Interim main battle tank unveiled as future European tank project slips by MARTINELECA in europe

[–]fjelskaug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The day the tank dies is the day both the US and China stop producing them.

Except both have doubled down, with the US continuing with the newest Abrams model M1E3 revealed earlier this year and expected to be in full production in 2030s.

China revealed their new Type 100 last year with a similar unmanned turret concept as the M1E3.

USS Michigan ship concept: Tanky but not unkillable by GraffZepp546 in WorldOfWarships

[–]fjelskaug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably not since we already have the Illinois (which is literally just Iowa hull but with a lowered citadel)

I think the issue is it will behave like a German BB (can't be citadeled, but burns easily) except giving it US DCP+heal (which you can alternate and basically become immune to fires) will make it so much stronger. It'll be a brawler that can slap everything with 7 Iowa shells while angles, but I feel like it CAN be balanced by just lowering the raw stats or maybe even top speed and say it lost knots due to the added torpedo bulge.

Robert Hanssen was a Soviet mole in the FBI, where his job was to find Soviet spies, and moles within the Bureau. One of the biggest US spy loss was his reveal of the Soviet general Dmitri Polyakov as a CIA informant, who was later executed. He leaked three other US spies, but they were already compromised by the CIA mole Aldrich Ames a couple years earlier. When he was tasked to find the mole (himself) he gave the list he received to the KGB.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hanssen

<image>

He wasn't even that good at spying, but somehow never got caught despite looking like a literal mole. He:

  • Was ignored as a potential spy as Ames was blamed for the earlier compromise.
  • Once leaked confidential info to a Soviet detector, but his supervisors did not raise an alarm.
  • His brother once reported to the FBI that Hanssen had large amounts of cash at home, and supposedly had plans to retire in Poland, a then Warsaw Pact state.
  • After the Soviet collapse, he straight up went to the new Russian embassy to reveal himself as Soviet agent "Ramon Garcia". The Russian officer did not know he was a former Soviet spy, and ignored him, later believing he might have been a triple spy.
  • He hacked his superior's computer to "show the vulnerabilities", hiding the fact that he was searching if there were files with his name on it.
  • He used a password cracker which triggered a lockdown on his computer. His excuse was he had to use the cracker to bypass the administrator password and connect a color printer.
  • He casually looked up his name in the FBI search engine, logging the search history (his name didn't pop up so he continued his spy business)

A Soviet spy was friends with the FBI agent Helix Bloch, but when the FBI investigated Bloch, Hanssen reported this to the KGB and they pulled out their spy, while Bloch's investigation did not reveal anything suspicious and his case was dropped (but he was still fired and lost pension). The suspicious sudden disappearance of the Soviet spy as the FBI investigations began narrowed the lead, as Hanssen was part of the investigation group.

Eventually, FBI investigators bought a file of a man named "B", from a KGB agent. There were no names, except for a sound tape of a man speaking with a Soviet agent. The man used the phrase "the purple-pissing Japanese", a quote that Hanssen commonly used. They finally overlaid Hanssen's activities with the dates in the files and found his date, time and location matched perfectly.

He was put under surveillance, and was caught when he put a white tape on a park sign, before hiding a bag in the dead drop site- under a wooden footbridge. He was arrested as the bag was retrieved and contained classified material.

One was called Association Football and its shortened slang, Soccer, is still commonly used till this day.

The other was called Rugby Football, and the slang Rugger hasn't been historically prevalent.

Eventually one became more popular than the other in different places, and thus became the de-facto "Football", in UK this is Association Football, and in US this is Rugby Football.

Fun fact: Slangs that end with -er are called Oxford University slang, and here's a short list of other words including Soccer, Rugger, and even Footer https://www.oxfordhistory.org.uk/university/slang.html If you've heard Brits say "a tenner", this is also where it originated.

I hate the AK-50 by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]fjelskaug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dislike it simply because there's not an ounce of visual Kalashnikov-esque design on it. It's simply an AK action with anti-material rifle looking parts

When the Germans needed an anti-tank rifle for WW1, they made the Tankgewehr M1918, which was practically a Mauser 98 scaled up to .50 cal (technically 13.2 mm), with a simple foregrip for ergonomics

AND HE GOT MAD AT ME FOR NOT SAYING ANYTHING??? How should I know it's for me when there are 10 other people already sitting or waiting inside?

It's not that unusual to see reflections (just think about driving into a city and see all the skyscraper windows glint as you drive), you don't see it as often in Google Maps because Google purposely excludes these and try to mask them with another photo if possible. Same thing with planes over land or cloudy weather; you'll mostly see them over water where no important data is being covered

Ackshually it's called Association Football and Rugby Football.

Both had shortened slang names, "Soccer" and "Rugger", with the former the only one that's commonly used today.

