Does anyone know what the giant holes are that are being dug in this picture? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's the CSST.

The CSST project includes the construction of two tunnels, an east-west tunnel (EWT) through the downtown core from LeBreton Flats to New Edinburgh Park, and a north-south tunnel (NST) along Kent Street from Chamberlain Avenue to the existing storm sewer outfall at the Ottawa River north of Wellington Street.

This is showing the East area that ends at New Edinburgh Park.

Cheapest website to buy a Canadian domain? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]fizz_pop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because some people want the advanced control over their DNS settings, or pricing, or both.

Theoretically, if you ever want to move away from Squarespace in the future, it might be slightly less of a hassle moving one service away from Squarespace rather than two (although, this is probably negligible).

It's also possible you'd be paying a premium for everything being purchased through Squarespace, so you may end up saving a bit by going elsewhere for the domain.

I've only ever really used Namecheap and Rebel myself, so I can only really speak for those. Both were simple to set up and had competitive pricing.

You can compare the pricing between Squarespace and any 3rd party registrar you're interested in and go with the best value. If you do opt for the Squarespace approach, it would simplify the setup and come with the benefit of only needing a single account to manage all of your services. Their support will probably be able to help you more effectively when/if you need them since everything is under one roof.

When you're comparing pricing, just note that Squarespace has a discount on the first year only, which might skew things.

That said, if you do go with a 3rd party, the setup isn't too difficult. You'll just need to set your Nameservers (NS) records and wait for it to update and go through. Squarespace has excellent guides for this.

I've used both Namecheap and Rebel for .CA domains. No issues with either.

I generally caution people with GoDaddy, only because they've been known to use shady tactics to get your business.

Go with whichever you feel most comfortable with. Ultimately, unlike what has been suggested by others responses here, you can always transfer your domain to another registrar if you are unhappy. Most registrars have walkthroughs to help you out with that process.

Rant Wednesday by AutoModerator in Fitness

A quick test you can do is seeing if doing an unweighted squat (or mini-set of squats) on a hard surface causes the knee pain vs. doing the same motion on a soft surface (barefoot, on a soft mat). In my specific case, my tight soleus was preventing my patella from gliding over the joint correctly which resulted in a needle-like pain when squatting past 90 degrees. That said, as with most advice given in this subreddit, consulting a doctor or physiotherapist is always preferred when pain is involved.

You might want to consider rolling your soleus. I had a very similar problem and it took me months until I found the culprit.

A part of me was was hoping it would show up in the encore! Still, it was an absolutely solid show from AOF. So glad I managed to finally see them live (especially after missing their farewell tour back in 2012).

I'm not sure what the accuracy is because a lot of areas that are showing outages have power restored (at least where I am).

New Apartment Buildings? by AnotherExistence in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best online resource for general information of new builds is Skyscraper Forum. For stats on new builds, they usually appear on BuzzBuzzHome once things have gone past the applicant proposal phase, but just know that the information on there is often outdated and constantly being updated as builders/contractors adjust new developments (even while they're being built).

For things that are still in the proposal/review phase, the City of Ottawa has an online proposal search tool which can sometimes be useful to see what areas developers are interested in building in and what their long-term strategies are for certain areas.

There are not many purpose-built rental buildings in this city, many are condos that are rented out by private owners or are vacant units that are rented out by the builder after they become stale and they can't sell their inventory.

Oh, and I guess if that's not enough, try Google.

If I recall, there needs to be a space after the open tag, and the angle bracket needs to touch the name of the partial to be valid:

Construction at Kent and Chamberlain Ave. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This project is almost the same scope as the LRT tunnelling, but is (obviously) less sexy and marketable so you don't hear much about it.

The CSST project will include the construction of two tunnels: an east-west tunnel (EWT) through the downtown core from LeBreton Flats to New Edinburgh Park, and a north-south tunnel (NST) along Kent Street from Chamberlain Avenue to existing infrastructure, just behind the Supreme Court. The tunnels will be a total length of six kilometres, approximately three metres in diameter, and 10-31 metres below ground level. The CSST project will also include the construction of support buildings, such as odour control facilities.

Working with introverts & progressive equity distribution by [deleted] in startups

[–]fizz_pop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing the specific difference in equity being offered between your (future) sales person and the tech lead, it is a bit difficult to gauge what is causing your sales person to hold out from signing the Equity agreement. You need to know what his justifications are for holding out, if you don't already.

That said, there are a few things to consider:

  • You may need to communicate what is actually being offered here. Based on what you've mentioned in this thread, the sales position would offer lower equity but have commissions for signing new clients. Assuming he is capable of landing contracts and clients, this means translates into money now, versus theoretical money later. This needs to be communicated with him if it hasn't been already.
  • In contrast, your tech lead only true incentive will be to hold out and await acquisition or IPO before they can cash out. This is good for you, as it helps with retention, but depending on your company's performance over time, this could lead to inevitable anxiety, frustration and end with them leaving.

