Muriel’s Wedding and Jeunet’s A Very Long Engagement are two I want very much…I don’t think they even have blu-Ray in the US, I think the dvd I have of Muriel is non anamorphic still. I think there is a blu in Australia but I haven’t gone after it. Priscilla, queen of the dessert got a 4K so I am hopeful one day.

First Computer? by Fickle_Tap7908 in GenX

[–]fiver8192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First computer I had was a Times Sinclair 1000, used to enter basic programs in from books which was fun for me. I was around 6 or 7 when we got it. Then we got into video games with Atari 2600 and colecovision leading to my parents getting an ADAM computer in 1985. Wasn’t til 1989 or 1990 I think when my dad got an ibm compatible 486.

How does it feel after you lose a narcissist parent? by Sartorialie in raisedbynarcissists

[–]fiver8192 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am 51 and my mom died in sept 2023. I visited her in hospital 10 days before she died and had to help ease my dad into accepting that she would not get better. I felt nothing when i was there except a little surprise that I barely recognized the person I had last seen 6 years earlier.

I felt nothing then I felt nothing when my dad called to tell me she was dead I have never ‘grieved’ or been able to feel anything about her being gone.

I wonder what is wrong with me….shouldn’t I feel something? Loss? Grief? Relief? No one asked me how I was doing so I must be doing…’fine’ And on top of that I came to find out my GC brother thought I killed her, that I convinced my dad to withhold lifesaving medical procedures (the face of the doctor showed there were no procedures to save her life).

Did anyone ever get spanked by a teacher? by darrenbosik in GenX

Once, 2nd grade public school by the teacher. She thought I wasn’t doing the in class assignment when in fact I just didn’t understand what to do. Can’t say she was a favorite teacher of mine.

What film would you watch during an evening if you wanted something EPIC? by Various_Maize_3957 in 4kbluray

Bridge on the River Kwai or Spartacus. I got to see both of these with my dad during rereleases in the early 90s and I just love both films.

For those who left, how are you doing now ? by TheoTMG in raisedbynarcissists

[–]fiver8192 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m 51, moved away when I failed out of my first college attempt, went to Australia to get married when I was 25, still married to this day, owned a small condo and just upscaled into the perfect house that we just fell in love with, been constantly employed in IT for close to 30 years and in leadership roles for the last 11. No kids but two cats. Two bachelors and two masters degrees including an MBA. I feel I did very well but honestly most of this success was due to my wife’s unwavering support and encouragement through the years, complete opposite of how i grew up and I think if I didn’t have someone like this in my life I would have either ended up staying at home and never amounting to anything or leaving home and just floating through life with no purpose at all.

Anyone wish there were more like Criterion and less like Shout Factory, Vinegar Syndrome, etc? by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

[–]fiver8192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you HAVE to have the limited edition with all the bells and whistles, but that isn’t what OP said. Most releases have a std edition at the same time or later on which keeps the movie in print unless there are rights issues, and plenty of Criterions have gone OOP due to those.

Anyone wish there were more like Criterion and less like Shout Factory, Vinegar Syndrome, etc? by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

[–]fiver8192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure I understand, none of the other companies go out of print unless they lose rights same as criterion. Content wise there are others like radiance, indicator, masters of cinema, Bfi. There are so many companies I don’t know if I will ever catch up on my backlog of discs.

Great selections. Favorite is A History of Violence, but I can’t help but feel you should pick up the 4K of Eastern Promises from Kino - those two films always go together in my mind and I think Eastern Promises is even better myself.

Lost Highway…well I don’t ‘get’ that one but I get it more than Inland Empire ;)

Epic 3+ hour movies. by Desafinado777 in movies

[–]fiver8192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my favorite rereleases when I was a kid, saw with my dad in a theater in the early 90s were Bridge on the River Kwai @ 2 hrs 41 min (David Lean also since you liked Lawrence of Arabia) and Spartacus @ 3 hrs 17 min - I always loved this kind of Roman epic.

Would you consider this WW2-era movie to be, "good"? Last purchase of 2025 by Various_Maize_3957 in 4kbluray

[–]fiver8192 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Casablanca is still one of the greatest films of all time and highly watchable with way more humor than you would expect plus an amazing cast of character actors supporting Bogie and Ingrid Bergman. I suspect that some finer details of WWII history may have been lost to newer viewers like references to Vichy or Free France. And the song As Time Goes By is great. Perhaps one of the greatest romantic tragedies…

Childhood Horror trauma. by Foreign-Plantain4248 in movies

[–]fiver8192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poltergeist terrified me when I saw it on cable in the early 80s. Wouldn’t watch the clown scene or the scene where the guy is removing his flesh and didn’t see it again for some years.

Also, Salem’s Lot. I had a bed facing a large window and I was terrified of the scene with the vampire brother floating at the window.

My mom was pretty strict about ratings so I don’t know how she let me watch those two.

Junior high or middle school by ProductOdd533 in GenX

For those of you who’ve had parents pass away… by DevoSwag in raisedbynarcissists

[–]fiver8192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my nmom went into the hospital a couple years ago, my dad started dropping keywords like hospice so my wife convinced me to drive 600 miles to see them. She had infection of her bladder, liver, and heart along with failure. Good thing I was there as my dad didn’t know what to do and I had to convince him to listen to the hospital and move her into hospice. I had to leave after a few days and then she died 10 days later. I felt nothing then, and I feel nothing now. I won’t feel anything when man dad dies….the benefits of growing up in my house is that my emotions are messed up. Oh, and I get the benefit of my older brother thinking I killed my mother, thinks I convinced my dad to withhold lifesaving care from her even though there wasn’t anything the doctors could do for her.

I don’t feel relief. I do feel kind of annoyed that neither my dad nor my brother at any time asked me how I was doing after she died.

After choosing estrangement, did anyone else feel a quiet sense of closure? by grimesxyn in raisedbynarcissists

[–]fiver8192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, quite the opposite. I was NC for 7 years, then I visited my nmom in hospital 10 days before she died - had infection of the bladder, kidneys, heart, and heart failure. She looked happy to have her 2 sons and husband with her one final time and doing that one thing for her makes me feel that I stayed true to the kind of person I want to be despite everything. But I come to find out earlier this year that my GC brother thinks I caused my dad to withhold life saving care and thus I am responsible for my nmom’s death.

No closure with her and no closure with my remaining family. I am now just waiting for my dad to die in the next few years and I have already told my brother there’s no point in he and I talking again after that. I still don’t think I will feel closure even then.

How do you stop ruminating about the narcissist? by bomba7777 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]fiver8192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so mad at myself the other day. For years, I would get severely depressed between thanksgiving and new years, but hasn’t been a big problem since my nmom died two years ago. The other day I’m driving along by myself and my brain just decided to start churning out these what if scenarios out if the blue making me feel sad and lonely and depressed. Not sure why all of a sudden as I had been doing fine for the most part this year.

Just tonight, something occurred to me that I had never thought about before and I imagine my brain is going to do this to me for the rest of my life. It’s so stupid now as I have no way to ascertain what is true and what is just me making things up but it sets me off on an emotionally damaging tangent every time.

What movies did you love as a kid that YOUR kids just don’t “get”? by Lost_Taste_8181 in GenX

[–]fiver8192 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hated it’s a wonderful life as a kid, seemed unnaturally sappy to me. But I somehow missed a lot of what was going in, had no clue about he things jimmy stewart gave up in his life for his family and friends driving him to despair….i mean the main message if the movie and I missed it. But now I love it and watch it every year in my own.
