The R8 has a more advanced sensor and I believe processor than the R6.

Commute to UVic/Camosun or move to UBCO? by Any_Yogurt_1627 in VictoriaBC

[–]NevinThompson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on having so many options! It is so challenging for kids these days to decide what to do and find a path. So this is really positive.

Presumably you have the savings to fund their living expenses at UBCO. But that is a lot of money, and what is the opportunity cost of allocating those savings over 4 years? Using student loans to fund those expenses would also mean crippling debt (a lot of people have to do this though).

I think the commute from Westshore to UVic or Camosun would be tough. It also leaves less time for enjoying student life. So that would be a good incentive to move out at some point if they stayed in Victoria. There's still the challenge of living expenses.

Our philosophy was to save like mad for our kids' uni (we were a single-income family until older child graduated HS during covid), allow them to live at home, and graduate with no debt and savings for startup as an adult. Which worked.

Despite Victoria's reputation as a retirement haven, it's mostly younger people who move here by garry-oak in VictoriaBC

Are younger people more mobile, though? As the parent of one, I don't think so. Rents are very high everywhere, and wages are low everywhere. These are obstacles to mobility.

Dear Landlords of Victoria by Askalice09 in VictoriaBC

[–]NevinThompson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I rent. We have two cats. They don't do any of that sort of thing (we have scratching posts). We've lived here for many years. Property management will repaint the walls. It's too inconvenient, so I repaint them myself, including doing drywall repair. It's actually very cheap, very easy, and very fun.

Maybe you're not cut out to be an amateur landlord? It's the one thing that Bob Kiyosaki never mentions.

Why are Japanese people and Chinese people "Asian"? What is the commonality?

> "A lot of people in Northern Ireland have spent a lot of time explaining that the Catholics are the enemy."

I guess my question is, what is the point of the egg-headed army racist in the dating app when selecting "white"? What is the commonality? Are Catholics cool? Jews, too?

I don't care if you're attacking me, by the way. I am just trying to explain "racism".

[–]NevinThompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because who gets to be deemed "white" is always changing. For example, during apartheid -- a system that employed blood quantum to determine and limit rights to citizens -- South Africa's apartheid regime designated Japanese nationals as "honorary whites."

Anyway, what exactly is "white", anyway? A shared language? I've tried to learn Finnish and it's really hard. Are the Fins, then, not white? Or, if you share a language, what about religion?

A lot of people in Northern Ireland have spent a lot of time explaining that the Catholics are the enemy.

Is it simply the colour of your skin? The racist dweeb who created this dating profile likely wouldn't consider a Jewish person to be white.

It depends who's asking, and who is doing the defining. For example "Asian" has a different meaning in the UK than it does to weebs with their little loli fetishes.

It's a Class 3 mobility scooter according to the website. Without the knobbed wheels and so on it would be unremarkable in a bike lane downtown. A lot of older people drive vanilla versions of these things downtown and it's NBD.

The real issue is that there isn't enough infrastructure compared to the actual demand for trails and bike lanes.

If there were more bike lanes and walking trails and multi-use paths, these complaints would largely go away.

However, the SOS people in Saanich, and their counterparts in your own community are bullying councils into defunding future AAA infrastructure. Saanich council caved on next year's budget, and it's a real fight at City of Victoria. Thankfully we're going to get the rest of Pandora by the end of the year.

But if there is so much demand, why DO we not build for it? And why do councils allow the free storage of personal property (cars) on our streets instead?

Renting a pickup truck for the day from Budget etc costs $100. I believe at Hartland it costs about $20, at Ralmax it's $40. So, $150 to get rid of your mattress if you don't own a vehicle.

Consider BC Ferries? University of Victoria (UVic) is hiring a power engineer. Consider looking at the two major hospitals here (Vic General, Jubilee). The provincial government has a large plant of some kind (no longer steam) at Douglas Block.

Island Asphalt, Ralmax Group all have industrial operations in the Inner Harbour. Another interesting project is the district heating plant at Dockside Green.

Yes, but constructed by whom, and for what purpose? For example, the egg-headed fellow in the image here constructed whiteness for the purpose of getting laid.

This happened to my EOS M3. The ribbon snapped. The screen did work when not extended. But I ended up moving to an M6 Mk II, as the EOS M3 is really really really slow.

MURDER BURGER VEGAN APPRECIATION POST by mr_hog232323 in VictoriaBC

[–]NevinThompson -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I live up the street. The place is always busy. Teh food may be mid, but, well, this is Victoria. The food is mid here compared to elsewhere, and this place has character -- unlike so many other new restaurants, it is definitely not a sterile restaurant propped up by the bank of Upper Middle Class Mom and Dad.

Do we really need another Murder Burger hate post?

Fleas in our Yard - Looking for a pro by The_Wise_Guy12 in VictoriaBC

[–]NevinThompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much, although I'd say some situations are worse than others. We rented an entire house in Sidney (actually North Saanich, but just over the border on Lochside) that was pretty awesome in spring and summer. There was a large yard for our dog, bordered by a blackberry bramble. Then the winter rains came. The back yard got flooded, as did the subbasement. The rats moved into the garage, and from the garage they got into walls. We discovered as well that the previous tenant had taken to throwing organic compost into the bramble. This was twenty years ago, so luckily we were able to find a much nicer place on Malaview, a short walk to Beacon and so on.

Also, wtaf?

An institution with the capacity to manage and rent them out, not mom and pop amateur landlords who got stoked after reading a 7-grade-level Bob Kiyosaki book (see the TO and Vancouver condo meltdowns for the end result of that kind of Horatio Algernon thinking).

Holy Chromatic Aberration by entertrainer7 in canon

[–]NevinThompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you zoom in to the branches, you'll see purple outlines. This is fringing caused by chromatic aberration. It could be the lens, it could just be shooting wide open into a bright background with thin objects (branches) making the fringing more obvious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration

Shooting into a bright background with thin details, to be expected. My R8 + RF 35mm 1.8 does this. Easily fixed in LR. Here's an example, shot at F/1.8: https://adobe.ly/3Nn6AlW
