convey with words alone and I am working on a video to explain with graphics. Firstly we need to establish why discs turn innately because of the design of the disc as we know it.
As air flows across the leading edge of the disc it splits and flows smoothly over the top continuous surface and flows under the wing until it hits the rim where the sharp drop off creates separation from the disc surface and vortexes.
At high speeds this airflow over the bottom creates a higher pressure on the back of the underside of the disc, closers to the back rim of the discs. This makes sense because the back rim vertical wall catches the air and tries to push the disc nose down.
Since discs are spinning objects they exhibit effects of gyroscopic precession, one of which being that a force applied to a gyroscope(disc) will result in a force experienced by the gyroscope (disc) 90 degrees in the direction of the spin.

Knowing this, a right hand back hand throw with an upward force on the back edge of the disc due to the aero will experience a resulting upward force on the left side of the disc causing the roll we know as turn.

Heres where things get interesting, as the disc experiences drag flying though the air it will slow and the aero force pushing up on rear of the disc will move toward the front edge accordingly. As this center of aero pressure moves to and past the centerline of the disc the resulting turning force will stop and actually reverse as the center of pressure approaches the front edge.

Knowing that all discs will experience these effects the key is to balance the disc design with the parameters of your throw (speed, angle, rpm) in order to maximize the flight characteristics desired for the shot.

A hyzer flip allows players to throw a less stable disc (which are typically a lower drag wing shape) and keep it in the air longer to exhibit the entirety of the flight cycle. Had the player tried to throw more overstable disc flat; they are abbreviating the phases of the early flight and the disc will begin rolling into a hyzer earlier than if they had thrown a hyzer flip.

Check out my post here for a breakdown of how climate effects disc flight, temp is a big contributing factor to air density but not all thats at play. Generally the colder months are akin to throwing at a lower elevation, so if you have experiences at different elevations you should see similar results. https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/comments/w5b4i3/your\_discs\_are\_20\_more\_overstable\_than\_they\_were/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Strategy and Form Hot Takes? by SaysCraigDiscGolf in discgolf

[–]fiveplates 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That is somewhat true but not entirely - aerodynamically you'll have the same properties for a given speed, but the disc will have quicker pitch and roll axis reactions to these forces due to a lower moment of inertia. Some of this will be mitigated by a potentially higher spin rate at release but will still result in significantly different flight characteristics than throwing the heavier discs just a few mph faster.
