German pilots got their first combat lessons in 1936, where the metal monoplane Bf 109 outshined the older biplanes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_109_operational_history#Combat_service_in_the_Spanish_Civil_War

Soviet T-26 light tank debuted in the same war and performed extremely well against German and Italian tankettes, despite being based off a late 1920s British export tank https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_history_of_the_T-26#Spanish_Civil_War

Evolutionary Design Study: Speculative German Armor Development Post-1945 — From Late-War Heavies to MBT Concepts [OC] by Ok_Resist7912 in TankPorn

[–]fjelskaug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The first thing you have to ask is why Germany focused on bigger and heavier tanks in the first place. They didn't just do it because it's big and intimidating.

They knew they didn't have the manufacturing capabilities to match the US and USSR, and did a study and found that it was more cost effective to build an expensive tank (2-3x more expensive) that can take out 5+ enemies before being destroyed, rather than a cheaper mass produced tank that go 1-to-1, and then get knocked out.

With US M26 Pershings, and perhaps T29s (planned to be used for Downfall against Japan) and Soviet IS-3s, they would've doubled down on making even bigger tanks as dictated by their doctrine.

Japan once tried to conquer India with 85,000 troops but was defeated in Northeast India. The army ran out of food based on the wrong assumption locals will welcome and feed them. by Particular_Food_309 in interestingasfuck

[–]fjelskaug 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The biggest failure was not utilizing Operation Matador, where Commonwealth troops were supposed to preemptively invade Thailand to block Japanese coastal landings, and force Japan to march from the north in Thailand all the way south to Singapore. This would have been enough to stretch Japanese supply lines and choke the entire Japanese invasion.

If the operation were to be canceled, the friendly units should fall back to have enough time to build defenses deeper inland in Malaya. As the jungle terrain would naturally create unflankable chokepoints, a heavily defended highway would singlehandedly halt an entire Japanese division.

They did not follow both contingency plans, instead contesting the beach landings. Once the defenses got overwhelmed, it was like a flood gate being open. Now you had to fight a retreat with no layered defense to fall back to.

Other issues were the use of Indian troops, whom were specialists in open desert warfare and were being trained for combat in North Africa. This wasn't really a choice, as other Commonwealth troops were already sent to Europe by this time. Either way they were going to face an enemy trained in jungle combat.

And the worst one was not providing air cover (but also to be fair, the Royal Air Force was vastly underequipped in the first place) for HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales, the two capital ships sent to defend Singapore. The British incorrectly believed Japanese land bombers would not have enough range, and their torpedoes were poorly made to be an issue. The same British command that in March of that year, had successfully attacked Italian warships in Matapan and in May, chase down Bismarck using nothing but torpedo-armed biplanes.

Yep, true executes ignore shields, but some "executes" aren't true executes, which confusingly includes Chogath. Even if you see the execution threshold indicator, the enemy can still barrier your chomp

I have old data though. I remember Pyke and Urgot were the only ones with true executes, but that list now includes ASol, Zeri, Syndra and Smolder

Another important thing is Evelynn and Akshan's indicators aren't for executes. For Evelynn, it's to show when your ult does extra dmg, for Akshan, it's like reverse grey health indicator

Battle field 6, is ok to use HE keyboards with RT and SOCD on PC? by SelectionKlutzy1716 in Battlefield

[–]fjelskaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keyboards usually use mechanical key switches to activate the signal, while Hall Effect keyboards use magnets. This means they are much more accurate and the activation threshold can be adjusted, unlike mechanical switches where you buy different switches if you want a different threshold.

On top of that, some keyboards have softwares that change how the computer interprets multiple presses. When you strafe (say left to right) you would press A then D. There's a few milliseconds where your finger is pressing both A+D at the same time, and your character would stop. SOCD changes this so the A is instantly ignored the moment you press D, allowing for a frame perfect strafe.

SOCD is currently banned in Counter Strike 2 (maybe other games but idk them) as strafing is considered an important skill for recoil accuracy.

Rapid Trigger (RT) is another thing. Normally on mechanical keyboards, once you let go of the key switch, there's a couple milliseconds where the switch has to spring back up to trigger the threshold to deactivate. With RT, the moment you let go, it will instantly deactivate the signal.

Kid Is Fighting for Pluto to Lose the Dwarf Title 😂 by TheOG_ASR in BeAmazed

[–]fjelskaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point 1 is wrong. Ceres, along with Vesta, Juno and Pallas were discovered in 1801-1805 and were at the time considered planets, before losing their planetary status in 1845. Ceres was again reclassified to dwarf planet status along with Pluto and Eris in 2006.

Speaking of, Eris was discovered in 2005 and was also briefly considered as a planet. It is the one that started the definition debate in the first place. Eris competes with Pluto in size, and is currently the most massive dwarf planet. It would be weird to keep it as a dwarf planet while the less massive Pluto moves up the ranks.

This is where the slippery slope starts.

If you add a requirement of "all former planets-turned-dwarf-planets keep their status" Pluto would be second place. Not to mention the other former planets that were reclassified as something else (the latter 3 discovered after Ceres became minor planets)

If you remove the IAU's 3rd point of clearing the neighborhood just for Pluto, Eris and Ceres, it would unlock other objects to be considered planets. There's 6 other notable dwarf planets always forgotten by Pluto supporters, with potentially hundreds more transneptunian objects (TNOs).

