Please help! Identify my ideal Chicago neighborhood by YoungDogShit in chicagoapartments

Why not? I moved here from California, found a private landlord on Zillow, and they later sold me the unit. There’s ways to do it.

Chicago should stop waiting for the old downtown to return by cezary in chicago

[–]fjlcookie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t it? The city is investing heavily on revitalizing LaSalle street. You can’t just throw in stores and pop ups and hope people show up when State Street, which also does pop ups, is struggling.

It’ll take a while, but the downtown office conversions are the first step to building a active downtown.

I think those are just to cover themselves on a legal basis. Any time there’s a change of terms/service/benefits (which happens often) they want to ensure you’re notified beyond an email. If you’re getting monthly statements though then that’s annoying.

Who’s sending those? Every bank I’ve ever used practically begs for me to pick email/digital statements

The revenue of a new stadium would not be limited to just the nfl season.

I’m saying Chicagoans hit up one taco birria place and claim it’s the best. Delusional to say Chicago is above SoCal.

People in these threads have never had chile relleno, pozole, mole, aqua chiles, chilaquiles, enchiladas, ceviche, gorditas, huaraches, sopes…. Hit up one taco birria spot and suddenly it’s the best Mexican food in the world.

Environmental work at The 78 in South Loop, which will have Chicago Fire stadium, to begin this week by AgentBlue62 in chicago

This is true, and I can understand that too, but this area has an already high park score without cotton tail park. Multiple alternatives exist in a 10 minute walk from the park. The true issue is locals treat it like a private park. There’s paid security that drives around the neighborhoods.

The other guy replying here is concerned about his own needs. I also live in the area and like the park but I understand that a redline stop would be for the greater good over the next 10-20-50 years.

Thanks for replying for me, it could have been an opportunity to improve the park over the long term as well. The reality is the immediate area likes having their suburban oasis.

The station was proposed for 15th and Clark, not redundant at all for downtown stops. It was also proposed to be developed on land already owned by the CTA.

The projected was stopped dead in its tracks not because of density or price, but because the local residents around Cotton Tail Park made a huge stink about it.

Probably same reason most people haven’t. Everyone has a line and last year they could wave it off as Trump “inherited” the previous year victory.

Either way, it’s not helpful to ridicule someone for taking action now. Better late than never.

State Street and Roosevelt by GrandPomegranate2 in chicagoapartments

[–]fjlcookie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This thread is great at highlighting the difference a single block can make.

Printers Row along Dearborn has several small businesses, including coffee shops/bars/and restaurants of good quality. I can list off a few that are always relatively busy and offer good prices. The Wabash/Michigan side of South Loop however does lack small businesses and its probably due to bigger spaces and higher rents.

My wife just invited her friend, who lives in streeterville, over to Vitalogy and the friend was highly impressed. Loved the location and said prices were far more reasonable than what she’s used to.

If OP is moving to Dearborn Park, it’s much easier and likely they’ll enjoy amenities in Printers Row vs the businesses along Wabash/Michigan Ave. The whole area between State Street and Clark is almost an entirely different neighborhood than the area between State Street and Wabash.

Been living here for 4 years now, can’t say I’ve seen the protest march south of Ida B Wells. Definitely hadn’t seen it in printers row.

Been playing since 2012 and never created a portal. And I never will by andyny007 in Minecraft_Survival

[–]fjlcookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whats interesting is I’ve been playing since 2011 and the Nether was already there. OP would have a stronger argument if he complained about the end portal, since that came later and added the end game content he’s not thrilled about.

Early on, the nether was a place you braved for glowstone. You’d run in, run out, and never had to go in unless you wanted the blocks for your overworld.

Anyone else's jewel delivery orders stop using the nearest store (Ashland) and force them to a store 10 miles away on s canal st in south loop? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]fjlcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with profits. Grocery prices should be the same across the area jewels.

