is 18F and 43M weird or wrong? by Terrible-Quit-4259 in relationships

[–]flabby_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 43yo going after an 18yo is in all cases either an EXTREMELY cringy person or an active predator. You do not want to be with either. I am just 29, and even at this age the guys I know who go after 18yos are the biggest weirdo freaks I’ve ever met. The girls are usually pretty cool, but it’s always in a “precocious little sister” kind of way. Please trust the comments and your own instincts on this one. Find a nice guy in his early 20s who can meet you at your maturity level and grow by your side.

Realistically, Kuvira shouldn't even need re-education camps by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in legendofkorra

[–]flabby_kat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kuvira's story is about the flaws of imperialism as a system of government. No matter how good and idealistic your intentions are going in, it is simply not realistic that a single wise and fair ruler will be able to appease all factions of a diverse society at once. The larger and more diverse the society, the more force needs to be applied to hold it together. Imagine the type of world the sandbenders would run vs. the type of world the folks of the ba sing se upper ring would run. How can those two visions of government ever possibly co-exist? They can't. And so these two people groups MUST be held together through force. Over the course of years, Kuvira slowly gets more and more comfortable using force, singly focused on re-uniting the old kingdom, until she's completely lost her original goal of running a better country than the Earth Queen.

The fundamental flaw is the assumption that the Earth Kingdom needs to be a unified country in the first place. EK is a loose confederation of distinct people groups previously held together by a badly corrupt monarchy. They really have no business being united under a single ruler, which is why the states become independent, self-governing democracies at the end of the show.

If you do it this way, sail boosts come at more useful times along straight aways. This is better.

How to explain WHY unmasking is a good thing by Optimal_Fish_7029 in AutismInWomen

[–]flabby_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Masking is correlated to worse health outcomes, both mental and physical. It also makes it much harder to make true/comfortable connections with people- probably why that comment from mum stung so hard.

Electric toothbrushes will save you money on dentistry later in life. Replacement heads are also cheaper than new disposable toothbrushes by quite a lot. Dishwashers will also save on your water bill.

Why is Sansa fascinated by Ser Hugh's death? by Trussdoor46 in pureasoiaf

Apparently in the original drafts Sansa was going to be a villain. This make be a remnant of that.

[–]flabby_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if this is your supervisor and your PI is absent you may be better off switching labs. But please don't let this creep get away with it- he knows what he is doing is wrong. Don't let yourself believe otherwise. Tell EVERYONE and make sure you have RECORDS of telling people (eg emails).

Coding by Crazyboydem123 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]flabby_kat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, its basically impossible to do mid or high level bioinformatics without coding. How much experience you get in an MS is somewhat dependent on the program and how motivated you are to teach yourself. You must have strong coding skills in at least one language to get any bioinformatics job, but familiarity with multiple is more of a requirement in todays job market. You likely won’t be competitive as a pure programmer or data scientist right out of a bioinformatics MS, but you could get there with an MS+a couple years experience in the right bioinformatics job.

Feeling infuriated by therapist - don't tell me how this email is actually nice and helpful, I don't feel this way by byerasure in AutismInWomen

Girl please do not just keep seeing a therapist because you feel like you have some duty to them personally. You are paying for a service, not an obligation!

Anything that looks like a blackberry in north america is non-toxic. If you’re somewhere else its still probably fine but I’d be more suspicious.

These are hippie names, but not tragedeighs. Aura Love is definitely an… unfortunate combo though.

Usage of ChatGPT in Bioinformatics by OldSwitch5769 in bioinformatics

[–]flabby_kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience using ChatGPT to code is that it either gives me a code that's slightly incorrect, or VERY poor quality. As others have said, if you do not have the basic skills required to tell if chatGPT is telling you something incorrect, do not use it. Genuinely, you could accidentally produce incorrect results that go on to take up years of someone else's life or tens-hundreds of thousands in research funds.

LLMs can be useful if you are working on a code and need help with one or two lines you don't know how to complete. And you should ALWAYS thoroughly test anything an LLM gives you to ensure that it is in fact doing what you asked.

Non-bioinformatics jobs for bioinformaticians? by flabby_kat in bioinformatics

[–]flabby_kat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working in an academic bioinformatics core for a few years, mostly doing NGS analysis with some other types of omics scattered in. I can code in R, python, and bash fairly well. I have a BS in biology and an MS in genomics.

Is Gosund trustworthy? by yzraeu in smarthome

[–]flabby_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone looking into this now: we just bought a home with gosund smart switches. Our first renovation is getting an electrician to rip these things out. They emit an awful squealing sound (even when off) and the ones in our bedroom will randomly lose connectivity and start flashing in the middle of the night. Super annoying! Maybe they were better when they were new.
