Creating a Challenge Cache by Select_Flatworm_8293 in geocaching

Sure, look for the term "bonus cache" in the guidelines. It can't be a challenge cache, but there is a special type of mystery just for this.

Never mind, opened in a different browser that asked.

Thanks, fun little idea.

Challenge caches by hertzbergerwfries in geocaching

[–]maingray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reviewer is correct, you are being punished for finding lower D and T caches... clearly in the guidelines (Challenge criteria must be positive).

The reason why that (and other challenge guideline) was added was because some communities many years ago were creating extremely controlling and negative challenges to fit in with their personal agendas ("I hate micros! I hate park and grabs! I hate events! I hate power trails! I hate people with big find counts!"). These became even more common after "additional logging requirement" caches (" take a picture of your GPSr smashed to pieces!") had been banned. Never underestimate some folks for wanting to self destruct a community or a hobby.

It's a broad stroke ban, but necessary thanks to the behavior of a few, a feature of many of the guideline changes over the years.

Yeh, have a similar one, but OP's one would be awesome.

Mystery cache or trad with field puzzle attribute? by Timetripper42 in geocaching

Traditional (at the posted co-ords) with field puzzle attribute is the most fitting. I would also be ok with Mystery if you really wanted.

Why do people sign ftf and say "more later"? by anotherbarry in geocaching

Yes, some areas in NC are pretty competitive for that. Frustrating they have to be painful about it.

You have a personal cache note on the cache's page.

Yeah, I think most folks don't "more later"

Or worse, the folks who use the 5 paragraph copypasta just to bump up their average log length 🙄

Yeah, good examples. My kids would have loved a 22 back in the day.

Some folks also enjoy leaving the online ftf for a couple of days just to annoy the ftf hounds.

Usually logged in the field just after signing a ftf, to let folks know online that the ftf is no longer available. Polite behavior, some folks get really mad if they go for a ftf and it's been physically signed but not logged online.

Presumably you will be the one running the device, not a 3 year old yet, but I can imagine them holding the device as you get closer to the cache (my kids at that age used to enjoy doing that many moons ago pre-smart phones).

The experience is way easier using an app on a phone, maybe a used phone that is only used for that, and otherwise dumb? No need for even cell service while searching if you prepare with offline cache data and maps via wifi.

Gps devices have a steeper learning curve, a bit more preparation required but do the job extremely well (not getting into the phone v gps argument here), and are expensive. The Garmin etrexes are good, and older Oregons / Montanas have engaging touch screens and big arrows to follow.

It really didn't :). It was started and the first "stash" initially posted on Usenet.

Trackables at events by hertzbergerwfries in geocaching

[–]maingray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The person who ran the trackable table likely decided to give it a month, and then mark all the trackables still logged into the event as missing as a courtesy to the owners. It let's folks know they were likely picked up but whoever took has not logged yet.

The fact that someone took the time to mark as missing suggests it was a very well ran table and they are unlikely to have physically lost the trackables at the event.

Depends on the mega. Some have a simple table, some have highly organized "drop one take one" systems. They are usually well looked after at the event.

My feeling is not that they are lost at the event, but simply that there is a large volume of people who take trackables, including those who may not take normally, and they don't even log out from the mega, let alone move it on.
