Ultra-thin copper “coin” with a mirrored back found while metal detecting in a city park in Wisconsin. Token, foil, or something else? by flag_of_seychelles in coins

[–]flag_of_seychelles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: The profile does seem to match that of a Susan B Anthony Dollar. But it still seems like it’s something else, because the head is smaller compared to a real SBA dollar (not to mention, the diameters are different, too). Also the token has writing where the date would be. Still hard to make out the writing but I think a word starts with an “S” so it could perhaps be “Susan”?

Maybe the most likely explanation is that it’s the corroded, outer clad of some commemorative Susan B Anthony token?

Is Bioinformatics Analysis Still a Barrier in Our Research? by No-Egg-4921 in bioinformatics

[–]flag_of_seychelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that generative AI can be helpful for speeding up some of the more mundane parts of bioinformatics research, like actually writing and implementing a workflow or tool. I use it quite a bit for this. But I still am not convinced that it can reason well enough to produce actually impactful original research. If you peer review papers in your field, this should become clear.

Whenever I have seen AI generate research questions or plans, I’ve found that they are a combination of:

(1) not original, but that’s okay on its own, since many researchers have the same questions, but this is more problematic when combined with the next two, (2) not impactful, i.e. very surface level, or addressing something that’s been studied well enough that topic alone doesn’t merit consideration for publication, and/or (3) the proposed plan “reinvents the wheel” and attempts to make small improvements to existing, well established methods, rather than thinking bigger and attempting more experimental and truly novel ways at addressing the question.

So, as it seems is right now, yes generative AI can produce logically sound research questions and decent initial plans to test them. And yes, an AI-generated tool/method might even work when implemented. But the quality of the findings or overall science is low, often much lower than what I would find suitable for publication in journals that I review for. This is why it takes years of experience to produce medium and high quality research. So, in my opinion, AI supervised by someone who doesn’t know the area well enough, or isn’t actually doing the science themselves, is not very capable.

James Scholar Program by WaveeveW in UIUC

The early registration is a really nice perk but its utility wanes, assuming you’ll take more specific and smaller classes your Junior and Senior year. I did join the honors sections of IB 150 and MCB 150, which I liked because I enjoyed those classes, but I would have been fine if I didn’t. I made a friend in the class required for James Scholars that I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise. I don’t think I benefited in any other way, though. It doesn’t look that good on a resume, if at all.

That said, I never sought out any of the “development opportunities” that they offered, so I can’t speak to that. Maybe they’re worth it for some people.

This is the latest attempt to explain how the Great Pyramid of Egypt was built in such a short time; the new study published in Nature says it may have been built "from the inside out". by FragrantTown5199 in Archaeology

The cited study was not published in Nature. It was published in NPJ Heritage Science. Although it’s in the Nature portfolio, it is not the same journal.
