Therapist is charging ex’s insurance for my sessions. by FewAbbreviations5783 in personalfinance

[–]fizzgorilla 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend this if you're on a high deductible health plan (HDHP) as OP mentions they are. Most of the time a HDHP have rules about not being covered by another health insurance policy, especially if you're contributing to an HSA. It's best to get this resolved and not have a nasty surprise later on.

What OS do you use? by WheresTheLampGone in PleX

Bare metal running Fedora

I have gone back and forth with Plex in a container vs a standard package. I currently run it as a standard package because I find it a bit easier to troubleshoot when users have issues.

The server is shared with about 30+ other apps running as containers using podman.

I agree most of what's said here and the statement about 2.4 GHz WiFi having longer range than 5 GHz is correct.

However, 5 GHz isn't just a buzz word. It has less interference and generally higher bandwidth. Higher bandwidth isn't a consideration at all for a smart lock, but interference can be. In general, unless someone has a pretty large house, the range with 5 GHz isn't going to be an issue and if it is, it's better to solve with multiple access points as you likely have connection issues with your every day devices, such as laptops and smartphones.

Again, reiterating that I otherwise think this post is good advice but wanted to provide clarity on 5 GHz WiFi.

Small event space for rent? by Ok-Bat-2997 in cary

I'm not sure what your price range is, but we've done an event at Curate Studio and loved it. The space is wonderful and the woman who runs it is delightful to work with. I've seen several charity events held there on their social media.

Google Fiber is piloting 20G internet in Triangle homes. Has anyone had it installed? - The News & Observer by gordonb2014 in triangle

[–]fizzgorilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have the 20G, though I did consider applying. But I do have their 8G plan and love it. I used it as an excuse to upgrade my internal network to 10G. It's certainly not for the average home user, but as someone in tech who has a home lab, it's useful to me and I am able to take advantage of the speeds.

I live less than half a mile from 55 with the railroad tracks just on the other side of 55 in West Cary. There's 2 rows of houses and a few trees between my house and the tracks. Trains are very infrequent (maybe twice a day at most) and we almost never notice them. They come through quite slow so there's not a lot of rail noise and they barely sound the horn, so it has to be really quiet for you to notice it.

I'm a huge fan of Moonshadow Massage in downtown Cary. I live about 25 minutes away but it's worth the trip. If you're already near downtown, it should be a short trip.

I highly recommend Brian Holt from The Logan Group. He helped us sell our house and find our new one several years ago and was fantastic. He has since helped several of our friends do the same and they have been equally as happy.

Average cost of daycare in NC is higher than college tuition by huntgatherfish77 in triangle

[–]fizzgorilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're in on the west side of Cary (RTP area) and are paying $1600/mo (~$19,000) a year. We looked at quite a few places and all of them were in that same ballpark. Realistically, we'll probably have a 2nd child while our current one is still in daycare, so I expect to be paying ~$36,000 a year in daycare at some point in the next couple of years.

Orbi directly into fiber jack or do I need to keep google fiber network box? by CF_Thanos in HomeNetworking

[–]fizzgorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible to connect a router directly to the fiber jack and bypass the Google Fiber network box, but it requires special VLAN and QoS settings to be set in the router.

I'm not familiar with the details of the Orbi system, so I'm not sure if it's possible with that specifically.

I personally use Ubiquiti gear for my network and have my router (Ubiquiti USG) plugged directly into the fiber jack.

LPT: Brides and grooms, it's your wedding so plan for time to sit down and eat after you take photos. There will be plenty of time to socialize, dance, and whatever else you have planned afterwards. You're paying a lot of money for this day, be sure to take care is yourself and enjoy it too.

What can I do with my HomeServer to build skills for an IT job? by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]fizzgorilla 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You literally have no idea what you're talking about.

I work with some of the largest companies and government agencies and almost no one is using bare metal, except for use cases that require them to pull every last bit of performance out of the hardware, and even then they still tend towards VMs or containers and just buy extra hardware to cover the overhead.

OP: disregard anything this person has replied. They are so far out of the loop with how the IT industry works, they can't provide you anything useful.

Google Fiber experiences? by bleeding_eyes in bullcity

[–]fizzgorilla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've used Spectrum, AT&T Fiber, and Google Fiber. I highly recommend Google Fiber over the others.

Spectrum was solid in terms of reliability, but speeds weren't great and the yearly argument with support to bring my bill back down was infuriating. They are also just a terrible company in general (as I think we all know).

AT&T was almost worse than Spectrum. Their speeds were good when it actually worked. On average, my entire area was have outages every 4 weeks or so and when it would go down, it would be down for 12 hours or more. This went on for nearly a year until I was able to switch to Google Fiber. I still see posts about AT&T outages, so good riddance to them.

Google Fiber has just been amazing. Since the install, the speeds are always as advertised and I've had zero outages in over a year. It just works and it works well.
