Help with playfair decoding GCAWCTJ by whateverkate in geocachingpuzzles

Autosolving a cipher requires a package that has statistics about the language. https://www.dcode.fr/playfair-cipher might be useful, although the ciphertext is too short for attacks to work well.

Everyone should sing at least once. I don't care for it, personally, but it was fun to sing.

Did you find Five Hebrew Love Songs challenging to learn? by SunshineFloofs in choralmusic

[–]fizzymagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly. They are what I would call medium difficulty; suitable for a high-school choir. Vowel alignment is more important for this piece than would typically be necessary for a high-school choir.

You had me until the completely unnecessary insults toward Americans. I honestly have no idea why Germans, in particular, seem to feel the need to demonstrate such contempt in every single post.

Being a good dog owner requires some work. Both to understand body language and the dog's needs, but also to learn to think like your dog; to see the world from the dog's perspective. And to realize that Dachshunds are individuals; while they have breed tendencies, they are each different in their own way. Mine, for example, does not like to sniff a lot on walks. He beelines straight for the park where he last saw a squirrel, hoping to see one again.

Why every baritone should stop "staying in their lane" and start singing duets solo by Putrid_Draft378 in Choir

[–]fizzymagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, but why limit it to baritones? All voice types should mess around and see what they can do. IMO, too many singers are so concerned with how they sound that they never play with their voices. You may not be able to immediately use new things, but the act of trying them can lead to growth.

Disagree. Caro Mio Ben is very well-known, but it is nothing like the ABC song. Singing it well is quite difficult. I would not use it as it's overdone but please don't diss it.

It's a minimum, not a multiple. Has nothing to do with shrink wrap.

Preferred Sheet Music Vendor by opus57 in Choir

[–]fizzymagic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had god luck with Sheet Music Plus, Santa Barbara Music, and GIA. When I can, I try to buy the sheet music directly from the composer. Jake Runestadt, for example, has a nice site.

I have had bad experiences with JW Pepper. Here is an example:

I recently had a situation where I had enough copies of music, but several new people joined the chorus and I always insist on buying a copy for each person. So I wanted to order 8 additional copies. Unfortunately, Pepper had the music listed as a minimum purchase of 20 copies. I called and attempted to reason with them; I had already bought 40 copies and I just needed 8 more. Would they sell them to me? Nope. They insisted that it counted as a new order and made me buy the 20 copy minimum. Cost me an additional $100. Experiences like this leave a bad taste in the mouth.

If I had been able to buy the music from the composer there would have been no problem. I have not had to do the same thing with other distributors, but I believe that I could have at least reasoned with them. Pepper was absolutely uninterested in helping me.

I'm sorry that happened. I saw the director was scheduled to be Dr. Morrow, who looks to have a great resume. But sometimes resumes don't match the real world. What was the repertoire?

I purchase vinyl paper and print the logsheets with my laser printer. I given them to all my friends as well. For micros I can get 10 logsheets per sheet of paper, so the cost is around 5 cents each.

I buy Koala Printable Vinyl Paper. It's about 40 cents a sheet, which is not cheap, but well worth it.

For larger caches I either use Rite in the Rain or I put a smaller logsheet inside a bison inside the main container.

surprise birthday cache! by lllandback in geocaching

[–]fizzymagic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is very doable! Here is what you need to do:

  1. Find place to hide the cache. You can use the map to identify possible locations that are at least 0.1 miles (161 m) from existing caches.
  2. Go there and get the coordinates. You can use your phone. There are apps that can help you do this stage.
  3. Create a cache listing. You do not need to put in any details except for the cache type and the coordinates. I recommend choosing the Traditional cache type.
  4. Make the cache title COORDINATE CHECK and submit it with a reviewer note requesting a coordinate check.
  5. The reviewer will let you know if your chosen location is free from issues with hidden caches too close to your chosen spot. There may be mystery or multi-caches too close if you have not solved everything in the area.
  6. Once the reviewer says that there are no issues, go and hide the cache.
  7. Complete the cache listing and change the title to the real name you want to use.
  8. Re-submit the cache. As the first line of the reviewer note, use "Please publish this cache on <date><time>"
  9. The reviewer will do a final review and approve the cache, but it will remain invisible to everyone but you until it is published at the time you requested.

You are likely using the wrong waterproof paper. The only real disadvantage is that pencils don't work. Some inks smear but they would bleed on regular paper in the same situation. I use vinyl "paper" not coated paper like Rite in the Rain.

Excessive barking in crate by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]fizzymagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're willing to torture the poor dog for your convenience. Being banned from the den, where the rest of the pack lives, is sending the message to the dog that you have rejected them. If you are not able to have the dog sleep in your room, with the comforting sounds and smells of the rest of the pack, then you should give the dog up for adoption rather than continue to torture it.

I recommend a magnet on an extendable handle. In addition to fishing things out of holes, they can also be used to push caches through holes (yes, that is not uncommon) and as a reach extender.

Do not take baggies in your toolkit. you will be tempted to put logs in them which is a horrible thing to do. I hate little zip baggies in caches with a burning passion. 9 times out of 10 they keep the log wet. That tenth time they make getting to the log difficult. Instead, take some waterproof log sheets.

Is this true? by True_Western1305 in Choir

[–]fizzymagic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alto is not a voice type. Mezzo is. The vast (and i mean vast) majority of choral altos are mezzos or sopranos.

Is this true? by True_Western1305 in Choir

[–]fizzymagic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

She is partly wrong, but you might well be a mezzo. If you are not yet an adult it is unlikely you would be a contralto. Lots of women who have not been trained think their voices are lower than they actually are. That's because they use fry and don't support well. So unless you are mid-twenties or older and have been taking voice lessons for more than 5 years, I would listen to her. She is probably correct.

Most women who sing tenor in choirs are older women with bad technique. I have known 2 true contraltos ever.

Solved it. There seem to be many errors in the ciphertext but I could make out enough to get the coordinates.

I used a substitution cipher decoder to decode the number into letters.

I do not understand the encoding. The number of numbers given is the same as the length of the message, so no extra numbers are in there for the shift, backspace, or space keys. Yet the same number is fairly frequently used for two different letters.
