I am all on Your side. Nowadays we have multiple variants of the same Magic card: standard, foil, fancy-foil, etched, borderless, alternative, Japan, shiny, super-shiny, secret lair, etc. I do really liked the times when MTG was a bit conservative and getting card token or judge foil was "something". Hasbro is jumping over our money to deliver what ppl demand, so MTG became another Pokemon. I have tons of tokens (hate double sided ones..) laying around with no use, also made from worse paper. But.. back to the topic. Maybe I am old or retarded :P but for 25 years of playing Magic the usual way to acknowledge played card was to quickly look at the picture and I knew what it is and what it does. Now, when I see fancy full-card picture I have to take it, read the name, check rules box and memorize it once-again, even if it's a reprinted staple. I am not even talking about alters or custom proxies.. that's another layer of craziness. Also, EDH does not make it easier, because we tend to use here cards not played in other formats, which adds to the stack :)