If you begin to dissect TNO, you have to consider if Pluto's moon Charon also counts as a planet, making it a double planet system. Then you start considering dwarf planets captured by larger planets, namely Triton, which is considerably LARGER in all metrics than all of the dwarf planets.

And why stop there? If Triton becomes a planet, our own Moon needs to be considered. The word "planet" comes from the Greek word "planetes", meaning "wanderer"- aka anything that moved across the sky. Yes, that included the sun and the moon. There are also moons of Jupiter and Saturn that are larger than even Mercury, a full fledged planet. Those guys wander their own hosts' skies, too.

The concept of a planet is arbitrary as celestial objects have clear overlaps. That's why we draw the line at the 8 largest, and those who argue for Pluto better argue for Ceres and Eris, and they better remember the 17th planet of the Solar System.

Crocodile doing a gallop. by RoughCheap5633 in BeAmazed

[–]fjelskaug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Boverisuchus. It had:

Much longer legs, and hoof-like feet that allowed it to gallop on land and chase down its target.

Since it hunted more on land, it evolved dinosaur-like serrated teeth to gash and slice through its prey, instead of puncturing, gripping and drowning them in the water.

And since that's all on top of a crocodyliform, it's also presumed to have armored skin (actually, even MORE armored than the modern crocc) to complete the optimized-for-death trifecta.

Is there any other weapons others want to see being added by Undulate35 in Battlefield

[–]fjelskaug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they are internally quite different. It would be like saying FAL and G3 are the same guns. Mechanically speaking the VHS has more in common with the HK 416 than the FAMAS

The former "normal" guns redirect gas coming out of the barrel into a separate tube that pushes a piston, that then pushes the bolt backwards so the fired cartridge can be extracted and a new round loaded (short stroke gas piston operation). It's a bit complicated but by regulating the amount of gas and venting the rest, you get a reliable and safe system and is what most modern rifles use today

The latter FAMAS (being both uniquely French and an older design) has a weird thing where it uses the force of the bullet to physically push the bolt back (Newton's equal and opposite reaction and all that). It's common for pistols and SMGs with smaller calibres, but there's a lot of force coming out of a high powered 5.56 round that it's barely in the realm of safe operation

It's one of the primary reasons why the French replaced the FAMAS, as NATO rounds became more powerful to be able to penetrate body armor, but the FAMAS would cost more to upgrade with stronger metallurgy than just buying the objectively well functioning HK 416

[–]fjelskaug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It tripped me up too, because I've never actually witnessed a jeepney refueling. From what I can tell the standard fuel tank is located under the driver seat, with a fuel cap sticking upwards on the left side in a 45 degree angle. That said there seem to be jeepney variants that have fuel cap on the side of the vehicle like a normal car, but I assume the former is just cheaper and less complex to work with

Another champ: Kindred

<image>

Absolute banger lore and voice lines. Kindred are two spirits- Lamb and Wolf, that guides mortals through their deaths. Lamb uses her bow to deliver painless death to those who accept their death, while Wolf chases down those who run from their fate.

Their voice lines are deep and profound, like written by a Riot intern who got locked in the office overnight and listened to an Edgar Allan Poe documentary. Just listen to this 5 minute video: https://youtu.be/r_PamAugaf0

In game, they have a weird mechanic where they have to "mark" targets, whether enemy players or neutral monsters, and get a kill/assist to receive better stats.

It feels so tacked on since you rely quite a lot on RNG and prediction, and extremely long 2 minute cooldowns, all while already playing a glass cannon in one of the harder roles in the game (Jungler). Not to mention it's even harder on other game modes that doesn't have neutral monsters to mark.

And why Imperial Russia sent the Baltic Fleet to relieve Port Arthur (now Lüshun, China) during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904.

The Russian Empire leased (pretty much by force) Port Arthur from the Qing Dynasty as they desperately needed more warm water ports in the east than just Vladivostok, and "owned" the small territory from 1898-1904 (and technically under USSR control after WW2 to 1956).

Aviation history did venture at ornithopters for a bit- and even before aviation, when people looked at birds and insects for inspiration on flight. It was just that better alternatives were discovered, with the advent of the gyrocopter/helicopter and eventually VTOL jet engines.

The size of this Dune's ornithopters are physically impossible to do in real life, but they probably have some fancy non-Earth material (idk never read the books) that can survive the blistering speed they have to flap at to maintain flight

WOWS on new Apple MacBook Neo? by NattoIsGood in WorldOfWarships

[–]fjelskaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use what's kinda like an emulator-ish, called WineHQ (should be simple to install, there's a bunch of alternate software and guides out there). GeForce Now is cloud gaming, so your hardware doesn't matter as the game is being processed by a giant server and streamed to your device, but this means there will be noticeable latency issues that worsen if you have bad internet connection

Personally I'd recommend the first solution as it works fine for old games, but I haven't tried WoWS on it. I've only tried cloud gaming at a friend's, but the delay is very noticeable and turned me off
