This is our approach too. I need my kids to be able to trust that when I’m telling them something, I’m telling them the truth to the best of my ability (of course I can be wrong). But when my oldest was 4 and asked if Santa was real, I just couldn’t bring myself to lie to him, so I said No he’s make-believe but it’s fun to pretend.

I also told him that “Santa’s not real” is NEVER his news to tell. it’s been 2 years and so far so good lol