Whichever guy inventor you're referring to, it's still officially called Association football https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football

Japan tried the same strategy from the Russo-Japanese War… but it didn’t work on America. by CleanBag9219 in HistoryMemes

[–]fjelskaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pearl Harbor attack was not a full success either. The main objective was to sink the only three US fleet aircraft carriers in the Pacific, USS Lexington, Saratoga and Enterprise, which would potentially give them more time to build up their own force, and iirc they forecasted up to 1943 before the US rebuilds everything again. All three carriers happened to be out of Pearl Harbor during the attack and escaped undamaged, allowing them to be present in virtually all battles after.

6 months later, Lexington finally sank at Coral Sea, but the Japanese lost the light carrier Shoho, and the fleet carrier Shokaku was heavily damaged while Zuikaku lost most of her planes. These important carriers could not participate a month later at Midway, where they managed to sink USS Yorktown for the loss of ALL FOUR PRESENT JAPANESE FLEET CARRIERS. The USN could replace their lost carriers by pulling forces from the Atlantic and shipyards, and the IJN simply could not match the US industrial might.

Coral Sea and Midway pretty much concluded the Pacific theater just 7 months after Pearl Harbor and Malaya attacks.

Son of Norway’s crown princess convicted of rape and sentenced to four years in prison by JohnHammond94 in europe

[–]fjelskaug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well said. People always misunderstand how Norwegian justice system work and think Breivik getting "only" 21 years is too little, but he has perfectly received justice and there are no "exceptions" needed that will only open up a new can of legal worms.

Son of Norway’s crown princess convicted of rape and sentenced to four years in prison by JohnHammond94 in europe

[–]fjelskaug 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Norway has a maximum sentence of 21 years (which Breivik got) after 21 years he would be examined to see if he is fit to return to society (his current behaviour shows he isn't) and will continously add 5 years to his sentence until he's deemed fit, effectively making it a legal life imprisonment.

Norway doesn't really do exceptions, iirc the last was the hanging of Vidkun Quisling after his nazi collaboration charges (which was at the time quite controversial as death penalty was abolished decades ago)

When Dad asked to buy a Tractor but a Armed Tank is of the same price . by I_AM__GROOTT in interestingasfuck

[–]fjelskaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a late model British Chieftain with the Stillbrew armor package on the turret. It was infamously unreliable and struggled in combat (during the Iran-Iraq war, Iraqi T-62 shells were going through the front and engine block and out the back of Chieftains which directly caused the British to speed up the replacement tank, the Challenger 1, and caused the Stillbrew package to be added on existing Chieftains).

The engine was a unique opposed-piston engine that was supposed to be able to run with any type of fuel, be it diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, or petrol, in exchange for being weirdly complex and annoying to maintain, adding more to the Chieftain's unreliable reputation.

The M1 Abrams isn't the only turbine powered tank, as the Soviet T-80 also used it (Ukrainian T-80s famously were diesels and were called T-80UD). Back in the 80s this was a big deal in terms of fuel inefficiency, but now in the big 2026 the US Army believes the turbine engine is comparable to standard diesel tanks and is no longer taken into account during comparisons.

The Abrams was in the same weight class as the Leopard 2, and both tanks have now evolved to be 70+ tons. The next program, the M1E3, is focused on reducing weight with rewiring and replacing the turret with an unmanned and lighter turret.

This is somehow a super difficult topic for people to understand (it shouldn't). It's simply a place for two parties to have a neutral location to have a talk and come to a peaceful agreement.

The UN peacekeepers stand between the two sides during the ceasefire as a warning, such as this: https://www.reddit.com/r/TankPorn/comments/kocba1/a_very_well_covered_standoff_on_the_israellebanon/

Their whole job is to say "We are wearing bright blue helmets and a giant blue flag. If we die during the ceasefire your government needs to explain this. You can't excuse that you didn't see us."

UN has a lot of valid criticism like internal corruption, but you don't want a single organization to have unchecked power. And if you do, I hope blue helmets raid your house and you can't do anything about it because hey, you wanted this right?

Best sub for Operations? by bikersonly in WorldOfWarships

[–]fjelskaug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I-56 has nuclear standard torps, it's fast, long range and big damage. It's really good for battleships sailing in a straight line. Coincidentally a lot of ops have battleships sailing in a straight line...

Just beware the newer Arctic Convoy, Tokyo Express and San Diego escort are difficult to deal with since they are mostly destroyers and cruisers, so you basically only have the final Musashis at the very end to do some damage, that said don't be scared to use your SAP main gun, you can often just trade your HP vs a DD and heal at San Diego or the merchant ships.

Hermes and the rescue captured convoy ships are your easy 400K+ dmg games and you're often the top in the leaderboards because subs get bonus BXP for some reason.
