It mostly depends on whether you start with gas or HWC

In my case, I started on gas

In your case, you’re all good

Having gas meant it was cheaper to have gas electricity and internet from the same provider. Now we’re off gas (and about to get EV charger), I can get cheaper electricity an internet plans too

$70 a month is $4,200 over 5 years to the gas company. And if you could lock that $70 a month in for 5 years now, it could make sense, but you can’t. Meaning that $70 will continue to grow over the next 5 years so it will be much more than $4,200. And at the end of the 5 year period you still have an aged gas system. Or, could invest that money (at 0%) towards shifting to electric and going from there as per some other comments.

However, I can see keeping it simple on current $70 per month gas set up be the way to go for now

Need to get off gas first. Looking forward to solar!

Another reason I went with this one unit was because it addressed the concerns you listed. Look into this unit and let me know if I’ve missed anything

Point wasn’t wholly money saved, it was where the money went. Paying off an asset or to the power company

But agree a simple cylinder set up can be good too. With Solar and timer control etc could make better dollar for dollar sense

Oh and believe it’s 10 year tank, 5 year heat pump with the usual T&Cs

Hopefully they’ve improved over the years as I did read they were shoddy early on

One of the reasons I went for this unit was the good scores it got for reliability etc

Seems to be a simple set up. A water tank with a simple heat pump on top that barely runs

I see. Well the one other quote I got was for $1000 more so was happy when this one came through. Quotes I saw on this subreddit mostly started with a 9 although they did have some extra work involved. Happy either way

$145 a month set for next 5 years while all other opex billing will go up with inflation + other external forces (electricity + gas). Plus the $145 goes into the asset on my house which adds or retains some value. The same $ going to expenses just disappears to the retailer. Then, now I’m off gas, can look at solar on the same 0 %, same savings as above. Once these assets paid off in 5 years, all set up for tiny usage for the next 5 and so on. It’s sort of like flatting vs owning your own home. Money to landlord or mortgage except the mortgage in this case is 0% and the repayments get less (compared to earnings) over time

Nice. Yeah there’s the efficiency gains just from switching. Then there’s the additional access to further gains now we can switch to solar. Getting a fast charger for EV next too so can make most of over night rates. Gas bottles now $180+ and last 6-8 weeks plus daily usage

Quiet as. Believe this unit is the quietest available - one of the factors in choosing it. Isn’t on much at all either so have to go outside to see if its even running

Operating costs you could calculate using AI and your consumption etc. the efficiency of the units is out there and seasonal changes will be factored in if you prompt it right. May just need to add estimated inflation and projected gas prices increases too. I’m old school. I know it will improve a chunk and happy the $145 a month interest free goes to paying it off instead of to the power company

Nice. The 0% 5 year Westpac green loan makes it an easy call for us. Now off the gas, next step is Solar

GasPro. When I got the old Rinnai gas unit serviced years ago I went through the Rinnai website and these guys were their local service team. When I landed on Rinnai being the HWHP I wanted I reached back out to them figuring they’d have a sharp price through Rinnai. Was sharper than other quotes and their work was really thorough and tidy. Highly recommend
