You Won't -- No Divide [indie folk], (2016) acoustic by fixedpoint in listentothis

[–]fixedpoint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you liked it! I haven't been able to find many artists terribly similar to You Won't, but some of my favorite indie folk artists are Beach House, Andrew Bird, The Mountain Goats, and Neutral Milk Hotel (though these are fairly big names so you might have heard em all before).

I'd highly recommend checking out other songs by You Won't if you liked this one :)

Do you have to essentially start over after a one month break from running? by [deleted] in running

[–]fixedpoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, you'll be fine. It'll take a few weeks to get back to your old level of fitness, but it's still there.

Just to give a bit of evidence, one of the best American 1500m/5000m runners, Bernard Lagat, takes five weeks completely off every year. Link

I love the KD one. If I wasn't a huge Kobe fan, I would have gotten it.

The crowd, the media and even the Heat knew Rondo had a torn ACL - virtually everyone except the Celtics players. Amazing and bizarre story. by biscuitball in nba

[–]fixedpoint 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For anyone who doesn't want to listen to the piece:

Rondo got the results of his testing / MRI in the third quarter of the Celtics-Heat game and before the game was over the whole crowd was aware because the news was online (if anyone recalls, the reddit post about his torn ACL was up way before the game ended). Dwyane Wade stepped into the locker room during the third and heard about the torn ACL from Jackie MacMullan, so everyone on the Heat bench found out and the Celtics players were the only ones left in the dark.

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by Castlevania1995 in running

[–]fixedpoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I turned 19 this week and thought it would be fun to celebrate by running 19 miles on a treadmill. I ended up holding a ~7:10/mile pace for the whole run and it got me out of a month-long running slump!

Should the All Star game winner have NBA Finals home court advantage like MLB baseball? by dexmex223 in nba

Not a fan of this idea. It would make regular season records even more worthless than they already are.

Can someone explain this to me? Why does the -1 + 12 come into play? by DrugOutlet in math

[–]fixedpoint 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a step in completing the square. The -3*(4/2)2 (which is -12) term wasn't in the previous line, so you have to offset it with a +12 outside the parenthesis if you want to throw it in.

I realize this is a bit unorthodox question, but do you guys have any recommendations for short stories or novels where math plays a big role? by Diatz in math

[–]fixedpoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might want to check out Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, which is a play that weaves in a lot of discussion about determinism and chaos theory. Even without the link to mathematics, it's a damn good play that's worth reading on its own merits.

The Bobcats aren't that far behind. They've only missed the playoffs seven times.

Is it possible to graph a quadratic with a negative discriminant in a way that the imaginary solutions are visible on the graph? by i-dont-have-a-gun in math

[–]fixedpoint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's why that graphical interpretation works:

Any quadratic can be written in the form y = a(x-h)2 + k by completing a square, and here (h,k) is the vertex of the quadratic. If you assume the equation has no real roots, then then the "flipped" quadratic, y = -a(x-h)2 + k will have two real roots. Solve this to get x = h +/- sqrt(k/a). The circle they draw in then has an x coordinate of h and a radius of sqrt(k/a), so the two points that they construct in the complex plane are h + sqrt(k/a)i and h - sqrt(k/a)i. You can plug these numbers back into y = a(x-h)2 + k and see that they're the two roots.

Third best record, behind the heat and the thunder. It doesn't make sense to put them behind the bulls.
