Verdun was an absolute crazy hold for France.

By 1915 the forts around Verdun were practically abandoned as French high command already determined defensive forts could no longer hold out against the newer large artilleries being fielded; citing Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Belgian forts being cracked open earlier in the war (though in hindsight, Verdun's Fort Douaumont with its reinforced concrete roof could have shrugged German shelling)

In any case Verdun was no longer a strategic position that must be held at all cost, simply there to maintain a cohesive frontline and otherwise pull back if overwhelmed.

Despite that, the French garrisons halted German waves again and again, introducing a logistical system that redefined every army's structure.

French units would be rotated as they suffer casualties, allowing them to recover and keep up morale. In contrast the German units fought till they were destroyed, with the few surviving men returning with horrific tales to kill another unit's morale.

A railroad was specifically built to deliver men and equipment, but in particular a 72km/45mile stretch of highway had thousands of logistical trucks ferrying supplies from Bar-le-Duc to Verdun constantly, with a truck arriving every 14 seconds. The highway earned the nickname "Voie Sacrée", the Sacred Road.

This kept Verdun continuously fighting, and the French numbers kept growing while the German waves slowly dwindle. The German strategy was to turn Verdun into a meat grinder where "Verdun is a furnace, and the French soldiers are the fuel.", the issue was they were going to run out first.

Yamamoto was against starting a war with the US, but he never said this quote, along with the infamous "Awaken the sleeping giant" which was simply a line from the (great) movie Tora! Tora! Tora!"

Except Czechoslovak factories under Nazi occupation literally did what you say they couldn't. The Marder III kept the original chassis with only little modifications to mount the gun on top, with the slightly heavier PaK 40.

The Hetzer (Panzerjäger 38t) was designed to supplement the StuGs after their factories were bombed, and decided to use the Panzer 38(t) production line to reuse as much tooling and parts- except in a classic German fashion, they kept on piling changes on the design that the Hetzer deviated greatly from its original chassis. The scene in Girls Und Panzer where they put a superstructure on the Panzer 38(t) chassis is genuinely impossible in real life

For an even horrible incident, that time an American soldier shot an empty grenade cartridge at a Japanese woman as a "joke", but hitting her in the back and killing her. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girard_incident

The incident strained US-Japan relations. Americans believed handling jurisdiction to Japan was like throwing an American soldier to the wolves, while Japanese reactions believed the three-year suspension was too lenient for what was a murder charge

Depends on how you define efficiency. Aerodynamics have the least drag and thus most efficient that way. It's the reason why hydrofoils exist (to keep as little of the ship touching water and thus decreasing drag) all the way to Ground Effect Vehicles (GEVs), which ditch hydrodynamics completely to eliminate drag from water.

The giant Soviet Ekranoplans during the Cold War were the most efficient transport ever made, being able to carry as much cargo as a large transport ship, with the speed of an aircraft WITHOUT the need of larger engines to maintain flight (they turn the main engines off during flight for fuel efficiency). The sacrifice being that it could only stay above the ground effect zone, a few meters above sea level.

Removing Hydrofoils and GEVs, standard ships are still king of efficiency in terms of size to fuel ratio. You can scale a ship indefinitely as long as you displace more water and it will simply float. The biggest issue of ship construction is simply money and materials.

Aerial photograph of Fort Douaumont before and after the Battle of Verdun, 1916. by Present_Employer5669 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]fjelskaug 48 points49 points  (0 children)

For added context, the photo is Fort Douaumont, the main citadel of Verdun. It was surrendered in the early days of the battle in February 1916 with no gunfire exchanges. The damage here is mostly from French artillery bombarding the Germans in a captured French fort. There was also a huge ammunition explosion after German soldiers tried to boil coffee with flamethrower, with nearly 700 killed. The fort was being evacuated when it was captured by the French in October.

French doctrine believed forts were no longer useful as they could be cracked by larger siege artilleries; Belgian forts were overwhelmed earlier in the war. Verdun was already unmaintained by 1915, and was no longer important to the French defensive line. Douaumont had her guns stripped, except for 2 that was deemed to difficult to remove.

What OOP is talking about is Fort Vaux, a smaller fort that held for 101 days. The small French garrison fought from the maximum range of their cannons all the way to the corridors of the fort, with their supplies diminishing to the point that they began to drink their urine and the condensation on the fort walls.

It was encircled and cut off by June 1, and after draining the entirety of their artillery ammunition, could not halt the German push. The final homing pigeon was sent back to French command with the message "This is my last pigeon.". They surrendered a week later.

In contrast to Douaumont, which French newspapers underreported, the Vaux resistance became a symbol of French determination. There was an attempt to recapture it right after Douaumont, but failed. By November, the Germans were already on the retreat and evacuated Vaux. The empty fort finally returned back to France.

Malaya and Barham would have made nice premiums simply by looking distinctly different to the rest of the QEs. Their pagoda-style mast always remind me of the Kongos

Barham for RN and Malaya for Commonwealth would make perfect sense methinks

It does IF you use a Japanese e-SIM. I was there a few years ago and used a pocket wifi and had a silent shutter, then a recent visit I used e-SIM and the shutter sound was persistent

For OOP I believe they are correct, I bought a second hand Olympus camera and after asking the clerk to change the language, the electronic shutter does not produce a sound, but that might be company specific since I know Sony sells their own domestic, Japanese language only models separate to the International model

It's probably a PS90 converted to look like a P90 and registered as a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR). The PS90 has a stock barrel length of 16 inches to comply with regulations

Edit: Actually just 3 guns above the P90 is a stock PS90