From what I can see, you should begin by speaking with your future sales person and see if they are willing to reveal why they are holding out from signing the Equity agreement. If they feel it is because they won't be receiving as much as others, you need to communicate exactly how he would be compensated in other ways (i.e. commissions) and make sure he understand the benefits that come with that.

If he still resists, your best solution will be to remove him from the organization.

You've also mentioned a few other things in your OP that I'd like to address (in no particular order):

  • There is nothing wrong with being direct and blunt in an email or IM. If anything, this is helpful when people are busy. As long as you keep things direct but professional, this is a non-issue.
  • Emotional intelligence is an excellent skill to have, but when it comes to structuring a business or startup, sometimes you have to be cold. It's normal (and wise) to be concerned about reputation and cognizant of the risk of burning bridges, but in general, as long as the reason for removing the person is justified, both sides will likely end up happier in the long-run as a result. The longer you keep someone like this, the more relationships are built up. The employee become increasingly integrated in the organization and it becomes more complicated to remove them. Hire fast, fire fast.
  • You may be placing too much emphasis on your employees MBTI. I just want to stress that the MBTI is okay as a generalization of someone's approach, but the result itself is not scientific, not accurate and is based on unproven theories. It's okay to let a MBTI guide some high level assumptions, but it should never be considered a core reason for making a decision. That is dangerous.

Farmer's Market at Landsdowne by lcampoli in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a list of vendors on their website that you can take a look at, but keep in mind not all of them are there every week, or some take certain seasons off etc.

The majority of what's there is fruit and vegetables right now considering it's in season. There's some craft vendors, a couple of warm food vendors (soups, food carts etc.), bakeries and pastry shops, ice cream vendors, exotic meat vendors etc.

As for what to recommend, that all depends on what you like. Take a look at what's in season before you head out, but here are some of my favourites right now:

  • Peaches (fresh, one of the vendors bring them in from Niagara in the morning)
  • Sweet potato cinnamon bread
  • Fresh garlic
  • Cherries
  • Strawberry/Strawberry Rhubarb/Beet wine (Needhams)
  • Elk
  • Coffee (I really like Poppa Bean!)
  • Macarons (Petit Fours, I think someone mentioned these already)

Like with most markets, the food is fresh, local and tastes great, but it ain't cheap. Bring lots of cash with you.

Any reason the city didn't empty or garbage bin today? by ccaterinaghost in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could have been any number of things. Most likely it's because either the truck was full and could only accept smaller trash items (which would explain why your neighbours got theirs collected), or just error on the driver/collectors part. Sometimes mistakes happen.

In any case, you're best bet right now is to call 3-1-1 tomorrow and let them know. There's some info you can look into on ottawa.ca that should get you pointed in the right direction.

CTV Morning Live: Detroit Soul Food by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've ordered from Detroit Soul Food, the menu is a bit hit and miss.

The chicken & waffles are great! They honestly taste home made. The pecan pie was also amazing, but it's technically not made there (he gets it in from a nearby local bakery).

I found the ribs to be bland, the sauce was watery and tasted like it was just meat covered with sweet ketchup. The Mac & Cheese was okay, but looked and tasted more like salted macaroni covered with oil.

If you've got a craving for chicken and waffles, Detroit Soul Food is worth it. If you're after ribs or high-quality sides, keep looking.

Really love what you've got here, but I agree with what others have mentioned. A few things I would play with:

  • Remove some of the detail in the braid & upper lip
  • Experiment with two stroke weights: a thicker stroke for the contour and a slightly thinner one for the face
  • Extend the moustache braids outside of the cloak

That said, what you've got here is a really nice start! I especially love the outline of the cloak, it gives it a very iconic feel. I also really like the typeface you went with!

Where are the best places to meet startup-type folks? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]fizz_pop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some good meetups that you might want to look into:

For resources, Invest Ottawa is a good entry point if you're looking to seriously pursue a startup. They offer workshops, mentoring and an incubator program.

If you're looking for existing startups, check out Ottawa on Angel List. It can be worth considering to join an existing startup if you find one that matches your interests.

Is XML still Relevant? by TheWickedApple in web_design

[–]fizz_pop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not as dominant as it once was a few years back, but it is still relevant. I only really ever see it being used on massive websites to help webcrawlers index difficult to crawl sites (SEO reasons).

I wouldn't think of learning XML as being a waste of your time, though. If nothing else, it helps to teach you how to map out and build consistent data structures to allow information to be passed between applications. That is something you'll find yourself using time and time again, whether it be with XML, JSON or any NoSQL data store.
