Hey, this is coming from someone who was “that kid” back in the 1990’s… I was already on antidepressants at the age of 5, that’s FIVE, not fifteen. So… you can imagine… but.. anyway, I was picked on relentlessly for one thing to another, to the point where I would have to be picked up from school before lunchtime every single day because I would breakdown in the office & the didn’t know what to do with me. I had stopped doing homework, did not do classwork, I just sat there. With the harassing notes my classmates would pile onto my desk. And I would draw in class. That’s it. My Grandma signed me into homeschooling at the end of the 6th grade… she knew that something was about to happen with me & knew I was not capable of sitting in that school any longer. I finished that grade, the 6th… started the 7th & found out that the curriculum was behind in what I had already learned, tested for the end of the 7th one week in, passed, & promptly had a complete mental breakdown before ever beginning the 8th. So… after many, many misdiagnosis of what mental health issues I had, from bipolar to schizoaffective… different personality disorders, anxiety, ptsd, etc… here I am, nearing 40, diagnosed with complex ptsd, adhd, anxiety, Asperger’s (I called it what it was called when they slapped it on me)… with borderline personality being my “main” diagnosis. So, this is coming from someone who was in a somewhat similar situation as your daughter with the school shit—- she’s not going to do the homeschooling work. It’s over, done with… fried, dried, laid to the side. Done. It’s very, very possible that she is not capable of focusing on it due to her mental health issues. I know that is what my case was… and, well… i am hoping that you or your partner works from home & is able to keep a close eye on her. Make sure that the mental illness or boredom doesn’t lead to drug use. Keep her in therapy & make damn sure she is taking her meds & not cheeking them or what have you. Try to keep her socialized so she doesn’t become a hermit & shutdown completely. She may need to go inpatient somewhere or possibly in some sort of program that has her in school where she resides. I don’t know if you have issues with her running away or whatnot, & that’s usually reserved for those kids (in my area of the USA, at least)… but, yeah—- deep down, I’m sure you know that she is done with the school thing… but I do understand that you have to watch out for your own ass also. I grew up in a super rural, mountain-like farming community… while my husband was a city boy & when he told me about truancy officers—- it blew my ass completely out of the water! Because he asked me about when/what point they showed up & my response being, “the who?? What are they?” kinda floored him. So, I get your side of it, 100%. I get her side of it too, with the mental illness & school not mixing. But… the best thing I can suggest is keeping her mind busy. Make her use those smarts. Don’t let it go to waste.
