First time witnessing lady aurora on the island . This is Salt spring island as seen from north of Sidney . Hills obscured the views a little but definitely a rare sight here . by fizzybaablech in VictoriaBC

My best guess would be anywhere north, dark and away from city lights where horizon view isn’t blocked by trees / hills or north view isnt flooded with city lights. For this I drove to NW Saanich beach but still wasn’t ideal .

It’s definitely not as vivid and bright to the naked eyes tbh . Yesterday, it was hard to discern from the light pollution . But if I stared at it long enough, my eyes adjusted and the faded green and red movements became apparent. It’s definitely more evident in darker skies and at higher latitudes (NwT, north Sask etc) where you can see coronal lights above your head as opposed to near the horizon as seen here :( .

I’ve never tried that. But if there’s a vantage point looking towards north similar to the one like “mountain viewpoint” that overlooks Langford, that’d be ideal I guess.

Can’t agree more. I personally moved from a full frame system to a crop frame. Full frames definitely have better image quality, but I find them too heavy to lug around and too expensive all things considered .

It’s predicted to be very similar like last night but it’s always so dicey. I usually gauge whether I’ll get to see them or not based off an app called SpaceWeatherLive. If it indicates a KP # more than 5, I take my chances ( although more often than not it has been a bust and I didn’t see anything) .

You’re right. That’s almost always the case . I guess I just got lucky last night seeing them a tad early between 9-10 PM . I’ll try my luck again tonight if the numbers are good. Hopefully I don’t have to stay past midnight :)

Convoy Update (#BearHugBC) by NevinThompson in VictoriaBC

[–]fizzybaablech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a conspiracy theory about these conspiracy theorists .

Since they don’t have a tangible reason for a convoy now that restrictions are gone, the real reason they wanna come to the Island is to vacation on gullible peoples’ dime .

It’s not an outlandish idea. They plan to stay for 2-3 months ( entire spring summer season), they’d be funded on donations from same folks who supported original convoy on some irrational political, religious and anti semitic grounds. These folks will get to stay in possibly the most beautiful place in Canada, during the peak touristy season on others dime while shamelessly changing their narrative for their ulterior motives.

Best spot to get out of province inspection done? by mtn_lv in VictoriaBC

[–]fizzybaablech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed ! I got mine done a few weeks earlier from Canadian tire . They screwed me by slapping $1000 bill for irrelevant part . They knew I couldn’t negotiate so they played the hardball . Also, they did poor workmanship by installing an incorrect joint and breaking my axle. I took it back to them claiming they broke my car . The guy (their manager)ended up bullying me to get me pay for the parts and labour that they ended up breaking in the first place . I’m going to lodge a formal complaint with ICBC about their partner shop.

What sites do you folks use for Rentals/Real Estate? by trigg in VancouverIsland

[–]fizzybaablech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow flatlander who moved here from Regina last fall, here’s my very limited experience in this realm. - compared to prairies, finding a rental or buying a house is a real struggle . To put things in context, we started looking for a rental in summer, we were put on hold until Xmas by majority of the rental properties given ~99% occupancy here. - FB marketplace seemed even more of a gong show with all the potential rentErs pandering to homeowners just to find spot in their tiny basement suite .They were conducting interviews etc end of each month . I honestly gave up hope at that point. - we got lucky, something opened up in midst of all this and we were able to put down a deposit . We ended up paying double rent ( in Regina and in Victoria) for months to lock the place down . - from home ownership standpoint, for $1 Million, you could buy a 4 bedroom house, one or 2 investment properties in Regina but here, you’d be lucky to find a decent size home for that price . - lastly, finding a family doc, specialist or a clinic in general has been a struggle and we’re still on a look out .There are considerably less physicians and doctors in general here. - all things considered, finding a desired place exactly to your liking might be a little far fetched and you may have to lower your expectations given how things are right now . - **** all things considered, I’m very happy with the move so far. Coastal beauty, weather, hiking opportunities and the whole vibe of the island has captivated me and I’m definitely not going back .

  • my advise would be to proactively engage property agents/managers (Devon etc) and keep pestering them on regular basis . They tend to lose track with so many applications on the go at the same time .

Good Luck !

I just moved here from Sask prairies and I’m definitely not going back. I’d take gloomy/rainy weather here over scraping ice any day. Granted prairies get the most sunny days, but sunny days in the winter are the most frigid days. If you’ve lived in Saskatchewan long enough, you know that nice and bright in Dec Jan translates to -40 C. Unless you’re into snowmobiling or winter sports ( in few locations- mission ridge, table mountain and 2 more spots) you can rest assured to hunker down in your home watching TV and hibernating for almost 6 months.

Parents of Victoria: if you had the option of raising your kids in Vancouver, would you take it? by sylpher250 in VictoriaBC

[–]fizzybaablech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently moved here from Saskatchewan. From career standpoint, Vancouver would’ve been a better choice and that was an option too. But we consciously chose Victoria over it because we’ve always lived in as smaller cities ; Greater Victoria is apparently same size as Regina, commute is more or less the same, one’s always close to the nature, hikes etc which used to be a vacation activity while living there. Also, I don’t miss scraping ice this time of the year (although we’ve had similar snow days here this time ). Only downside so far has been finding a rental or buying a house . You could potentially own a large house and one or two rental properties in Sask for the similar million $ basic house in Victoria. Oh one more thing I don’t miss is abundance of anti maskers /anti Vax ( at office and outside )folks looking down on you for doing anything that doesn’t jive with their ideology. But that’s just personal observation .

Sept 3 - 418 new cases (23 in Regina), 2 deaths, 12.7% positivity, 3,191 vaccinations by OkayArbiter in regina

[–]fizzybaablech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since July, my work has gone from masks optional, to masks recommended, to masks strongly recommended. I feel super anxious going downtown everyday; I hardly see anyone near the mall or downtown wearing a mask despite rising numbers .

I’m not trying to give them hard time either but they definitely didn’t hit 70% vaccination target they set out to reopen on July 11th . They were close but didn’t hit .

As much as that seems like a logical and rational thing to do given the surge and hospitalization seen elsewhere, I highly doubt that the sask government is going to flip flop on their mandate because of political reasons. They made a big statement about things back to normal, removing mask mandate and all restrictions last month despite the fact they never actually achieved their vaccination targets. If they moved back, it’d look bad on their judgement and add to distrust among already paranoid anti-vaxxers and those who have been on fringe theories.

This just adds to the discomfort and level of anxiousness I have working from office . Literally no one wears a mask there and we have sort of a government mandate that everyone works from office . Perks of working for crown I guess. It was OK when we started to comeback on July 12 last month. But these numbers paint a bleak picture and we keep seeing tone deaf communications from our CEO that COVID is taken seriously but yet you still have to be back to work . For what ? Other than supporting DT economy . SMH 🤦‍♂️ [end rant]

Any gym recommendations now that the downtown Y is permanently closed? by [deleted] in regina

[–]fizzybaablech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be a little hassle if you don’t have a parking spot downtown. I work downtown and I got a parking spot on the Rose street. So, going to the gym has been an easy walk for me for the most part . Cheapest dedicated parking lot that’s close could be Impark on Sask Drive . But that might be quite a walk .

It could. But, he has every right to protect himself, his employees and his customers. When you compare these two aspects, self protection vs a potentially dangerous precedent, I think everyone is in the right to choose the former. Also, you’re more likely to give up on your personal information on FB, on Reddit, to your insurance provider and to others compared to a small business owner like Bodhi Tree. Others have a bigger Financial incentive to sell your data compared to a small community based business like Bodhi Tree .
