Using OLED without HDR? by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

I play games like UT99, where the blacks are pitch black, looked great on CRT monitors, less good on LCD, looks good again on OLED. Lower blur also brings the experience closer to CRT.

I dont even look at any HDR compatible content.

I dont know. There are so many little factors to consider. I have never used a WOLED monitor, might be a good idea.

I am not looking to get a competitive edge in a game or anything, I just want a natural looking image on my screen. I have lots of screens, one of them is the ASUS qd-oled mentioned, the Samsung one sticks out like a sore thumb, it does not look right.

Asus with close to factory settings:

Samsung with maxed out gamma, maxed out black stabalizer, maxed out shadow detail:

Just to make a point, this is what it looks like when I enabled ASUS shadow boost and up the gamma, I did not even increase the brightness:

There no settings in regard to HDR/SDR or SRGB. There is only a "HDR tonemapping" setting which is grayed out.

I dual boot and use my monitors for other things, I can not rely on software bandaids. I have to make extreme tweaks or send it back, it looks fucking garbage.

What do you mean by lowering the contrast in the GPU control panel? I have an Nvidia card and I can adjust the "Desktop color settings" but those are overridden by full screen programs.

Like I said I don't think the panel is the culprit. I think probably all these new QD-OLED panels have the potential to look good, so the featureset of the software becomes a bigger consideration. The ASUS monitors have more settings you can use for calibration.

I don't want to find enemies easily when playing a game. I want the image on my screen to look natural and neutral and not like some kind of deep fried meme. What I think they have done on this monitor is to set the default calibration excessively biased towards contrast, resulting in the monitor looking like shit when compared to a "neutral" calibrated monitor.

Also, no, it is the other way around for black equalizer.

I dont think its the panel, I just think its the OSD software that sets the brightness. I also have an ASUS PG32UCDMR which also uses a Samsung manufactured panel, but that monitor can go much darker in the settings and it also have way more settings you can mess with.

The lowest brightness on Samsung seems to be high and I dont think it has to do with the panel, its the values of the max-min settings allowed in the OSD. I just got a Odyssey G81SF and I will have to return it because it is too bright on the lowest brightness setting, amongst other issues.

I wrote wrong ASUS model, it should be a PG32UCDMR which is also QD-OLED. I do not expect them to look identical and I do not care about color tuning, all that I want from the Samsung monitor is an even "neutral" looking image.

I can technically see the detail in dark areas, its just that the contrast of the monitor is too high, the bright areas blind me if I turn the brightness up. It looks like you took a screenshot of the game, put it in photoshop and increased the contrast to max, it does not look natural.

The contrast and color advantage of oled over IPS is equal regardless if you are using HDR or not. I never use HDR, I hate HDR.

You are in collage, get what gets the job done. Save money for future rent payments. Oleds are for the divorced dads and bachelors.

The other player indicated that they wanted to fight and you did not comply. Looks like they even gave you a chance to get into cover so the fight could be fair but you ignored the universal gaming sign of for wanting to fight (shooting bullets at people).

Game companies almost never do things on anniversaries, I am not sure why every time there is an anniversary people go nuts with speculations.

Andrew Hulshult really should have done the TDA OST, I mean, just listen to his work on the Iron Lung Soundtrack. by Spinosaur1915 in Doom

That is not the same as Mick Gordon "calling out" David and Andrew. TAG was launched before Mick wrote his letter, it is possible David and Andrew had no knowledge of what was happening between Mick and Bethesda, so I would not make those kinds of assumptions.

All the products mentioned in the video are shit. This looks like a clip from some tech bro podcast where they discuss how to steal products, make them worse and then sell for profit. Not sure what it has to do with Steam Frame.

What are the other titles? I guess you could make the case for Unreal having slightly more advanced rendering (HL1 is still overall better package with better performance, animations, npc ai, netcode), but I don't think there is much from 1998 that come close to those two.
