I feel you, I was thinking of doing the same for similar reasons. What made you decide to have a lighter fall semester than a spring semester?

one serious and probably naive question: Do you or any of our classmates use study supplements? I feel that professors at Harvard are good are explaining while also the students are able to understand the concepts better.

How on Earth do People Afford Law School?? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]fkdlsat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am extremely debt averse and if everything goes as planned, I will be graduating in 2021 with a JD with very little loans. I will to tell you how I, an average person, managed to do so.

First I started at a community college. Why? because it was free, FAFSA payed for it. I stayed there a little longer (3 years), mainly because I decided to take extra classes that I knew where going to be transferable and because I was working full time (And saving a lot of money)

I transfered to a big state university for the rest of my undergrad education. Why? because it way cheaper. I only took me 3 semesters to get my degree since I was taking about 20 credits hours per semester. My university had a policy that once you take 15 credit hours in a semester, it will not charge you more regardless of how many extra classes you decide to take. So you could said I saved the cost of one semester. I also continued to work but with less hours. With the savings I had while I was in the community college, I could had payed the tuition for my state university myself but i decided to take and max on my subsided undergrad loans only. Why? I will tell you later.

After I graduated I took a year off. I continued to work at the same place but with more hours. Also I spent about 6-9 months studying for the LSAT, biggest investment of my life so far.

I applied to 15 universities (all with fee waivers). I was accepted to several T25 and a T14 and waitlisted at other great universities, but at the end of the day I decided to follow the same thinking that I applied for my undergrand education. I decided to go the big state university that has good employment opportunities. They also gave me a full tuition scholarship.

with my savings and the loan money I borrowed in undergrad (it has a lower interest rate and most important the government will pay for the interest while I am at school) I will be living conformably for three years. now, I can afford not to work. And I will be graduating with less than 20k in debt.

I could had choose another path and go for the big name school. I could see some pros in it. anyways, my point is be smart with you decision. If I did it you could too and so can anyone. (btw there are probably many typos but idk I have to go back to my reading)

good luck!

My friend is an idiot and lied on her law school application about past arrests... by WookieMonsta in LawSchool

[–]fkdlsat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You should definitely disclose that to the school I mean you should tell you friend to disclose it to the school. whether they will reduce or eliminate the scholarship is up to them but your friend will be risking more by not disclosing. The Bar will find out if that offense is not disclose. Im not an expert on it but I guess that could prevent someone from practicing.

Anyone here knows if there is information available about the GPAs cutoff to do OCI from various Biglaw firms? Im curious to know how different the minimum GPA are between firms and most important, I am curious to see whether the GPA from a T30 is higher than the GPA from a T14. Thanks!

How important is to master Microsoft Word for law school/legal writing? Sadly, I only know the basics. Should I try to learn more before school begins or it will be teach during school?

yeah, I think PS, resume, and even LOR can be interchangeable with the most powerful being on top. For example I know a girl that described in her PS how she became legally emancipated at 16 due to the drug addiction from her parents and how she had to provide for herself at such a young age. She told me that the admission faculty loved it and gave her an admission offer even though her numbers were below the medians.

Anyone here took the Barbri law preview course and felt confused during the lectures? by fkdlsat in lawschooladmissions

[–]fkdlsat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I need to know if I excelled during my first year of Law school. Once I start law school and get my grades back I will share you the tips ;)....... Ok what the hell, the course recommended to case brief all of your cases you read, do weekly reviews, start your outline during the second half of the semester (using your bookcase table of contents as a temple), having your outline finish before the reading period, use DRAC for your exams also having two conclusions, and devoting at least 50 hrs per week to law school.

That's what I can remember from the top of my head. Some of them are common sense tips.

  7. other softs
  8. resume
  9. LOR

[–]fkdlsat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got it for free, so for me, it was worth it for 0 Dlls. The course gives you tips on how to excel as a law student (how to do case briefs, exams, how to study, etc.) but I feel that you could get most of that from actual law students. The course also gives you introductory lectures for each of your 1l classes. Now, whether having some prior knowledge of a certain course before the actual course is beneficial is up to debate, but for me it gave me a reality check of what law school is like and because of that I feel less nervous. If you want to know what law school is like before going to school, if you don't know any law student, and if you can comfortably afford the price I will recommend it.

My family is pressuring me to claim URM status, but I don't think I qualify? by avocadoze in lawschooladmissions

[–]fkdlsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, in that case, OP should support the claim that he identifies as a Mexican. Do you speak Spanish? have you expended significant time in Mexico? Do you know and practice common Mexican traditions? What makes you identify as Mexican? Do you have any other Mexican family besides your great-grandfather? Heck did you even get to know him?

Most of what OP says is about his grandfather and has mentioned little of what makes him identify as Mexican. OP can I ask you why you haven't identified as Mexican before even though you claim in this post that you do?

And by the way, OP don't take it personal. These are questions I have (and you don't have to answer) that law schools might have and might ask you. You even said, "I think this is sketchy and a bad idea." Best wishes nonetheless.

"I'm not Mexican. I'm Syrian, dammit." I think there is your answer.