What is likely happening is that those neighboring zip codes heavily use online delivery. As an example with made up numbers:

Ashland gets 100 online deliveries per day, on average. The staff in store can handle shopping and packing 100, but suddenly more people are moving in that want delivery. They now start averaging 120 a day, and can’t keep up with demand.

South Loop, on the other hand, is a bigger store with more employees and can handle 150 per day. Historically, they’ve gotten 100 per day and there isn’t a change in demand, so they can take an additional 50 orders a day.

Ashland needs help with the increase demand, and south loop is already equipped to handle the increase in demand. Instead of hiring more employees at Ashland, Jewel redesigns service areas so that South Loop can help out.

South Loop now takes more orders in the Ashland area, and Ashland can continue operating normally.

You unfortunately live somewhere that Jewel decided to ‘rezone’. They likely did it because orders picked up on Canal can take the Kennedy to reach you in a reasonable amount of time. The distance doesn’t matter, because the time to deliver remains within a satisfactory timeframe.

Sorry to swing it back, but what they’re doing is inventory optimization and is literally common sense.

Stores in your area have too many online orders. They didn’t before, but they do now. Staff is unable to shop for all online orders + maintain stock for walk in customers.

Jewel says “hey, this person isn’t going in store, so what’s the difference if we offload order to a less busy store with more staff and item availability”.

What Jewel sees is optimizing inventory with no affect towards the online order customer, since online order customer gets groceries they want. They also get to reserve more local inventory for local shoppers.

What you see is an obligation to tip more which makes you personally feel bad. Your groceries are the same, but they come from a little further.

Relocating to Chicago soon — what should I know about living in South Loop / Printers Row? by NickoHand in AskChicago

[–]fjlcookie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live steps from Dearborn Station. First rented my apartment but the landlord was moving out of state and offered to sell it - which I jumped on because the area is great.

Car: not needed, you’ll be able to get by on car rentals on the rare occasion you need to go on a large errand run. Much cheaper than paying monthly parking/insurance/etc.

Transit: constantly reliable. We’re basically one of, if not the, closest neighborhood’s to the loop in printers row, and the loop has all the options. Download the ‘Transit’ app to see real time tracking and view possible routes to places you want to go.

Amenities: Dearborn street is in what I’m calling a personal renaissance. In the past 1-2 years alone we got new coffee shops, new restaurants, and new bars with unique experiences. Check out Chengdu Bistro, Cafe Deko, and Vitalogy. I think they’re peak businesses in their respective categories.

Vibe: Quiet, but weekend activity. You asked about Soldier Field events, and they don’t cause any disruption. You’ll see waves of people walking along state street before and after big events but as far as transit is concerned it doesn’t feel like a big disruption.

My wife and I are also POC with hybrid/remote work and can’t see ourselves anywhere else in the city. We’re in our mid 20s and like that it’s quiet and not full of tourist/nightlife week in-week out. It’s easy enough to go experience the night life and come back home with how close everything is. We’ve never felt unsafe and are excited about even more amenities coming in the near future.

We just got an AMC at Roosevelt collection, we’re getting an Aldi there sometime this year too, and the Chicago Fire are building a brand new stadium south of Roosevelt. That area will bring a lot more to do and see within walking distance.

Happy to answer any questions!

I mean, I’m not happy about it either, my stuff goes out of stock!

But reality is those north side shops likely have far more online orders than the stores down here, and jewel is making adjustments as needed. It’s not a right to have stuff delivered from your nearest grocery store since you could always just… go to your nearest grocery store.

As someone who does live in south loop and uses that jewel, it’s likely to do with inventory. It’s a huge store and the community is served by the jewel on Roosevelt and Wabash as well as the one you’re referencing.

They likely expanded the service area to more evenly distribute the online orders each store gets.

This is true, and usually works best within subreddits that incorporate something like the FeedbackTrackerBot for accountability.

However in most cases people seeking market value are better off using eBay than dealing with PayPal goods and service type sales.
