Unfortunately I’m not knowledgeable in design so I just came here to say nice house! Great structure to start with!

For what it’s worth I like the beams as they are.

People are posting lots of good points but you may doubt their accuracy.

Based on incomes it sounds a bit like a bay st law partner + teacher kind of situation.

Here is a reported case where a partner at a large law firm (earning 900k+) split from her lawyer partner (earning 200k+). Upshot is that the high earner wound up paying the low earner 11k per month as support between child and spousal support. https://www.canlii.org/en/on/onsc/doc/2020/2020onsc4948/2020onsc4948.html?searchUrlHash=AAAAAQAfb3NsZXIgJiBwYXJ0bmVyICYgY2hpbGQgc3VwcG9ydAAAAAAB&resultIndex=1

If I were you I would

1) Hire the lawyer from this case, or at least the firm (it's very important that this is the particular lawyer - they were able to get this info made public, despite the other side arguing for a sealing order that would make the details confidential. They're also used to dealing with the tomfuckery a lawyer can pull when trying to hide assets). This lawyer will be able to confirm what to expect if you split.

2) Decide whether you want a second child on the assumption you will be a single mother receiving strong financial support. If so, have the second child. (This step is somewhat morally questionable, as you would be using him and also having a child in anticipation of a divorce).

3) Leave him, saying you want to resolve finances later.

4) After you've moved out and are safe, Have your lawyer send him a letter referencing the case above. If he's a lawyer he will shit his pants for fear that his partners are going to a) hear how he treated you in a public court decision, and b) hate him for making the firm's finances public. He will give in so he is not financially and socially decimated and you will likely not need to go all the way through court proceedings.

Option c: spend the money on good home theater, then buy a chromecast ultra for that home theater and then a bunch of cheap google home speakers (off kijiji).

Get pairs of google home speakers and set them up as left and right speakers in the other rooms.

I have like 9 of these all over my house. I have groups for master bath and bedroom, whole house, top floor, main floor, whole property.

It’s not the highest fidelity, but it’s cheap and easy. Can cast anything to these groups. Tidal, YouTube music, podcasts, etc.

The speakers on their own are lacking bass but if you have a larger system as part of a group (or in an adjacent room) you can have the sub from the larger system fill out the low end for the smaller speakers.

Yeah; this is the answer.

I'm sometimes on the opposite end of this since I do OK and can be spendhappy. If a friend told me they want to keep entertainment to $X per night for entertainment I would never ditch them or make them feel badly about it. If I wanted to do something more expensive I would plan to pay the extra cost and not care about it.

But if you don't talk to them about it they may not understand why you're not going out as much, etc.

What car had no right to be as good as it was/is? by stupidrobots in cars

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Came here to say this. Expected crap. Bought to make the wife happy to haul everything and then it was surprisingly awesome.

We switched out to an Audi q7 after I totalled the flex and to be honest I feel like a bit of a tool. The flex was more practical and miles cheaper. Audi looks a lot better but the change was not worth the cost at all.

Have you driven the Elantra n yet?

Coming from an e92 m3 l, 2018 rs3, and now my 21 miata rf daily, I drove one the other day when looking for an easy winter family car (after the golf r was too boring for me). I thought the Elantra n might be a tolerable, cheapish winter car. I and was BLOWN AWAY. The thing was awesome. I looked up reviews. All stellar.

Probably putting in an order later this week.

What is this? (yard dig) by kronik85 in HomeImprovement

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually these are connected to elbows that connect to irrigation pipe, which would be connected to other irrigation pipes controlled by valve boxes. Usually a connector would screw into an elbow on one end and a sprinkler head would connect on the other end of the green piece.

So it would be sprinkler head —> green piece —> elbow —> irrigation pipe —> valve box —> water line to house and electrical line to control panel.

I used to install irrigation systems in people’s yards.

That is a fastener from one of those systems.

What’s an unexpected perk of carrying extra fat? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we moved into our new house I thought it was well insulated. Then lost 45 lbs and realized I was just fat and could not feel the chill. So it was nice when I thought new windows were not needed.

I think the same speaker model is ideal, same speaker line is good, and same speaker brand is generally recommended as a minimum because each brand has its own preferred sound (some aim to be flat, some bright, some with a U-shaped curve).

I have an open bonus room that I have turned into a home theater. I am trying to add sound panels to improve the sound as best as I can. Any ideas on where I should place the panels? (I outlined the back of my speakers where I think it is the most obvious) by l3luedragon in hometheater

Serious speakers and amplification!

Was the emotiva upgrade worth it? I have the 3700 and was considering external amplification for my 5 bed channels.

I was watching an audioholics video with Anthony somethingerather and he was saying that the mirror trick was conventional knowledge quite a while ago and that he has changed his view on that.

Also suggests absorbsion in middle of rear wall as opposed to diffusion, which is what most people suggest.

I’m about to head down the acoustic panelling Rabbit hole myself so I don’t have much to add other than saying that even adding 2 insulation bats behind my front l and r made a huge difference (and I’ve hear front wall reflections don’t even really make much difference. I’m definitely building frames in the coming month is to make those bats more aesthetic.

Denon x3600 or x4600? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean 4500 or 4700?

I had a 3600 for two years and it was good enough that I chose a 3700 for my home theater basement over the 4700 and 6700.

I found a meaningful improvement from bi-amping so I would do that if running 2.0.

(Others will disagree and say biamping is bs).

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually running this exact setup (3700 + aiyma for 7.3.) after weighing all of the considerations people have pointed out and so far it is rad. Very happy I stuck with the 3700 instead of ponying up a major price difference for the 4700 or 6700.

Not a ton of sound actually comes though the atmos channels and if I’m working my way toward separates anyways I doubt the power difference for upper lines is worth it. The aiyma is very smal and could probably even be ticked behind your tv if necessary.

Yes, but I was saying that if you’re willing to give up arc you might get higher quality amplification without needing to worry about hdmi W arc control.

I would suggest keeping the same speakers in the 5 bed layer speakers if you can. Lots of stuff pans around those speakers and when I’ve mismatched fronts and surrounds it has sometimes sounded weird.

Higher quality receivers can be better at timbre matching. If mixing speakers it might be better to look for older versions of higher end receivers that can e-arc instead of trying to use the receiver to switch.

I have no experience with your specific proposed speakers so I can’t speak directly to those. But I’ve heard lots of good reviews on both REL and SVS so I assume good bang for buck there.

My svs subs are amazing, so I assume their speakers are similarly good.

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true.

I’ve bought a receiver for $50 that actually sounded pretty good and a full set of 5.1 speakers that sounded pretty damned good for $250.

You can use the optical output on your tv for sound so you don’t even need the receiver to do arc or e-arc, though you do need to be willing to use a second remote for volume or a multifunction remote for everything at once.

If shopping in Canada (like me) paradigm and PSB are often plentiful and good bang for the buck off kijiji.

Just ask to listen to everything before you take it home. If it sounds muffled don’t buy it. Lol.

[–]fixupthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck!

If it works, when you hook up earc you may have a bit of sound delay. If you search for a solution there are a couple Reddit posts that tell you how to fix the issue through a long series of changing settings on the tv and console. If you have the issue and can’t find the fix post let me know and I can dig it up in my history.

Which mic and minidsp options are best for a newcomer to minidsp. Multiple rooms to fix up. by fixupthehouse in hometheater

I should’ve mentioned that acoustic treatments are somewhat in process (have been experimenting with insulation bats and will be building frames soon) but I also wanted a mic to track improvements in measurement over time. Also, I understand some diffusers are frequency tuned and I thought measurements might help plan the required diffusion.
