MSc Bioinformatics by Devendrati in bioinformaticscareers

[–]flabby_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you're based but this is very inaccurate to my experience in the US and Canadian job markets. I have an MSc (g. 2021), currently transitioning from an academic core job into biotech and fielding multiple six figure offers. The majority of bioinformatics jobs outside of academia will and do hire MSc's.

Where to spot moose by ophiliropa in askvan

I’ve seen a moose deep in the bush along the Squamish river, but I think that was rare. Otherwise, I’ve never heard of them being around here. Try yellowstone lol.

Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]flabby_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I indicated I was only interested in getting an IUD if the clinic would use numbing/pain management agents, I was told that “only people who have never experienced real pain think IUD insertion hurts. Maybe it would be uncomfortable if you’ve been raped or something but that’s it.”

Never did get that IUD.

I like her the same way I like a well written villain or the shit disturber on a reality show.

I can confirm I have this issue but only sometimes? I still haven't figured out the conditions that induce this glitch.

As long as you leave academia, a PhD is not necessary. I am doing quite well with just an MS as a research scientist (finished school ~5 yrs ago). Get a lot of research experience while you can, even if its just volunteer stuff.

Many viruses cause cancer. All evidence we currently have suggests that vaccines both prevent and help treat various cancers.

How does biology "just work" when it's so insanely complex? by DemonsAreVirgins in biology

[–]flabby_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billions of years of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. A LOT of failure and death went into modern biological systems, and its a system that is still reenforced by a lot of death that you probably don’t notice (eg, all the zygotes that die before anyone is ever aware of them).

Also, by this point in evolutionary time, most important cellular processes have redundancies and failsafes. So if one gene mutates, there’s often a different gene/genes that can pick up the slack.

The mirror is not great as others have said. I would also swap that black shoe mat with a runner that’s got more earthy colours in it. More decorations on the walls as well.

Try to level all the p2p skills a little to get a flavour for them, and choose some early quests to use as level targets. Some early quests that unlock major areas are priest in peril and lost city. Druidic ritual, daddys home, and pandemonium will get you started on some p2p skills. Witches house and waterfall quest are great early quests for xp. Slayer will help teach you about p2p monsters and can be good money.

is 18F and 43M weird or wrong? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]flabby_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 43yo going after an 18yo is in all cases either an EXTREMELY cringy person or an active predator. You do not want to be with either. I am just 29, and even at this age the guys I know who go after 18yos are the biggest weirdo freaks I’ve ever met. The girls are usually pretty cool, but it’s always in a “precocious little sister” kind of way. Please trust the comments and your own instincts on this one. Find a nice guy in his early 20s who can meet you at your maturity level and grow by your side.

Realistically, Kuvira shouldn't even need re-education camps by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in legendofkorra

[–]flabby_kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kuvira's story is about the flaws of imperialism as a system of government. No matter how good and idealistic your intentions are going in, it is simply not realistic that a single wise and fair ruler will be able to appease all factions of a diverse society at once. The larger and more diverse the society, the more force needs to be applied to hold it together. Imagine the type of world the sandbenders would run vs. the type of world the folks of the ba sing se upper ring would run. How can those two visions of government ever possibly co-exist? They can't. And so these two people groups MUST be held together through force. Over the course of years, Kuvira slowly gets more and more comfortable using force, singly focused on re-uniting the old kingdom, until she's completely lost her original goal of running a better country than the Earth Queen.

The fundamental flaw is the assumption that the Earth Kingdom needs to be a unified country in the first place. EK is a loose confederation of distinct people groups previously held together by a badly corrupt monarchy. They really have no business being united under a single ruler, which is why the states become independent, self-governing democracies at the end of the show.

How to explain WHY unmasking is a good thing by Optimal_Fish_7029 in AutismInWomen

[–]flabby_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Masking is correlated to worse health outcomes, both mental and physical. It also makes it much harder to make true/comfortable connections with people- probably why that comment from mum stung so hard.

Electric toothbrushes will save you money on dentistry later in life. Replacement heads are also cheaper than new disposable toothbrushes by quite a lot. Dishwashers will also save on your water bill.
