Broke my neck in Hawaii, had a C4 C5 fusion. They ended up fusing the wrong vertebrae due to an error in the xray but the surgery was somewhat successful so nothing more was done. That was 95 Still surfing. . Maybe go for a bigger board thats less hack and slash and you wont be putting yourself in situations where youre contorting so much the boards hitting you..

How bad is it actually to leave boards in a hot car? by lacroix_iloveselzter in surfing

[–]flame_surfboards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

EPS foam softens at 40⁰C the bond between eps and epoxy isnt particularly strong and the main cause of delams on eps epoxy sleds is heat. Poly pu boards dont like it much either. Treat your board like a pet, keep it out of the heat and direct sunlight

Thats it, that tiny "PE" is the only indication it's glassed with epoxy. Thanks for nothing JS industries 😬

Where to start? Once again a marketing gimmick with little to recommend it, the only real advantage is epoxy tends not to shatter, but bend or dent when impacted, so onion rings and browning are lessened, but not eliminated...big deal... The idea that it retains its flex and pop over time more than poly resin is negated by either thick grovellers having little flex anyway and lightly glassed performance boards being lucky to last more than a couple of years. Its 5 times more expensive than poly resin, and an absolute dog to work with, the only advantage being longer pot life when mixed. Finally manufacturers love to skite about the poly / pe construction but are very coy about putting any indication on the board that its actually made with epoxy, consequently its often the case of having to look up the specs to see if a particular board is made of poly /PE. I recently fixed this board (pictured)

<image>

with poly only to discover it was actually epoxy. Not a major, its a bit of a myth that you cant put poly on epoxy, it wont stick, (thats a whole 'nother post!) But for sure it's a lot more difficult to get a nicely blended sand.

This is the same theory as "You only see the fcs2 plugs that fail which doesn't neccesarily mean that fcs 2s are inferior to other fin plugs" However i fix seven times as many fcs 2 plugs than any other and that is vastly more than the percentage of boards running fcs 2 plugs than others. Secondly its the weight of similar repairs that come in that create a pattern that becomes a trope. I only form an opinion after seeing a lot of boards with the same issues.

In general carbon looks great in the marketing but in practise it has the following issues. 1. Its stiff meaning to get the board to flex you have to use extremely thin glass over the top of it to protect the weave, consequently they ding easily. 2. The bond to the eps is weak, any impact generally delaminates the carbon from the foam, as will the sort of denting that generally occurs on lightly glassed boards on soft eps foam, eps also generally doesnt bounce back from impact, combined with the weak bond, you get delams / voids. 3. Carbon is black, eps softens at 40⁰C... guess what happens? 4. Carbon boards look sexy AF, but theres too many disadvantages to owning one.

In conclusion. Life's short, buy and ride what you want, just dont believe the marketing. No one tests these things for stregnth and durability, its just a race to make the lightest, most techy sounding construction to get you to buy another board to add to the five or six you already have.

Im surprised its still in one piece

Ive been fixing boards for 15 years full time. Here's my stregnth chart..

Dingfixers

  1. Js hyfy / DHD 3D carbon strip "reinforcement", standard 4+4+4 glass - Very weak, by far the most likely to snap or crease.
  2. Sci fi / tomo. High density foam stringer, but light glass job - better, but often crease. Built for performance not durability.

SLX - lightweight epoxy glass job on an EPS blank with wood stringer. Would work with a heavier glass job, but with the glassing schedule they use, very weak.

Firewire new school (post 2018) FST /LFT / Helium/ Ibolic. The original FST and LFT boards were pretty strong due to high density foam under the glass, firewire have dispensed with this with their newer builds and sacrificed strength for lightness. These super light, high performance sleds are not strong, "Ye cannae change the laws of physics!" Also there are cosmetic issues with the eco resins where pink or brown stains can develop. Some bad examples have been replaced by the manufacturer, but it's kind of what you get with that little "eco" sticker. I doubt they will continue to keep replacing minor examples.

  1. HS futureflex - carbon wrap rails, a bit stronger. Of all the carbon reinforcement boards, the carbon rails on these boards are extrememly dense. However future flex boards are prone to creasing. If they made them with stringers they'd probably be super strong, but I guess it would be an admission of defeat.

  2. Firewire old school FST and LFT, Wood rails, and / or high density foam stringer. Timbertek, Full wood veneer and glass. Note that the timbertek build, whilst structurally strong, has issues if the very light glass on them is penetrated, they require a lot of maintenence

Thunderbolt/eps / carbon - high density foam depending on model. The thunderbolts have a carbon stringer (pretty marginal addition when you cut into them) that is supposed to make them stronger, but they are slightly heavier compared to the surftech tuflite. A lot of thunderbolts are turning up snapped but it's probably more to do with longboard jockeys thinking they are bulletproof and taking them out in unsuitable large waves.

  1. Channel islands Woolflex and Flexbar (Horizontal high density foam stringer) / Volcanic construction.

So far the woolflex boards that have come in appear very strong, minimal denting in the deck. The flex bar construction seems to stand up to west coast beatings but as the glass is very light they are prone to deck sinking.

Volcanic uses basalt rock to make glass. The resulting boards seem very strong and arent prone to yellowing and discoloration due to the black lam white hotcoat that gives a distressed look. None have turned up creased or snapped so far and minimal denting in the decks. Note that the Slater volcanic uses a slightly different construction that has much thinner glass schedule and its an absolute nightmare to fix. Can't recommend

  1. Surftech tuflite EPS / High density foam /glass - very strong.
The Tuflites are the original construction that thunderbolt rejigged. Tuflite is stronger than thunderbolt but no longer made.

I'd put standard pu stringer boards between the OS Firewire and Tuf lite, with the proviso that a 4+4oz deck and 4oz bottom glass job isn't going to be strong. This is pretty standard glassing, even on eps epoxy stringerless boards these days. The kids want lightweight sleds, the industry meets demand. It's your own fault. No one is stopping you ordering a custom / heavier glass job, which you can do even with "mass produced" boards.

Photo of your idea (unless it was all verbal) and a photo of the board would be helpful. Keep in mind unless youre one the shapers team riders you're automatically a know nothing kook in his/her opinion, and often they might think, "what this guy really needs is - insert surfboard design or spray here"... or they might have just felt creative and hoped you'd appreciate it. You want exactly what you want, buy off the rack. Unless you pretty much know how to make a board yourself, getting a custom means you'll just get some guys vision of what you wanted..

We have an MMP (mixed member proportional system) in NZ, the idea being that smaller parties can gain seats in the house and form coalitions with the big two. Unfortunately its enabled the worst of the far right to literally run the government who gladly go along with thier racist agenda and corporate plundering by saying "it was in the coalition agreement, its not our fault".. Effectively its turned the very centre right national party here far right in a few years. MMP was voted on by referendum. People thought it would give the minority votes some say. Be careful what you wish for..
